I've spent a couple hours reading up on new processor technologies. Sheesh, I could seriously get lost in intel's website....

I'm thinking my next PC will have a core i5 or core i7 processor... not terribly sure yet. I guess it depends on how much I want to spend.

But, I figured before I buy a new computer, I need to know a bit more about what's at the heart of it.

Wheew... gonna take some time to figure out I think. Almost makes me nostalgic for the good old days when there were only a few processor options, and I knew how most, if not all, operated.

I am a AMD Man and ALWAYS WILL BE!! I Dont know why I just have loved them! Ok when there were hard wired to the boards Pro. I hated them but at that time there were not a lot of options to build your own PC out there!!

I just got a new HOT I LOVE IT!! AMD Phenom II Black Edition x4 965 for WAY UNDER $200 it is going reg for about $350 and I love it!! would have loved to go up one more but Money is tight!! And I am happy with this! but I do have to say if you going to go Intel make sure it is all SLI compat. just to make things Fly and run Smother!!

Maybe the Reason I like AMD is they are always on sale some place and you can get them Cheap and they are strong for what I like to do! :eyeroll:

Ok I need help I dumped my cable TV to get netflix TV I got the Roku Digital Video Player It has a Ethernet hook up so I got a USB Ethernet adapter but it wont work grrrr now bella has no TV

USB = Garden Hose

Ethernet = Fire Hose

Works OK for temporary data, like printing or file sharing, but streaming video is like the fire hose running at full volume - the garden hose just won't keep up.

Do you think I need to get a wireless Internet router set up
Fri, 05/21/2010 - 4:05 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

Actually a USB to ethernet adapter doesn't work in the method you're attempting.

What are you using for your Internet Service? Cable? DSL? Most likely your service comes into your home via a modem. It will have probably at least one ethernet port and probably a USB jack. Possibly wireless as well.

If your modem only has one ethernet port, you need to get either a hub or a switch. I would reccommend a switch just for bandwidth issues. Then, get an ethernet cable, hook it between your Modem and your switch/hub (The uplink port if it's a hub). Then, hook up another ethernet cable from your computer to the switch/hub, and finally a third ethernet cable from your roku player to the hub/switch.

That should allow for everything to play nice together.

Its cable, ok thanks KCOGRN i will look in to getting a switch hub

you won't find a pure hub anymore. everything is switched. your best bet is most likely going to be to get a 4 port wireless router.

If you get a wireless router don't forget to lock it down so you don't get leeches.

Switch might be about the same price, possibly less of a setup headache though.

Speaking of graphics and video drivers.. I'm having some issues with my girlfriend's mother's laptop. It's not running various flash media. It will run some flash okay, but some facebook games don't load all content and I haven't tested a ton, but at least NBC's inhouse media player sticks on loading media.

They said they reinstalled flash and it didn't solve the issue. It was tested on a couple different web browsers (did I ever mention I like having more than one web browser?) and produced the same results.

I was suspecting video drivers, but via HP's site, they're up to date. It's an ATI Mobility Radeon 3200. Here's the kicker, Windows 7 on the same laptop loads all flash content properly. It uses a slightly more updated video driver (although I suspect it's just the windows 7 version, nothing too dramatically different). There's one more thing I can try I found on Adobe's site regarding Windows Vista installations.

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html

Keeping this link here so I have it handy for tomorrow as I try to resolve the problem.

I know, some people would just say it's because flash sucks or is problematic to begin with. Unfortunately, it's the adopted platform for a lot of web content right now, so I have to deal with it or tell them they can't access these sites. I will agree though that a more open platform should be used (most likely html 5) so one company isn't holding all the cards and setting all the standards.

Could this be that they are running a Newer version of IE Exp. IE8!! I Know that there are alot of Apps. that were done on IE6 and there are Compatibility problems with the 2 that they Will NEVER FIX!!

because IE6 is Long since gone!

but on another note I got Ubuntu to Install on that computer and things went down hill from there!!

no mouse and no keyboard that will work on it uninstalled and re-installed it and still nothing!!

it worked tell I went and let it do the upgrades to all the drivers and stuff then thats when it all went down hill!!

Help me KC!! Or some body!!

I know KC knows his stuff and has been helping me a ton! I just wish he would sit down with me and show me were the hell I am going Wrong! lol

KC0GRN

Actually I find the best way to learn is to sit down and figure things out yourself. Granted it takes more time that way. I had problems after ubuntu updates too, mostly video driver related though, mouse and keyboard issues never seemed to be a problem. You would think that input devices are pretty rudimentary.

No, my issue isn't browser related, as firefox and google chrome do the same thing.

I successfully repaired it by doing a clean uninstall of flash before installing it again.

Awhile back, a window started showing up when I boot up my computer.

It is for Windows Office Live, which looks like a cool idea, but it isn't anything I knowingly signed up for.

Now, in my routine Windows Updates, it wants to update me with "Office Live 1.5 add in", but is asking me to agree to terms (Microsoft Service Agreement Last Updated: October 2009).

I don't usually have to agree to terms to do a Windows Update, so does this seem like it is related to the Windows Office Live 1.5 add in, or is this something everyone has to re-agree to periodically?

As a separate question, has anyone here used Office Live? It seems like a really handy way to be able to access my work documents from where-ever I might be and not have to e-mail them to myself or put them on a flash drive.

Thanks for any help and advice! You guys rock!

KC0GRN

I haven't really heard of office live, but then, I use open office myself.

I would assume Microsoft is trying to push it because google docs is getting more widely used, and obviously that's a threat to them.

I would also assume since Office Live probably makes your documents accessible over the internet, the terms agreement is probably mandatory because they don't want to get sued by anyone who uses a weak password or somehow has their data stolen by thieves. I wouldn't think it's something windows update would typically ask you to re-agree to or people would complain about it.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know how the thing got on my computer in the first place. It opens up when I boot up. It looks like an IM format, and I figured Windows must have decided to sneak it in. I assumed it was just a chat option until I saw this update and terms agreement when I went to do Windows Updates. I don't use it, never have, so I'm guessing I don't need to update it! But I guess I'll have to uninstall or delete it so I don't keep getting prompted to do Windows Updates on it.

Try renaming the windows installer to .old (as in msi.old) and copy a new version from a office cd.

Don't know if this is your problem or not, but it worked for my step daghters computer. She couldn't install or download anything because of a virus. I replaced this file and was at least able to install some anti-virus software which eventually fixed the problem (Thanks AVG Free and Malware bytes)

Computer acts like new now. Hope this might help.

ok I have a TON of pictures that I want pull from Mikes Server. What are my best options for doing this? would I need an external hard drive .I've heard of them but never seen or used one. All I know is that I don't want to use 100 CD's or anything that would be a pain in the sas.... Are there different degree's of goodness when it comes to them are they easy to use?

if you've got a dvd burner, dvd's hold a lot more data than cd's. right click on the folder and hit properties. when its done adding them up, let us know how many gb's they're using.

Most Photo Libraries are not "huge" enough to justify a drive-to-drive backup - they would fit probably on 2-3 DVDs at most. It would be smart to make a complete backup of everything just in case there's financial files or other critical stuff buried you may need later that you forgot about.

There are all kinds of external hard drives that can hook up and transfer files easily off your computer. None are terribly expensive. They go by big round numbers. Smallest is probably 500 GB, which is matching the size of most computers' hard drives sold today. I'd probably get the 1000 GB, or 1 TB drives, since it would give you the space to make two complete backups of your computer if needed.

One note - check that the drive (and the computer) have the thicker Fire Wire (or "1394") cable ability. That cable can transfer a heckuva lot faster than the standard slim USB cable. If you have just USB, you probably gotta let it run overnight to make a complete backup.

flash drives are easy. Just plug them in. The computer will find it and run it automatically. Just copy and paste all the pics to it.

we have 1000's of pictures dating back to 2002 when we got our digital camera and I know the file sizes are all like 2-5 MB each. There are also some video's and stuff as well. I'm somewhat technology stupid so thats why I come to you!! Any and all suggestions will be taken into concideration.

I will do that when I get home tomorrow and I will let you know. It's probably not as much as I think but it seems like it should be a lot because there are a TON of pictures.

l and a mommy

hmmmm there are as many files as I thought but of course not as much memory used as I thought there would be. Give your opintions based on 15.8 GB of pictures please and thank you. 7,871 pictures/video's. I was thinking it'd be closer to 50 GB but what the hell do I know....

should be able to get that on 4 dvd's.

then get another to pull everything out of "my documents" and mike's documents for that matter. both may come in handy.
