they have Karaoke on Saturday nights.
As I said before, I'll go where everyone is, but I'm worried about the smoking in the tent. For those of you who don't know, because of the type of chemo I've had, second-hand smoke (or first-hand, for that matter) is very bad, bad, bad for me.
Selfishly, I admit, I need to know more details about where we'll be. In the tent? Out of the tent? Smoking? Non-smoking? Etc. I fly for this event and need to make sure it makes sense financially for me. If everyone I want to see is out in a smoke-filled tent and I'm inside, I'm not sure if I should attend. And, I know how these things go. People will say they'll stay inside for me, but inevitably, they'll walk out to the tent, get caught in a conversation and I never see them again. I don't expect everyone to change their plans for me. But, I do need to know the details so I can make a decision.
(If the tents are only going to be used for overflow (according to BFG), why are they putting them up in the first place? Yarusso's is plenty big for all of us. And, if they don't rent the tents, there will be more parking and the cost of the event should be cheaper.)
And Me being a Smoker and All I would be willing to make them and PUT THEM UP! for Everyone's health!!
because I have said and still say that I Wish I had NEVER started Smoking!!!!!
but again I would love to see you still and I hope it all pans out for the Predig so we can all get to see you!!!
i'm sorry if thats selfish or whatever, but the pdg has been a free event, open to anybody who wanted to come and there shouldnt be any reason for that to change
its not that we cant afford it, because we can....i just dont feel like shelling out the loot to feel like i have some kind of special v.i.p. status...
just doesnt feel right, and so I wont do it.
I cant speak for Carolyn.... she may decide to come, but I'll be elsewhere that night.
personally, we would think that in order to heat the tent effectively it would be build up as an indoor space rather than a patio even though that' where its going, and subject to the state's smoking laws, so smoking would be prohibited, but like your postulate, that's also speculation. all this speculation needs to be resolved, so that we make sure we're getting exactly what we're bargaining for
I too am curious who is handing the cover charge - Is Yurusso's charging their normal patrons to come eat that night as well? How would that work?
I'm sure we're not being relegated to a tent. They talked about us eating from a buffet, and they can't really set up a buffet in the tent. So as it's been suggested, the tent would be for overflow. That being said, you can probably expect to either spend a fair amount of time in the tent, or a lot of time in a very crowded restaurant space.
As for smoking, because the tent is heated and thus enclosed, I'm almost certain smoking would not be allowed in it. However, I would bet that there will be smoking near it and some could drift inside so it may still be a problem for those who are quite sensitive to it.
As for paying a fee to enter, I think the debate is a little over the top here. Now I understand that some people think of this as a group of people meeting in a public space because indeed that's what it was for a long time. Subsequently it seems crazy to some people to have to pay to go to a public space and hang out. The problem is that "public space" doesn't entirely work for us anymore. Partly it's because of size, and partly it's because we want to have activities that bystanders wouldn't be interested in. Like it or not, we're moving closer to the need for private space, and private space simply isn't free.
So is there a way to bridge the gap? Here's a couple of possibilities.
What if we did have a private event from say 4-9pm? During this time we would have the reading of the clue, the park pick pool, games, a buffet, drink specials and so on. The cost to do this is $10 (or maybe less) for those that wish to do that. After 9pm the buffet is put away, the activities end, and it becomes just a bunch of people hanging out in a bar with other people free to come and join them. Hopefully enough people come for the special part of the evening to cover any additional costs associated with it.
Another option would involve a different venue. If Joseph's were available for example, all they require for their private room is that we collectively spend $500 on food and drink (and it's completely unrealistic to think we wouldn't), whatever that food and drink may be. Gabe's has a similar setup though their room is smaller. I could find some other options if need be. We were originally leaning towards Yarusso's because someone implied they would give us the entire place. But if that's not the case, and we need an overflow tent which in turn will take away a lot of parking, the logistics start to become almost as problematic as Obbs.
Finally, I want to strongly discourage anyone from jumping on Red Bear for his efforts. When you go to an establishment to talk about this sort of thing, a lot of ideas and possibilities start to bounce around and you want to come up with the best plan you can. You simply can't confer with the group on every detail as the discussion is happening unless the whole group goes with you. Consequently the representative will then come back to the group afterwards with what sounds to them like a good plan which they have negotiated in good faith. If you disagree, then fine, the plan can almost certainly be changed, but don't fault them for making a plan in the first place.
the subject of the tent didn't even come up. they're expecting the buffet to be inside. we deem this to be a good thing.
there will be a cover charge, along the lines of what our subject redbear has brought back to us, which will include access to the buffet, which is expected to be largely what they serve for their lunch buffet. we also deem this to be a good thing. our concerns regarding the fairness of an extra discount for an imperial cooler crew button will be communicated to them in terry's forthcoming lunch tomorrow.
drinks will be half off. we deem this to be a >very good thing.
this event will be an official winter carnival event. as our subjects in general seem to consider this to be a good thing, we deem this to be a good thing as well, though we still don't know what this will get us. perhaps our colleagues from the realm of vulcan can stop by and provide us some entertainment after the crowning of their new emperor. as by this time we will have suffered through two months of excruciating cold, the other guy needn't come though he may if he so chooses, since we open our realms to all who wish to celebrate civilly.
negotiations are still ongoing to have this be an official clue release party. this may be the biggest benefit we can derive from our proposed alliance with the winter carnival.
the remaining question, which will be resolved tomorrow, is that of smoking in the tent; we expect that this will be in the negative, as in order to be heated, said tent must be enclosed.
whereas we have received or will be receiving answers to our questions regarding the event and,
whereas we have had a general consensus that Yarusso's become the home of the annual predig gig for the 2011 treasure hunt and,
whereas we have had multiple representatives contact this facility on our behalf to get us the best possible situation and,
whereas we deem this to be the best possible situation and,
whereas we have general consensus that this is a good idea,
now therefore be it resolved that we, ares the first, of the cooler crew and all his other realms, emperor, head of the commonwealth, defender of the faith, do declare that yarusso's is an acceptable location for the 2011 predig gig and encourage our subjects to do the same, asking any questions which they may hereby have for passage to camo terry for answers.
we also deem that we need an official seal for sealing such matters. we believe that will have to come another day though.
Some one had to grab the reins and get the wagon movin'!
Confirmed?
btw - funny take guy. I'll just call you The First

Good job!
1. There will be NO COVER CHARGE.
2. This will be a fundraising event. All fundrasing will be handled by the individual parties involved: If you're selling buttons, you're responsible for your own tax implications and money intake. The party is a fundraiser for St. Paul Parks beautification AND the SPPHF. Monies will be collected by Yarusso's staff.
3. NO COVER CHARGE.
4. Dinner will be served, proceeds from the dinner will benefit #2. Costs involved are as follows:
a) Rookie - No button, no 'nuttin: $10. THIS IS STANDARD PRICE FOR THE BUFFET THERE.
b) Winter Carnival Button Holder: $8 BUTTONS WILL BE SOLD ON SITE.
c) Treasure Hunter: $5 ALL TREASURE HUNTER BUTTONS ALLOWED. COOLER CREW, CAMO CREW, DIGGIN'S, ETC - ALL HUNTERS WELCOME.
For the record, since some/all of you will accuse me of something nefarious, this was what YB wanted to do.
5. THERE IS NO COVER CHARGE. ANYONE CAN COME IN AND DRINK. YOU'LL PAY TO EAT, WHICH WILL SUPPORT THE CHARITIES.
6. The clue will not be held back till Sunday's paper. Instead, Ma Press will be publishing an advertisement to the Cooler Crew's Pre-dig gig in Saturday's paper. In order to avoid some/all of you accusing me of doing some/everything wrong with the ad, the paper will be laying it out for us. Once again, I AM NOT DOING ANYTHING WITH THE AD. DON"T GET PISSY WITH ME IF YOU DON't LIKE IT. This will all be done free of charge, with thanks from Ma Press for 10 years of supporting the Treasure hunt.
7. The PDG is now a Winter Carnival Event, officially, thanks to Beth and Annette meeting at the Chamber of Commerce Christmas party last night.
8. THERE"S NO FREAKING COVER CHARGE. LEAVE ME THE @#$@# ALONE.
9. There will be tents, heated, 100% covered, on the patio area, for overage. Nobody will be forced out there. Annette asked me to remind you all that they do 600 bikers on a bike night with no problems, so they know what they're doing.
10. NO COVER CHARGE.
11. Happy hour all night. FOR EVERYBODY.
Ok, commence your bear-bashing. I'm washing my hands.
any part of that you don't want in the announcements?
Thanks for the official notice big guy. That's cooler! We're in the big time.
And even though we all have our moments of PMS you're still OK in my book.
Thanks for jumping on this Bear. I'm sure Annette is tired of talking about it at this point. I'd hate to have 10 people asking her questions to where she thinks we're a fickle bunch or something. hehe :lipsealed:
BTW - I heard there was going to be a cover charge. WTF? :coolfrown:
Bear answered just about every question so I couldn't think of any good ones.
Some could look at it as gambling.
Plus I really don't want to have people put down contact info if there are too many 'outsiders' picking a park. I usually present the $ to the winner at the RHB and it would be anticlimactic if they weren't there.
1. If they had 600 bikers, I'm guessing it was summertime and easier to be outdoors. Still, if they feel confident they can handle the crowd, then at this point I think we owe them a chance to try.
2. The Pioneer Press has been supporting the treasure hunt for a lot longer then 10 years, hasn't it?
I apologize if this has been answered and I missed it, but could I get some clarification about the smoking issues that were raised? Thanks.
The advertisement is a thank you to the cooler crew for 10 years of supporting the treasure hunt.
It's still the cooler crew party, so no reason why the park pick can't go on. Be advised that Annette will be trying to arrange press to be there.
White armbands: Only if you bring white rabbits to share for everybody, big dog. Seriously, if you get the buffet you'll get a wristband (calm down, they'll be provided by Yarusso's) so they know who paid and who didn't.
Times: Whatever, I'm not going to decide that, because whatever I'll choose will be invariably wrong, Someone else can decide.
Food: Only buffet served that night. No menu options. You want to eat, you buy the buffet. Which, supports the event as a fundraiser anyway. And since it's all you can eat if you wait long enough you'll get something you like.
98 was at cherokee, and the re-hash was that year...
we showed up with no paint on, had 2 hot dogs a piece, and left.... I think the only people that saw us were Terry and Ian. and they were lucky, because we tried to be sneaky. :coolfrown:
However, the statement was about supporting the hunt, not the anniversary of the pdg.
Frankly, I'm tired of shoveling.
