Schlicker told police his father had taken away his Internet access after seeing suicide threats the teen had posted on social networking Web site MySpace.com.

The dad was right - the teen was wrong

All teenagers/your kids internet should be monitored

People have a weird way of blaming their problems on current events.

I honestly can't believe people can make such rash decisions as "My parents took away my video game/internet, I think I'll kill them". It seems like it's a scapegoat for something else.

If they can, then I'd hate to be out in public with such people. If society as a whole is getting that bad, then something is definitely wrong.

Then again, the media has gotten a lot bigger over the years. When word used to only travel across town, now once it hits the net, people on the other side of the planet start to know.

indeed. i look to jeff foxworthy for a lot of things and he's great on this subject:

"Nowadays you can’t even spank your kids. No, gotta give ‘em a time out. My dad would take time out of his busy day to blister our back sides."

which has probably led us to this situation:

"You take your kids they grow up and go off and blame all their problems on you. Some day I just want to see someone go on Oprah and say 'My mama was great, my daddy was great, I'm just a Shithead.' "

Life was simpler before the internet and video games.

The worst thing we did was tip over the Monopoly board or Rummy Royal table if we were loosing.

I actually folded up the Monopoly board with all the cards still inside and took it down to the basement incinerator once when my kids wouldn't stop arguing over a game. I was a baaad mamma. We still get a laugh about that. And yes, it was replaced.

Shakespeare's record with Jews is, of course, best explained by "The Merchant of Venice".

We had many board games, some of them very odd. The "visit to Walt Disney World" game, the "Good Ol' Charlie Brown" game, and the "Six Million Dollar Man" game. Oh, and the "Woodsy Owl" game. I think the last one was a freebie from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Needing some prayers and good thoughts. My father-in-law was hospitalized today. He had become dehydrated because he was worried about his annual cancer check and wasn't eating or drinking. He should be fine by tomorrow.

But...he's 88 years old, has a bad heart valve, and is diabetic.

Thanks everyone. I suspect the cancer check will be okay. It's been 5 or 6 years now. They never expected him to live more than 6 months. He not only lived, but there has been no sign of cancer since. Of course the bad heart valve is believed to be the result of the radiation he had at the time. That was when Inks' Mom was in the throws of Alzheimer's. Messy, icky time and then he fell and broke his hip just as he was getting his strength back from the radiation and chemo.

At 88 a person's time is getting shorter, but we would sure like to keep him around awhile longer. He absolutely adored Inks' mother and any of us could only hope to be loved the way he loves her.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A solar wind stream hit Earth during the late hours of Feb. 4th, sparking a G2-class (Kp=6) geomagnetic storm. Sky watchers in Scandinavia, Russia, Canada, Alaska and perhaps even northern-tier US states such as Maine, Minnesota and Wisconsin, should be alert for auroras on Friday night. The best time to look is during the hours around local midnight.

I hope the skies will stay clear tonight. This may call for a drive to darker skies.

Sorry about your Pa-In-Law TV. I hope everything turns out fine. Did he have a valve replacement? With both cancer and a bad valve myself my ears perked up.
Sat, 02/05/2011 - 8:33 AM Permalink
Terry

No heart valve replacement. When he had radiation, they believe that damaged the heart valve and because of his age, they won't do surgery.

His cancer was of the esophagus. That was a few years ago now. The radiation and the smaller amounts of chemo was the medical treatment. The doctors treating him at the time gave him about 6 months. The power of prayer helped bring the miracle that he not only survived, but has been cancer free since then.

Then about 3 years ago, he started having other problems and they found the bad heart valve. After being seen by a couple specialists, they said the surgery would be too difficult for a man his age and so they treat the symptoms, but won't do the surgery.

They believe that heart valve, being in close proximity to where the radiation was focused, caused the damage.

Dang. I hope he beats this thing. It's weird how one who doesn't really believe in prayer really changes his attitude once that's all he has.

Terry

I expect we will hear later today that he is much better and perhaps at home again. Just at his age, a simple thing like being dehydrated, along with his health issues, other complications can show up.

The longer I live, the more I see evidence of the power or prayer.
