My DVD player won't load. Once I get it to load (sometimes an hour...) it plays finew, but loading is another story. I sought help sometime ago (like a cleaning disc?????) and was told to just blow in it.

Otay. We done laughing and snickering? Good.

I have blown into this sucker until I have gotten light-headed and damn near passed out. Doesen't seem to have helped.

Is there anything I can do to fix it??????????? Can it be fixed? Does anyone know what the prob is?????? Is it dead????? Do I need to find the bucks for a new one??????

Please help if possible. I'm kinda frantic.

THANKS!

Yep, you can get a can of Blow Off Duster (compressed air) or something similar.

Found this on the internet, and it is pretty detailed, but all I have ever done is spray the compressed air and it has worked fine.

First things first, before you start cleaning your DVD player, remember to turn it off and unplug the machine from the television. Move it to a more suitable working environment, like a table or a desk.

Cleaning the Exterior: The exterior of the DVD player can be cleaned with simple household items, like rubbing alcohol and seltzer water. Use a cotton, lint free cloth or a cotton swab and apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to it. Gently rub the exterior of the player. While alcohol has the advantage of evaporating quickly, seltzer water has an increased cleansing action due to the carbonation it contains. Use the cloth to clean the player's vent areas, where dust might have accumulated. Avoid a duster, as it might just end up pushing the dust further inside. Cleaning the vents of the DVD player is of utmost importance, as heat dissipating from the inside of your DVD player might not be allowed to escape, causing it to overheat. You could also clean the vent by using a can of compressed air. It can be softly sprayed into the vent, to clear out the dust build up.

Cleaning the Interior: When your DVD does not load, or skips, and you note a deterioration in the audio or video signals, it may indicate the fact, that you need to clean the interior of your DVD player. This usually entails the cleaning of the lens of your player, which can ensure that the disc is being read properly. The easiest, most hassle free way of doing this, is by buying a lens cleaning disc. These DVD cleaning discs are easily available in the market and are often recommended as the first troubleshooting method, when you are trying to repair a DVD player, that is having difficulty reading discs. They contain bristles, situated on top of the disc, so that when the disc is inserted into the player, the disc begins to spin and the raised bristles on it dust the lens. Once the cleaning cycle of the cleaning discs is complete, the lens should be clean.

If you want to clean the DVD player thoroughly, you need to dismantle the player and clean the insides by hand. For doing this, you need to turn the machine over and look at the seams for finding the screws and the tape, that holds the case together. Remove the screws and lift up the tape, to expose the insides of the player. Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean all the surfaces, except for the bright green circuit boards. Use a can of compressed air, to flush out the dirt from hard to reach places. Remember while doing this, to not tilt, shake, or hold the can upside down, as the liquid nitrogen that comes out can damage your electronics and your skin! Once the alcohol is dry, reassemble your DVD player.

Cleaning your DVD player every four to six weeks ensures that your DVD player keeps running like new, for longer than you thought possible. There are also a host of commercial DVD cleaning kits available, which assist in cleaning DVD players while being easy on your pockets.

Thanks for the info! I thought more than blowing into where the DVD loads, but what do I know?

I think I will contact Mom & Dad and see if I can drop it off with them and give them an 'allowance' to work on it. They are both really good at doing electrical/electronic stuff I am not comfy with.

I did go buy a new DVD player so I do have my fix. But I would like to saee my old one working again if it can. And this way Mom and Dad can fiddle-fart with the old one at their leisure.

my computers been giving me fits lately and I'm wondering what the best option is to get it running right again is. From my past experience once a computer starts not running right it takes an act of congress to get it back to it's old self.

So this is what it is doing. Freezing up a lot or just refusing to open webpages. There are certain website's IT NEVER will open certain pages within them but I can open them just fine on the mac....The kids Webkinz games are a constant hassle but I'm noticing many other sites causing me issues too now. Then when I restart OMG it's like I'm back in the stone ages I can make a 5 course meal before it reboots ok maybe not that long but it's taking FOREVER.

So whats your suggestion to make it run more efficiently? It's been years since I've really had to think about stuff like this and everything is different now.

I'd start by updating Firefox web browser to the newest version, and lookup any Mac upgrades for JavaScript and install them as well. Usually when web browsing goes Wonky on my Mac, it has something to do with a Javascript or Flash upgrade that needs to be installed. There can be a week's delay between when someone updates their animation software versions and when the browsers catch up.

-- I also have video problems with my older G4 because it's cache speed hampers video animation, even though I have a decent graphics card installed.

You might want to post these in the technical questions forum, as I'm used to looking for things there.

First off, what kind of computer is it? I'm confused by your statements as to wither it's a Mac or a PC.

How much RAM do you have? This sounds like you might need more memory and might want to reformat your hard drive.

Adding ram is kind of like putting a bandaid on a problem.

Granted yes, if you have less than 256mbs, you might want to upgrade, IF your system will even support an upgrade.

Reformatting and reloading the OS is a good fix, as things just get bogged down after time and programs being loaded, etc.

Can anyone advise a better way to vent this dryer so that we can push the dryer in closer to the wall?

The view in this photo is from the top, and a a bit to one side.

Thanks, in advance!

If you need backstory, here it is:

As many of you know, I moved back to MN about a month ago. I am staying with a lifelong friend (some of you have met Vicky over the years) and we've been trying to troubleshoot some maintenance issues at her townhome that have been defying her efforts to tackle them alone.

First, we moved a cabinet, to accomodate the new fridge and that went pretty well.

Today, Vicky decided to tackle the issues of the dryer vent. We suspected that the vent needed to be cleaned, so she borrowed a vent cleaning brush (on a very long coated flexible wire), and it promptly put a hole through the (non-code) plastic vent pipe, then went to Ace Hardware for advice about what to replace it with. They sold her some materials and she came home to try to install them. When I came in this afternoon, I helped her get everything in place and held it there long enough that she could use the clamps, screws and duct tape to secure everything.

Problem is, the new vent pipe doesn't wind around to clear the water pipe like the old vent pipe did. The Ace guys told her she shouldn't have more than 8 feet of pipe, so she vented it upward in front of the pipe. Now the dryer won't push back into place (well, maybe we could push it in a bit farther, but would have to significantly crush the new vent pipe to do that).

I know dryer vents are necessary evils as they do take up space behind the dryer. It's true about having them shorter and as straight as possible. I believe short of moving the plumbing or the dryer, there isn't likely a good solution.

This one looks like it's metal, correct? The old one was more flexible is my guess, but more flimsy as well?

The metal ones are much better. We had one of those flexible ones here when we first moved into our home years ago. It eventually sagged and wasn't venting properly. The metal one, though less flexible, has been on this dryer now for years and it vents very well.

Kinda tough with the water pipe but try putting an elbow on the dryer 1st, then attaching the vent to the elbow. You can get the elbow at the same place you got the vent I would suspect. Or try menards, home depot, etc. You dont want to crush the pipe.

I need some help. I have this medallion-like thingy I lost recently. I was out looking at parks and I'm not even sure which one I lost it in. It has a Pioneer Press logo on it so it's very sentimental. If anyone should happen to find it, I'd be very appreciative if you could get it back to me.

Voicematch - A Love Affair between Two Voiceover Actors

My parents are MPR members and bought three tickets for this show 7 pm Sunday evening at the Fitzgerald theatre - for myself and my parents. Dad had some health issues come up and basically needs bedrest for the weekend. Apparently this is a ONE-TIME show, a 'Prototype' to test whether it could have legs as a traveling gig for the Prairie Home Companion crew.

My parents have the tickets at home, which is a two hour drive for me. I don't need to go to the show myself at all, but if anyone wants them please message me A.S.A.P. before Saturday.
