Also, when we got Syd's 1 year photos taken, our photographer took us to Langford Park where there were a whole bunch of ash trees with a ring of bark shaved off them. The sings said they were trying to get the ash borer to dig into those trees, then chop them down before they spread to other ash trees in the area.
Or maybe the prodigious bore is the entombed portion of the lower phalen creek that used to connect pahlen lake to swede hollow!
Between the 1890s and the 1930s, the railroad companies totally entombed Lower Phalen Creek within underground tunnels, and the creek's delta was filled and used as a railyard.
Ed Phalen was also Irish which gives us the connection with the overall theme of the clue.
Phalen Creek has been named after him as a result of claim near the creek in Swede Hollow. Phalen Creek travels from Lake Phalen and drains into the Mississippi River. Near the turn of the century most of the creek was covered over and routed through sewers. The lake that was drained by the creek became known as Phalen's Lake despite Phelan never living near its shores.
Love Phalen Creek and Bruce Vento. I was looking at a picture I took at the overlook over West 7th. It talks about the area to the right know as "the gorge" which it states is the only place on the Mississippi. It says its the steepest canyon. It stretches from St Anthony to about the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers at Hidden Fall or about at Pike Island.
I took a picture of a sign at Bruce Vento. I am going to relook at it now.
Nice... I've always like the idea of Upper landing - lower landing - lamberts landing area for a hunt.... it's really spread out - plus clues could fit all the other river parks. Let's hope - someone doesn't toss the medallion into THAT creek. heh :lipsealed:
Phalen Creek.... Well, I think of a glen as someplace that has water running through it and sort of raised land on both sides (much like in Swede) Phalen Creek is now underground for the most part, but it was probably a glen the whole way back then. Bruce Vento Trail from Lake Phalen to Bruce Vento Sanc is where Phalen Creek ran once.
I will probably walk the Wooley part of Battle Creek today as I really think of this as a traditional Glen. Best.
The problem with Bruce Vento is that it carries the title "nature sanctuary". Even though there is really nothing there (they haven't developed much yet - planted a few trees), I can't see them hiding it with anything in the name- nature, preserve, reserve, sanctuary in the title.
I love Bruce Vento, but my big issue with it is the newly planted trees. The signs say to stay on the trail to protect the plantings. Otherwise, I would be all over it.
And it is really like having 5 clues right now considering 2 of them were "double clues", not surprised though. They didn't truly reveal the park in 2009 or 2010 until clue 6.
There is a huge bronze statue of Andrew Jackson, in Jackson square in New Orleans, to honor him. He's riding a very large horse. The locals say that the statue was erected and facing the direction it is, because on the one side of Jackson Square there was a whore house, and the Madam hated him because he tried to drive her out of town. So after he died, she had the statue positioned so he was saluting her.
Not sure how NOLA ties into St. PaulÂ… but there you go.
Just for a sense of scale. that's me2 stuffed into one of the tunnel bores, still covered in soot from the days of steam locomotives along the northern pacific.
which interestingly enough j.j. hill bought out of bankruptcy.
Ps and Qs are just the plurals of the letters P and Q. There is some disagreement amongst grammarians about how to spell Ps and Qs - either upper-case or lower-case and either with or without an apostrophe. You may see the phrase as 'mind your p's and q's' or 'mind your Ps and Qs' or 'mind your P's and Q's' or (less often) as 'mind your ps and qs'.
Ps and Qs were often hard for typesetters to get straight....but there's another origin that says it's from tavern owners keeping tabs on quarts and pints...
Been digging through my old grad school files looking for stuff on my man Horace. I found one map of his showing his "grand rounds" plan for both cities (also have one of just Minneapolis). He also designed Oakland Cemetery off Jackson St in addition to many parks in town.
I cannot help but think that there is some anagram here that we are missing. Too many random things that don't make a whole lot of sense. I have had too much going on today to try the anagram thing. Would love to get together tonight and do some good old fashioned noodling. Did people go to Yarusso's or ABB? Would love to hash somethings out the old fashioned way-in person and over a beer or two.
Go to bed, I went to sleep last night at 9:30... no need to noodle all night long so early in the game. save your energy for later in the hunt. That's just my humble opinion.
Hidden Falls was the first thing I thought of after clue 1. Now the Cleveland thing is really got me thinking HF. I hate it when I subconsciously start thinking a park early on because I think that I get tunnel vision and ignore other possibilities.
Here's a quick theory. Supposedly, the videos don't aid hunters in finding the puck. I agree to an extent, but there are some things that are just too odd.
This page, for the 3rd video shows an owl with an eye covered.
In the clue, he references 'prodigious bore'. I know there's a story there, but if it's claimed that the videos add nothing to the hunt, can it be concluded that they might be useful in identifying red herrings? Just a thought, had to let it out.
Ah Yes. Bore Bugs. I'm sure you (MN) have as large of an issue as we do here with them. Except bore bugs are prolly attacking the live trees rather than the products made from them. I don't know alot about the Emerald Ash bores, but have a lot of work issues with bore bugs in general.
Have there been any parks with signifigant tree loss in recent times, due to infestations of Bores? The Emerald Ash bores, they feel will have damage that rivals the Chestnut blight (early 1900's) and Dutch Elm Disease.
I called ABB, they said they serve their full menu until midnight. Is that different than what you experienced? I'd love to come down there after my rehearsal tonight.
I think the point that was made is that if it is referring to typsetting it would be more likely to be "p's and q's" than "P's and Q's" as it is the lowercase letters that would be confused.
The tunnel from the powerplant to the ford plant and
the remnants of the sand mine under the plant itself.

Too bad I didn't have access to a fingerprint database.. Heh.
Whoops! Never mind.

Sorry I have not been to bed since this time yesterday! I am racking my brain got a few good things but nothing I am willing to sell myself on yet!
Great day to wander the parks.

I stayed in Sunday night (very busy weekend) and will be staying in tonight as well (I have to be at work by 6:30am on Wednesday)
BUT I will be out every night after that!
