Question to the group: Is it better to show the many years of experience that you have on your resume or try and tone it down so you don't show your age?
I believe that age has become an asset in the eyes of many employers - if we have demonstrated a good work ethic in our past experiences, we are not likely to have changed, and will probably work just as hard in any new job.
My brother is 67 and still in big demand in his field.
I think if you show them, on paper, that you not only have the experience but find some way to indicate that you are an effective worker, they are not so likely to be looking at age.
And, as OT said, you have many years until typical retirement age. Since most people don't stay with a company for 10 or 20 years anyway, being in one's late 30s to late 50s is probably not going to deter an employer from making an offer to a solid candidate.
Thanks you two. I ask because I seen this story on the news where it's actually hurting people land jobs if they're over 40. I know it's discrimination but it happens before one even can get an interview. I was thinking on leaving off the last job on my resume even though it adds to my years of overall experience. Just not sure where the fine line is. Does it really matter that I have 26 years experience vs 20? I'm thinking the extra 6 years in this case just adds to my age more than anything it might add to my experience. I already dropped two other earlier jobs to save space and age issues. On the federal application assessment sheets they only have the choices for experience in the certain related requirements for the position for A)0-3 years B)3-5 years C)5-10 years and D) >10 years experience. So it really didn't even matter how much more than 10 years as long as it was over 10. Just thinking out loud since they say the job numbers are getting better and I'm not seeing it from my end. Next they're gonna say the housing crises is fixed too. Ha!
Btw, when my account expired I was not able to even view the cooler crew folder. Not sure if we already covered this but it doesn't appear that any lurker can log on without paying.
That's why I'm using the federal application/resume builder as a benchmark where they use years/months in a job vs the actual dates. I haven't worked since January of last year and the economy and unemployment rate aside I know that employers don't like gaps even though here are tons of us out there that have them.
Here's the link to Larry's Loon Cam located on a lake west of Wyoming, MN. It is great fun to watch, however two years ago after two of the tiny chicks tumbled into the water for a swim, only one returned. :frown: Last summer neither of the eggs hatched. :frown: Maybe it wasn't so much fun after all. I'm hoping for better results this summer.
You can access the loon cam at the top of this blog page.
the only problem with that is that at some point you're gonna have to put down actual dates somewhere. on the bright side, you don't have to do that until after they've seen your resume and have some interest in you.
I've got an interview tomorrow and one in a couple of weeks, the one tomorrow is the job and company that are #1 on my list. We'll see what unfolds as I would have to get through 4 interviews to get it, but they hire over 50% of the people they interview (getting through their initial recruiter screening is the tough part) and they are the IT consulting leaders so it is where everyone wants to work. We'll see...
I don't see why age discrimination is really an issue anymore with companies. A lot of places have so much turnover on employees that if you're in the same job for more than 5 years that's pretty rare. It's not like back in the 50s and 60s where you got into a company and worked there for 40+ years and then retire. I'd say go with as much experience as you think the job you're looking at needs.
Thanks gentleman. I'm just looking at it from my own standpoint where I'm the hiring manager. I want someone who can physically perform the job if needed to do so. Wondering if 25 years experience at 45 years old is actually better than 15 years experience at 35 years old. And you're right ares, it's all about getting in the door. Appreciate the input everyone. It's very reassuring.
Hey...west of Wyoming... that is where I grew up and where my parents still live. Must be either Linwood, Martin, or Coon Lake. I currently live a mile south of Wyoming.

and say i can't get them any money because all my money is tied up in that 2.5mm deal. they can just skim their cut off the top of what they send me in visa cards.
Spent four hours in St. Joe's ER this morning. Last night I started feeling achy in my neck and down through my chest. It was late so I took a bath, chewed down two baby aspirin, unlocked my front door and took my phone to bed with me so I could call 911 if I needed to and they could get in. Woke up feeling the same and feeling clammy.
So when my daughter came to drop off her baby this morning, I told her I was feeling punk and she drove me to St. Joe's. Had the EEG, X-ray, blood work and all was good. Heck, my blood pressure was around 110/65 the whole time I was there.
They determined I must have pulled some muscles raking this weekend. I felt pretty stupid because this is the second time in five years I've gone in thinking I was having a heart attack and both times I wasn't. They told me I did the right thing. So I guess you'll all have to put up with me for a while more.
glad to hear its ok ot. from what i remember from first aid/cpr, if the pain lasts more than 10 minutes and doesn't change when ou move around, that's the point when you're supposed to go in.
sue has been getting yelled at from her doc. overexerting herself five weeks after the hysterectomy and a little bit of spotting. he gave her orders today that she is not to pick anything up.
so she promptly violated his orders and picked up pedro.
Question to the crew: Have any of you had problems using a MasterCard anywhere? My bank (Bremer) just changed from Visa to MasterCard for the first time ever.
I do like how it's rather appropriate for me being my card - Master's Card bwahh :pbpt:
My bank did the same thing, CM. I liked Visa and the fact that I could use the Wells Fargo ATM right down the hill with no charge. Now I go to Key Bank which is close, but takes forever to get cash because they ask too darn many questions! I could hit three buttons at WF and get quick cash. Now I swear I hit six before I get my card back and the receipt doesn't tell me my balance. To do that I'd have to go back in and hit four more buttons. But anyway, I sure do sound cranky, don't I?
You sound like George Jetson when he had added responsibility from his boss where he had to push one more button for his job. Now he has to push two! How dare they. Don't they have OSHA in the future?
Glad to see this question.....We've recently added a Mastercard debit card, and just wondered if every place that takes visa automatically takes MC too. Don't expect I'll be using it all that much, but it's nice to know these things - just in case.
Mastercard and Visa are almost always taken. It's Discover, American Express and others that aren't taken all the places that Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
Hope your birthday day was the best it could be Mom. The weather sure was gorgeous.
I understand completely, OT! It seemed, it used to be just a couple button pushes. Now I have to listen to the ATM lady talk to me with a British accent, while visually choosing between 2 or 3 languages.... before I can even tell the machine I just want some $$!
