Our next door neighbors are gone until tomorrow sometime. We have their place and ours to plow out. We're going out in about an hour for the first round, later tonight for the 2nd and hope that overnight we don't get dumped on to the point where we'll be like we were in December.
Any idea how much snow has fallen so far? This isn't ending until tomorrow morning. I went out twice earlier today too, Terry. Just came back in and I swear there's another foot I had to shovel. I think this is more than that December storm. I think I'll rely on the goodness of neighbors to plow out my city sidewalk.
This is the second snowstorm of the season that I ended up having to go out to the end of the parkway and help my roommate get his vehicle home....
Sucks because I've stayed home both times specifically so I didn't have to fight getting my car home, but that's living in Minnesota for you, you help people out, especially in the snow.
While we were getting his car unstuck, an impatient guy behind him gets out of his car and complains about being late for work (Ok, this is a residential area, where is he working, some group home I don't know about or something?). A, during a snowstorm, I think it's generally accepted people will be late. B. Ok, fine, you're complaining about being late, but you obviously didn't give yourself extra time. C. How about giving us a hand so we can get the car out of your way?
It was 8pm at night, and there were 3 other cars stuck along this section of road.
Sorry, but I had to laugh once we got out of his way and he gunned it up the street, only to get himself stuck before getting to his destination.
I just finished getting my 2 vehicles out, snowblowed my house and 2 neighbors including their driveway, and pushed out a car from the street. Luckily my neighbor (who didn't need help) gave me some gas for the snowblower. I'm pooped!
Dont know what I'm gonna do about my cabin. Wont be up there for 2 weeks.
Not much action around this forum lately. Many of you may have noticed this being rather slow the past couple of days. Most of that is caused by the demise of World Crossing and the new folks joining here. There is very likely to be more as the date certain for World Crossing to go away is April 15th.
I asked if there was anything we could do to help and the subject of a new server came up.
Mark is working with some vendors today to see how that can be done quickly.

I am already working on the issue, but there are no quick fixes to the overall issue. Traffic was not increasing on the forum for a year, and revenue was not going up. So why would we invest in a new server? World Crossing had been limping around for 10 years and very few would leave it, and they kept it running. So this is totally unexpected and we're working to deal with the change in circumstances. Of course, we know it is really, really bad, but please go post on World Crossing and let them know Able Minds will be setting up a new server to accommodate the exodus.
Tim is doing what's possible to tweak the current instance and I am working on getting the forum on another server ASAP. Tim will be out of town until next week so he cannot help as much as usual. However, I am having two conversations today with data center vendors. One is our current vendor and that will be the easiest path. However, it looks like Thursday is the earlier they could have new hardware up for us. We might run a test later today or tomorrow on an available space on a shared server that won't necessarily make the site run faster but will confirm that the site can run in a different environment. The reason is that they don't have a large enough amount of RAM that we need on a shared server right now that we could see the benefits of giving Web Crossing the full 2 GB of RAM it can use.

That's a perfect opportunity to slow down to 1/10th your normal speed of getting something done. I actually love it when someone is stopped to wait for me to load my groceries or whatever so they can get my parking spot once I leave. I always vulture for parking spots. It makes my life more bearable, especially in the winter, to park close to where I am shopping. I have enough back and neck problems to not want to lug my purchases or push my shopping cart through the extra snow and ice if I park farther away. I do vulture respectfully, though. If I want to wait for their spot, it is no skin off their nose. Usually people are friendly and maybe even feel like they are doing something nice for someone else, when I suppose actually they are just doing what they were going to do anyway.
I stick my hand out and ask for a buck. Heck, it works for those guys at the bottom of the freeway ramps. Why not for a parking spot. At least people get something for their dollar.........a close parking spot.
Eags - I'm guessing that you are the kind person who holds the elevator door open for me when I'm half a block away who happens to get mad when I don't jump and run. jk I understand that spot is important to you but I hope you understand that I don't like people breathing down my back to hurry for them either. I got this way from a couple of times where I was asked to hurry in certain terms. "come on man, I don't have all day" well HA! I do :smile:
Although I do have the courtesy to move my car if paying inside at a gas station if there are no open pumps outside.
What are these "close" parking spots you speak of? our stupid lots are so packed with cars in 90% of the shopping malls, I just park in the last row, and walk in. Most of the time, I save myself 5 minutes of waiting, only to find out there weren't any spots where the train of cars are sitting anyway.

We are going to move forward and address the performance issues. We are putting our faith in the fact if we make the site work well enough folks will "cross over" from World Crossing to cover the cost of one server. That means 250 registrations will cover a server that costs about $2500. An unknown is whether we will need to spend more per month for bandwidth than we do now, but I am sure we will. However, we will cross that bridge when we get to it. In the short-term, we are going to move the site in the next 1-3 days to another server our data center provider can let us use as an interim solution. A second server is the most prudent approach because it allows for redundancy -- real-time mirroring of the web crossing database, a way to switch over quickly if there is any hardware failure on one server, and a way to deal with sudden growth issues.

Things have been a bit quiet in this place with all the hunts past for the time being.
I've been reading through all the new boards here with the influx of the World Crossing folks. There is so much activity that it's a bit overwhelming.
A short update on my father-in-law is they had moved him to a nursing home earlier today, had to bring him back to the hospital as they were having some trouble with a procedure, took care of that at the hospital and he's back at the nursing home this evening. Inks and Brian are going out to see him tomorrow. It was touch and go a couple weeks ago, but I understand that he's doing better.
You know how much Inks talks. His brother is the same way. So frustrating as I have many more questions than either one of them even thinks to ask.

We are going to move forward and address the performance issues. We are putting our faith in the fact if we make the site work well enough folks will "cross over" from World Crossing to cover the cost of one server. That means 250 registrations will cover a server that costs about $2500. An unknown is whether we will need to spend more per month for bandwidth than we do now, but I am sure we will. However, we will cross that bridge when we get to it. In the short-term, we are going to move the site in the next 1-3 days to another server our data center provider can let us use as an interim solution. A second server is the most prudent approach because it allows for redundancy -- real-time mirroring of the web crossing database, a way to switch over quickly if there is any hardware failure on one server, and a way to deal with sudden growth issues.

Things have been a bit quiet in this place with all the hunts past for the time being.
I've been reading through all the new boards here with the influx of the World Crossing folks. There is so much activity that it's a bit overwhelming.
A short update on my father-in-law is they had moved him to a nursing home earlier today, had to bring him back to the hospital as they were having some trouble with a procedure, took care of that at the hospital and he's back at the nursing home this evening. Inks and Brian are going out to see him tomorrow. It was touch and go a couple weeks ago, but I understand that he's doing better.
You know how much Inks talks. His brother is the same way. So frustrating as I have many more questions than either one of them even thinks to ask.
