Great idea! Hey, if they can use leafblowers...

Just got our buttons today. There's going to be a lot of snow to move! I bet it will go to the last clue.

Make sure you're wearing Vulcan red and black. Those not wearing appropriate attire to the predig with yarussos not liking the vulcans and everything will be skinned.

:lipsealed: I agreed to not listen...but.... I have all the parks at 45 degrees north longitude. With the degrees and with how many acres and what burb they are in LOLOLOL and the 1st clue isn't out.

LOW And BEHOLD... MY LONG LAKE REGIONAL PARK that I have been barking about (no pun intended) for the past several years is at 45.066 longitude. I am Hunter Crazy  :pbpt:

This has to be the best post from the crazy board, its from Pilothatsguy!!!

They are banned. Didn't you read the full rules this year?

No purchase is necessary to win. Photo copies or online printouts from TwinCities.com of the published clues will be accepted. All contest rules and decisions are final. Employees and immediate family members of Pioneer Press, TwinCities.com, the St. Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation, all contest partners, Jake and Rob are not eligible.

Thread of the year on the main PP board:

"Anyone else think ValleyGirl should stop talking?"

I almost fell out of my chair when I read it!

Ah, it's a good day. Listening to parts of the new REM album and positing back on the good medallion hunt boards with a renewed membership. Good to be back here with everyone! (well minus Jake and Rob, they're cheating a-holes). I've decided I have five goals this hunt:

1) Find the medallion (obvious)

2) drink 12 days straight (even more obvious)

3) Get my daughter Sydney out hunting (weather permitting)

4) F with the morans on the PP boards

5) See how effective a combination of a lighter and eating a case of White Castle hamburgers is for melting snow.

Tough call which one will be the most fun.

She's the reason I left that board ... lol.. during Crosby she went off the deepend. She posts every thought in her head, goes off on sixty million tangeants and every thread she starts small talk converstions about stuff that has nothing to do with the hunt.

If you notice the dates she's been noodling since mid december. I reminded her the other day that there aren't any clues out yet. :pbpt:

In the opinion page of the PP today:

SPOTLIGHT LETTER

WINTER TREASURE

Here's my idea of what the first winter carnival medallion clue should be every year.

The Carnival's here with lots of snow

And soon we'll be digging for treasure!

While you're out and about with shovel in tow

Dig a fire hydrant out for good measure.

For some reason I always thought ValleyGirl was really a guy posing as a woman. Just seemed like kind of a male energy to me for whatever reason. But some people say they've met her in person and it really is a woman. Either way, definitely over caffienated.

Heh. I read that one today and laughed too. The folks across the street in whose yard the hydrant sits always clean it out, but if they didn't, I would. Too many people don't understand the value in it because they can't see that far into the future and ask "what if?". So I propose the following:

As we run amok, in search of the puck,

With shovels as our only tools.

The masses must be taught, that the hydrants they ought,

To keep clear lest their homes burn like a fool's.

Sorry it was just learned into me that it's your responsibility to keep your local hydrant clear, not mine. And you know what they say about feeding a man fish versus teaching him how to fish.

Ares I just went into the CC page and wanted to reprint out the complete list of past hiding places but all the blue boxes on the sides seem to be covering up half of the writing and I can't read it let alone print it. Oh and on that page it seems to have a messed up count down clock it's saying 32 days to the pre-dig

EDIT: I was able to print it but on the webpage itself I can't read it because everything is all covered up.

I was thinking of the hydrants in the parks. Or are those cleared by city workers? Not that I'd probably be able to *find* the hydrants in this deep snow.

what browser are you using (and what version)? with ie8 and firefox i'm not seeing the sidebars covering everything up. i'll check with ie7 when i get into work this morning.

if all else fails you can select the middle portion of the page and when the print dialog box comes up you can choose just to print the current selection.

as for the date being wrong, the code that generates that page doesn't automatically calculate the date for the event like the main drupal content pages do. still have to move the medallion hunt stuff into drupal you see.

on the flip side, i can't imagine many fires needing to be extinguished in the middle of a park in the middle of winter.

give a man a fish he'll eat for a day. teach him how to fish he'll eat for the rest of his life.

show a man fire he'll be warm for a day. set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life

There are strange things done in the midnight sun

    By the men who moil for gold;

The Arctic trails have their secret tales

    That would make your blood run cold;

The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,

But the queerest they ever did see

Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge

    I cremated Sam McGee.

it wouldn't surprise me in the least either. last night on my way home from work i couldn't help but noticed what looked like a full or almost full moon. made me wonder. i've been reading a bunch of old pp stories as i've been attaching them to the hunt pages on the cooler crew site. i seem to recall a story of box's where he said that they always hid the thing by the light of a big moon. though i can't seem to find it right now.

As another interesting note, Box's memoirs of the hunt, in light of the spotter conspiracy theories piqued my interest.

aw's q&a question:

You've become somewhat notorious, oh servant of Boreas

For knowing if we hunters are getting colder or hotter.

For some guessing is laborious, but there are so many more of us

Who are just dying to know if you keep watch with a spotter? -David Allison aka Allison Wonderland

received this answer:

Tho' you think us crazy as a loon

Our only spotter is St. Paul's winter moon

but yet don writes in his story:

I was lurking on the edges of Highland Park just as the medallion was found in 1994 near Montreal Avenue and Edgcumbe Road. I watched as the guy picked up the white package and then almost went goofy unwrapping the yards of hockey tape we added just as a final little torment to the finder

and

Many years before I became involved in the hiding of the treasure, I reported the finding of it and came upon a huge snowfield full of the last two categories of hunters.

The search zeroed in on the State Fairgrounds and I went there with a photographer, old Teddy Strasser. When we pulled it, our photo car — clearly marked with the newspaper's name — was mobbed by crowds demanding to know where we'd hidden the prize. So, we abandoned the car and melted into the throng.

oh yes, ma press most certainly uses spotters. the box basically confessed to being one himself even as he was the clue writer.

oh and joe!

Someone on the PP board made a good point, they could have hidden it a while ago and just posted it now. Also, I remember back to the big snowstorm, and the most snow was forecast for the southern and eastern metro. I wonder if that played into the decision of where to hide it if they actually hid it back then. Highland, Crosby, BC anybody?
