Oh, thanks for this little added post. I was a little lost after the first one, actually I still am. And you're saying to take a cup out -- is the 1 C water/1 C flour added to THAT cup, or what was remaining?
And - How do I KNOW IF it's "happy"? and if indeed it IS happy, and now gets to reside in the fridge, what do you mean by "feed" it.
Sorry, I've never done this before. Just the Amish friendship bread Terry mentioned, and THAT was years ago - and traditional yeast breads.
But THANK you for the recipe. I will probably try to get something going in the next few days.
It explains it perfectly. The only thing that I've added to the recipe, is that I don't put it to bed in the fridge for at least 2 weeks from starting the batch, because last couple times I've tried it, I never got it to come back to life.
and happy? it' bubbles and gurgles, and darn near comes out of the top of the bowl. Trust me, you will know happy - and it smells a little like beer. mmmm.
Back in the '60's when I was going through my "earth mother" phase, everyone had a starter. That thing took on a life of its own! Now when I feel the urge to make bread I buy the little packets of Red Star and use the dough hook on the Kitchen Aid.
I've seen that French Bakery on University, mom. Think I'll stop next time.
We have a lot of artisan bakeries out here. But a small loaf of bread is between $5-6 a loaf, and that loaf is TINY. It is about 26 cents to 48 cents (depending on flavor) if I make it at home. Beer bread is a whopping $1 a loaf! Also the kids love the foccacia. I don't like all the preservatives that are in most of the breads you find on store shelves, and I don't think they need to have that much sodium. By baking my own, I can control what I put in there, as well as which flour I use etc.
Plus - there is this added benefit of me getting to whack the hell out of a mound of dough when I've had a bad day, and the satisfaction of seeing it rise and do what it's supposed to before baking.
Just had to share after the recent discussion....this came through on one of the caregiver lists I'm still subscribed to:
Sad Passing
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.
Dozens of celeDoughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. brities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.
Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie,
wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.
Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.
The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.
If this made you smile for even a brief second, please rise to the occasion and take time to pass it on and share that smile with someone else that may be having a crumby day and kneads a lift.
New enjoy - it's not really a 'promotion' of sorts, but in next few months, I'm going to be making a lateral position switch, which in years to come, makes me more 'promotable'.
what it really means: After 9 years, they have finally realized that I'm smart, and are taking advantage of that. :sheepish:
emjoy: family dinner time. If anyone would have asked me two years ago, if I'd enjoy sitting down to a dinner, including a 10, 8 and 4 yr old... I would have told you No way come heaven or hell.
"It actually is pilot shat guy. It comes from a story when I was in the navy. We had some shore leave in the midwest and after a long night of drinking we stopped by a White Castle, as any good drunk should at 2:00am. The next day back on the ship we were doing some F-18 drills. No sooner had I taken off when the delicacies of the night before caught up to me. Lets just say the poor recruits who were on mop duty that night earned their pay. The lesson in all this: Join the Army."
It's groovy. I took a picture of a picture that I have in my living room, and it came up with a link to the artists website. Who knew? Another picture I have hanging in the living room was used on an album cover, and another is weird, but it found the artist anyway.
It's been hit or miss with UPC codes, but is cool for what it can do
This isn't really an enjoy. More of a greatful. Surviving the last hour and a half with a sick 4 yr old. He woke up with a fever and crying and I've gotten him calmed. Medicated and tucked in bed. This whole mothering thing is not natural instinct to me. Thankful his dad will be home in another hour and stuck all day tomorrow with him. Instead of me.
it may seem a stupid purchase, considering I don't really play the games it was intended for, but I got one of these for 30 bucks on woot.com a few weeks ago.
it has come in very handy though, as I am sort of a power keyboard shortcut user. That combined with simple macro execution and I'm zipping along around website, computer tasks, etc.
Told a guy at work about it who is into WoW and he thought it was sacrilege to use a gaming pad for mundane tasks. Heh, I just thought it was a decent deal and has saved me some repetitive motion injury.
Enjoy: finally going through the web server directory, and getting rid of as much "old" stuff as i can from old crap on the cooler crew site, and making sure its in the Content Management System.
Yes, this includes an ass-load of pics from hunts going through 2005 that were on the old pages but not the new. All of the Zephy Cam pics are up in the 2005 hunt.

But here I am. and it's pretty damn fun.
They are actually really good kids. they also love unusual food. They eat carpaccio, sushi, pate', raw oysters, you name it - love all of it.
My favorite post on the internet. Ever.
Pilot shat guy, ftw.
And the app - Google Goggles. How cool is it to search with your camera!?!?!?
