Needing cooler crew help...

Does anybody have any cabela's coupons or promotional codes? I'm trying to get a new jacket from them and don't want to pay the $30 shipping or wait two weeks and drive to Owatonna.

Can someone with IE version 7 go to the cooler crew web site and see if hovering your mouse over the menu bar under the logo pops up a series of dropdown menus?) As an example, when your mouse is over "The Boards", you should have links for our discussion boards, the welcome home thread, the official pp boards, and the archive. i'd do it but the only machines i have are either ie6 or ie8. i know it works on 8, and doesn't work on 6 (which i'm not concerned about since 6 is the scourge of satan and should be burned at the stake as soon as possible), but if it doesn't work on 7 then i can't clean up the rest of the menus.

That's funny. We have IE6 here at work and they won't let individual users update to a different version. I'll check what I have when I get home tonight.

yeah i know its crazy. ours are all set up with 6 too. they haven't released a real security update for it since 2004 (but they did update it last summer when xp service pack 3 came out). the biggest reason it guys won't allow upgrades is because too damn many enterprise applications haven't come out of the dark ages. going back from october to now, 51.5% of the hits on the coolercrew site came from ie6, compared with 15% in the first half of this month and its been a steady decline.

Sure you want to have it not work on IE6 if 50% of visitors are on IE6?

I talked to Cabela's yesterday and persuaded them to waive the shipping charges. New jacket comes tuesday.

in october 50% weren't on 6. that number has fallen to less than 15%. if it were still 50 i'd be worried. quite frankly, i probably won't be making any permanent changes removing anything until after the hunt anyway

Okay, I wasn't sure where to put this...but it's a software/technical question. I work part time for an attorney who prepares documents that have to (at completion) also be converted to searchable PDF files. I'd LOVE to find a cheap or free program that will do the conversion AND maintain the bookmarks that Microsoft Word creates, so you can jump from a coded Table of Contents directly to that section in the document. Haven't found such a program yet. My OS is Vista (and I've had zero problems).

Can't spend the major $$$$ that Adobe asks. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, either way!

Oh...and this job is work I do from home, so any program would be on my dime. I know, of course, you will take that into account!

There are a bunch of PDF writer printer drivers out there. I'll google some when I get back home.

Thanks, Ares. I've looked around, but not found what I'm looking for. If you need it, the printer I use for this type of work is an HP Laserjet P1005. Small home-office laserjet, but does the work for me.

As always, appreciate your help. I'm usually very good at finding this kind of stuff, but have hit a brick wall here.

Just another hunt for you, huh?

(...off line until tomorrow...thank you again!)

P.S. No great rush. I need it, but I don't need it yesterday or anything. Enjoy your evening!

For now, check out www.pdf995.com. That one may be sufficient. If you use taxcut, you automatically get the non sponsored version without the web page ads.

KK - don't think either of these are "free" but we use summation and/or concordance for some littigation support work at my work. These will tie the bates page numbers and info together, makes them searchable. Pretty powerful stuff

Yet another question. It rarely freezes here in San Antonio, but this year we had two (what we consider) hard freezes back to back.

Anyone up there grow Cannas? If so, I'm looking for some free or relatively cheap rhizhomes to put into the ground here. We don't have to dig them up in the winter normally. Mine will probably come back, as a hard freeze here rarely goes 3-4 inches into the ground,

But if anyone is willing to share Canna rhizhomes, I'll certainly at least pay the postage. Just let me know. The freeze killed everything that's been living in our flowerbeds for years. Although I think the roses will be fine! I've even propogated a few.

I know, this isn't the "gardening thread." Sorry!

I am looking to replace my bedroom TV. I presently have a 27" dinosaur in there, bought in 1993.

It sits stop my armoire (which is 68" tall).

I've heard that some of the newer TVs distort when looked at from an angle - anyone else had that experience?

I was looking at a 32" Westinghouse 720 last night at Target on sale (regular $399) for $299. I have a 10% off coupon, but it was at home, and I wasn't sure that was the TV I wanted anyway.

I do think a 32" might be big enough for the bedroom.

And of course, I want to get a good TV at a good price.

Not sure if the upgrade to the 1080 is something I should consider.

My cable service is just regular cable (at this time) - not high definition.

I have the TV on a lot at night when I can't sleep, so I'm thinking I would enjoy something newer and nicer than what I've got, and mine is starting to sound weird, like the speakers are going bad.

I'd love to hear what people have been buying lately and why - what do you like and what do you wish you'd done differently?

Thanks so much!

This would be a good question for the tech forum, heh.

That said, here is my opinions. So you know, I haven't purchased a tv myself in a long time. Like some typical tech geeks, I don't have money to buy the fancy toys, but I know how they work. mostly by setting up and playing with other peoples.

LCD tvs are just like laptop screens, they have a certain viewing angle before the picture starts to fade. Some are better than others, my girlfriend spent some time looking around at displays before finding one she liked that had a good range of view on it. That one happened to be a Toshiba.

1080 isn't much of a consideration unless you're planning to get into blue ray movies, at least imho. Most TV broadcasts in HD are only 720 anyways, and HD cable only has a few channels currently in 1080. Given the longevity of LCD televisions, by the time everyone is using 1080 as a standard, your current TV, even if it supports 1080 now, will probably be out of date, needing an upgrade, or at the end of it's expected life.

Also, make sure when you go out looking to check the sound on the tv out. A lot of these new tvs have horrible speakers. I think their idea is that you'll be hooking the tv up to a surround sound stereo and won't use the built in sound. Typically the better brands have better sound, figures doesn't it?

As for brands, I know one of my friends bought a Sony with all the bells and whistles (get this, it automatically adjusts the brightness to match the lighting in the room), it's got a great picture and good sound. My parents bought an LG that seems pretty decent overall, and it's about the size of what you mentioned wanting. The only weird thing on theirs is it developed a dark region on the right side of the screen. Not terribly noticeable though, and my dad likes to rearrange the living room every 3 months, so I'm assuming it happened when he moved it. My grandmother has a Polaroid that she got for Christmas one year, it has the most awful sounding speakers I've ever heard on a TV. Also it has issues with the HDMI ports (my cousin hooked up his PS3 to it and it had these funny blue lines in parts of the picture, very odd). My cousin bought a Panasonic 42 inch, which I thought had a really good picture, but he returned it to buy a 50inch Visio that was about the same price. That one had a really nice picture as well, and watching a blue ray movie on it was almost surreal. Like a better picture than what I had seen the movie in the theater with. Actually, it was almost too good of a picture, if you can fathom such a thing.

Well, there's what I've got, hope it helps you in your quest.

I've got a Westinghouse 32" 240 or 520 that I got 3 years ago I am very happy with, at about double what they're asking for the one you're looking at. They've really come down in price.

For HDTV your cable bill should not go up as it's just a matter of switching boxes, not actual service. If it does I think it would only be a couple bucks. Please get HDTV. You will be amazed and very happy. It is like most things and you become used to it. But initially it has a 3Dish quality. I'm really pleased with both the TV and HDTV because, like you I don't sleep too much at night so my TV is on a lot.

I don't have cable at all and I just got a special antenna with a booster and it works perfectly.

My TV tells me the majority of the stations around here are coming in at 1080. If weather or a plane or something causes it to go down to 720 I lose the picture and sound but can still receive the signal (vs receiving "No Signal" message). I was under the impression all HDTVs rec'd 1080.

I don't have a Blu-Ray player but would like one.

The darker the room, the better a plasma will be. The more you watch from the side, the better plasma will be. For straight on viewing, LCDs are great and use less power, and hold up better to light. But you can't see them from the side.

I am chairing my son's elementary school silent auction to take place on March 6 (Edgerton Elementary in Maplewood).

Does anyone have any goods or services that you would like to donate?

Each year our school hosts a Carnival/Silent Auction as the main fund-raiser of the year. This will be our 12 or 13th year of this event and we have managed to raise on average $5000 a year to help with various projects around the school (including paying for supplies so teachers don't have to out of their pocket) and our kids are not out selling door to door.

Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Or you could just get one of those lazy susan, swivel things to put the TV on, so that way, when you sit on the side of the room, you can just turn it...

I haven't found anything yet, me2. Just in research phase.

I am having my bedroom painted in April. I hope to buy the new TV as I put that room back together.

But I may end up waiting longer, depends on what I find when I start actively looking.

I have put off buying anything new for a long time, thinking I'd be moving soon. But I am thinking now it could be awhile, so I might as well start living the way I want to, here.

well, since you are still planning on moving, the rafters in the garage make a great place to store all of those boxes that come with the tv's so you can repack them for safe transport later on. i've got a big old stack of boxes up there just for that purpose. well, for me its more so i have a convenient way to ship the things when upgrades come along and we re-sell them.

Oh yeah, I've got the TV boxes downstairs - they made the move up here - which is how I know I haven't bought a TV in over ten years! In fact, I recall the day in 1993 when I bought the TV that is now in my bedroom, and that may very well be the newest one in the house.

I've made them several times and had bookmarked the post so I have the recipe

The "Fire King Lily Pad Poppers" were ours.

1 8oz pkg. Cream Cheese

1 Cup Shredded Cheese

1 lb Bacon

12 Jalapeno peppers

Cook the bacon.

Mix cream cheese , 1/2 the shredded cheese and 4 crumpled pieces of bacon in small bowl

Wash Jalapeno's , cut end off, split in half and remove inside & seeds (w-spoon)

Fill Jalapeno's with cream cheese mix, place them on baking pan(cookie sheet), sprinkle the rest of the shredded cheese on top and place in oven for 10 minutes on 450.Take out and top with bacon slices.

-- *BIG SIGH* May need some help. Wife (Sally) served divorce papers yesterday. Her reasons made no sense and there was nothing that happened in our marriage that justified a divorce.

She asked me to leave and her large family all came over like it was some sort of intervention or something. I called my parents and we all had a long talk - but her family kept talking for Sally and she barely said anything. Apparently this has been planned for a few weeks through a couple family members and I was not given any warning whatsoever.

I am in a hotel pleading for counseling and a 2nd chance. If not, I may be homeless by the end of the week. Anyone know of an East Metro place to rent cheap?
