Got a friend who's in dire need of a junker car that can last about 6 months to a year. - They're eligible for the vehicle donation programs, but the waiting list is a mile long. Just need basic set of wheels for maybe $500-$600 that won't catch fire or blow apart or anything like that. Any ideas?

There's a place in IGH that has a number of crap cars - he calls them "High school kid cars." That might work.

Friend found a cousin who's got an old Ford Taurus been in storage for several years. probably gonna cost a few $ and a new battery to resurrect it, but it should be functional - and it's paid for.

Looking for the name and number of an electrician.

Friend needs a ground fault interrupter rewired, was told at purchase three years ago that it was wired wrong, recently it was tripped and caused other outlets in the house to fail at the same time. Friend would like to get an idea of how urgent this situation is (GFI did its job vs. better get someone out there quickly). Also, second bathroom doesn't have a GFI at all. Home is just over 20 years old, so sounds to me like the builder skated on a few things...

Any thoughts or referrals would be great! Thanks!

one gfci can control more than one outlet if wired that way. It may have been doing its job. It takes very little to trip a gfci. They are easy to wire. Just wire the same way as an outlet.

Sometimes a GFCI goes bad too.

yup. i've had 3 GFCI's die on me. 2 outside and one in the basement. fortunately they're real easy like mikey said to wire up. now the important question is, does the thing reset when you push the reset button? if it does, push the test button and see if it trips again. if it does, it was just doing its job. hit reset and carry on.

now, it also sounds like potentially the same thing that i had happen. the gfci ended up going bad, and leaving something hot that wasn't supposed to be hot. i had to work to figure out why i was getting shocked touching the computer cases. the feeling of 120 is very familiar as it shoots through your body; you never forget it (that wasn't the first time i've taken a hit from a live electrical connection). needless to say, that circuit has been shut off for the last 3 months or so, since i haven't had time to replace it.

next thing to check, since multiple outlets went out throughout the house, is whether its the gfci or just a tripped breaker/blown fuse. the only reason i'm even mentioning it is that normally gfci's are only set up to protect the "wet" outlets (the places described in mikey's link). if there outlets not in those locations, they're either unnecessarily connected to the gfci (which isn't a problem, since there's no such thing as too much safety; its just a nuisance in this case), or there's a problem between the gfci and the electrical panel (most likely a breaker).

wish i could give you a name, but electrical is one of those things that i do on my own.

Ok I know someone had asked about Internet in the country before My Aunt lives just out side of Hinkley and cant get Cable she is just out side of the Range for it!!

I guess I had heard about someone having Dish internet anyone know anything about that or What Co. has that?

It's Dish TV. We use that both here and up in Sturgeon Lake.

Whoa -- Terry, please let me know sometime the nitty gritty on all of that!

We finally canceled the phone service *and* the cable late last summer, since we'd only made it north ONCE the entire year. Didn't feel it made sense to pay for the utilities we weren't using at all.

But this year I fully intend to get there as much as we can around softball schedules....SO, I'll want to have at least basic tv for when the weather isn't cooperating, and internet.

Terry

Mom - we use dialup for internet...after I got rid of Mediacom. That is cable and you can get both tv and internet. They just got on my last nerve - and to give up high speed internet you know it was my last nerve.

I know Frontier offers DSL. Our DishTV that we have here in the city allows us to have two boxes up north. We just needed to purchase the extra dish and boxes. It costs us about $10 over what we get charged for just the St. Paul.

i've heard that dish charges for receivers not connected to a phone line. i've never had a directv receiver connected to a phone line so i could put ours wherever i wanted. just have to have the dish in place. heck, if i were in y'all's shoes, i wouldn't bother paying for the extra receiver. just bring one back and forth from home.

Hmmm - I have an extra dish (they'd replaced the one at our old house a few years back) wonder if that can work. I don't need high speed for up there. Dial up (for the most part) has been fine over the years.

Sux that after just canceling last summer, we'll hafta get a new phone number for up there. Not that anyone ever calls us on that phone (well hardly anyone) - it was just a real easy number to remember. Oh well - glad the subject was brought up anyway, cause I need to remember to call and get services going before summer!

We used to do that with just the PVR - before we had any tv service. But we'd bring the box with all the recorded shows on it.

I'm interested in the recent influx of cellular/internet services somewhat. They initially were WAY too expensive, but they seem to be coming down. I think that would probably only make sense if we were to change our cellular service too though, and with 4 of us on a family plan with varying contract expirations....we'll probably be with AT&T forever.

imho, the data plan rates for cellular aren't worth it, considering the caps they have. you'd probably be better off ditching the phone line and using satellite on a value basis if you've already got cell service up there.

Cell service in the woods is iffy at best. When we still had our cell, often we would have to go out in the driveway down by the road and if we got lucky, we could make a call.

DirecTV also used to charge a bit extra if you weren't connected to a phone line. At any rate, their higher prices made us switch. I think its $5 with Dish if you don't have a phone line connected to the box. The higher rates with DirecTV far outweigh that small fee.

so DirecTV has Inter net also?

my aunt wont go with Dish any more! she had a problem with them before!

Girl, your replies today are so randy I swear Cluey figgered your password again!

Hey, speaking of heavy lifting.... (eyeroll)

The bank finally loosened it's death grip on the foreclosure home I've been trying to buy since October. I close Friday, April 29th. On Saturday the 30th - Weather permitting, if you can bring a folding chair and an able body to load a moving truck and unload it, I'll set up the BBQ and you can eat off my new deck!

Say I may be delaying that moving by a week - May 7th - the first weekend my cousin has a big hubub party in Hudson so I won't be able to get anything out of the house. Besides, I'll probably need that first week to get the place cleaned up, painted, water softener installed, etc...

I guess my current hosts may want me to move out on the 29th or at least get my stuff out by the 30th on Saturday. I need maybe a half dozen people to help me move, so give me an idea when you are best available to help. I'll either rent a truck for friday/saturday the 29th/30th or May 6th/7th.

We are on unlimited data by Sprint. We live in the middle of no where. We purchased an antenna for Sprint/Verizon (same signal), mounted it high and we now have a solid signal. That signal is then broadcast within the house so it's wireless to any Sprint/Verizon cell.

We use a Palm WebOS phone that then connects to Sprint's 3G data, and our computers connect to the phone to access the Internet. Bottom line is we pay $120 for 3 phones with unlimited data/text and 1,500 minutes of anytime talk, with free mobile to any mobile phone. We always have extra minutes. No data charges - ever. And we have data available via "hotspots" whenever we are on the road as well.

Data speed is about 1.2 down and .4 up.

What's not to like!?

Oh well, I was hoping someone might be able to answer tortdog's question. The formatting scenarios for forum owners still leaves me mostly confused. I've been playing around to see if something or another triggers the formatting you've got here. Maybe I'll ask AbleMinds sysops for help. They've been extraordinarily responsive in the days since establishing The Flight Deck. They've even added a secured YouTube embed feature that I asked for and didn't really expect to see for months. They did it in hours!
