Needing cooler crew help...

Speeds are just like DSL. When I bought a new phone the guy asked me what kind of internet service I had. When I told m=him DSL, he said I might as well just get 3g, since it's the same speed.

The forum set up as it is here is the default when you set up your forum. You can tweak things in the settings from this point.

He's trying to figure out how to use the left frame to link to the various forum roots:

That is VERY nice. But Duckboy can't figure out how to modify the settings to allow for that.

And the "Read New" in the left frame as well. That's a lot easier to use and read discussions.

To the best of my knowledge, that left frame is the default. Tim, the sysop could probably help. Well, actually, I know he could help. Mark and Tim are very responsive and helpful here.

Try having him ask the question in the following folder. Tim reads through those and answers questions regularly. Able Minds Forum>Discussions About The Able Minds Forum Site>Support Discussions>How do I?

He could also send a private message to timvasi.

The problem with using 3G (or 4G) as your home internet is that all the carriers will throttle your bandwidth if you use over a certain amount of data per month. With most carriers it's 2GB, T-Mobile was 5GB when I got my phone (which I tether to my laptop sometimes), now I see on their website that they have also dropped it to 2GB. So unlimited isn't truly unlimited. If you're just browsing the web you should be fine, but stream a few movies and you will bump up against the limit very quickly. I have never been throttled, but I've read that the throttled speed is sub-dialup, so basically unusable.

Going to move my stuff out of my relative's place this weekend, but all I have there for furniture is a cheap bed and my Dad and uncle can easily help me with that.

Next weekend - May 7th - I plan on getting a U-Haul to move the heavy furniture out of storage and could use a few able-bodied people to help. The storage unit is the size of half a garage, and hopefully a lot of the small stuff will already be removed so getting the big stuff should go quick. Got the propane grill and will fire up anything that will fit on it,. so give me an idea if you are hungry and want to help. Thanks in advance.

I need confirmation of any bodies willing to help me move. Everybody is waffling right now - even my brother. The only confirmed helpers as of this morning are my parents.

Can someone here help me with selling stuff on Ebay? I know I've seen y'all talk about stuff you sold, etc....just don't remember details (like who!), or I'd ask directly.

I am NOT Ebay savvy.

I've purchased a few things there, but that's it. Never sold. Don't know how.

How does it work? What are the rules? Do the fees they charge make it worthwhile (suppose it depends on the item?)? What about sales tax - do you collect/remit?

Can't remember all the things that have crossed my mind as I've been thinking about this.

As most of you know, my mom passed away last October. The house she lived in is FULL of stuff. They moved in in 1956, and I don't know that *anything* has been thrown away since. There's a lot of crap. And a lot of stuff that's not quite crap -- as in, I'd feel guilty throwing it away (being raised by children of the depression dontcha know), and it's really too good for goodwill, and I'm no where NEAR organized enough to think about an Estate sale.

So I thought, as I'm sorting and purging....I could take some of these items and sell them one at a time on Ebay. But I don't have any idea on how to start. *anyone*??

Estate Sales can be commissioned out to a company that will handle it for you. I think they charge about 25%.
Thu, 05/19/2011 - 12:53 AM Permalink
'mom'

That's just it -- I *still* have to go through everything one room at a time, to weed out the stuff that I'd be interested in selling. If I knew what I was doing, and could at least try to sell some of it while I'm sorting, I think I'd be ahead.

The fees ebay charges are roughly 9% of the selling price, and you get the first 50 items each month listed with no listing fee. ebay will invoice you monthly, or you can make direct payments out of your paypal account as you receive payment for the items (which is what i usually do). just take good pictures and describe the items accurately, and be fair and realistic about shipping charges.

paypal also charges to process payments, 30 cents plus 2.9-3.9% of the payment amount. as for sales tax, i registered to collect it, because we were buying things retail and reselling them, which makes it exempt, but most of the time ebay is no different than a garage sale provided you're not making a business out of it (which i don't think would be the case here even if it is a lot of items).

Oh Mom. I"m so sorry to hear about your mom and the estate. My mom is sick right now, and is - to be totally honest, a horder. I've taken 17 trips to goodwill just out of the living room/hall way and 5 trips to the dump.

My advice is to make a pile of the 'nicer' stuff, and get through everything else. Craiglist is also an awesome way to unload stuff.

As for goodwill, the tax writeoff still makes it worth it, and today some really nice things wind up there. Another option is, if there is a hospice or cancer discovery store in your area - they take higher end items, and the money goes to help fund cancer research and hospice.

Or you can try a consignment store.

Actually, I am meeting with some ladies that run a "boutique" - not consignment, but I'll see what they think stuff is worth that they're interested in. They, for now anyway, are just coming to look at hats and purses (which she easily has 50 or more of both), and costume jewelry.

I don't want to offend the nice ladies who are taking the time to come by and look, but I might want to "think about it", if what they offer seems too low. I don't know much about "vintage" stuff, and plan to get at least a couple "bids" before being taken for a ride. I'm not out to make a ton of dough or anything, but I'd really hate to "donate" or let something go really cheap, and later find out it was worth some bux.

Goodwill is great, but it makes me nervous claiming a lot of donated stuff on my taxes. We had quite a bit last year, and I kept really good records, but still....just makes me nervous. I actually scrolled back through a year's-worth of text messages, because I KNEW Dad had sent one from one of our first trips. It read

70 bags of clothing

7 kids toys

4 bikes

and im pooped

including a picture of the big trailer overflowing....just made me feel better to have along with my lists/excel sheets and goodwill receipts.

Thanks Mom.

I took photos of my good will runs, with the date and time stamped in the corner of the camera, along with all the dump runs... I did this in part if someone questioned all the crap I was throwing away but figured should the tax people ever wonder...

Botique people are awesome, but just like consignment, remember they have to make a buck off it as well. A note on that - Costume jewerly is HUGE right now. Really coming back into fashion, and the vintage (anything over 20 years) is big big big.

Etsy, allows you to sell vintage items on their sight as well.

I JUST discovered Etsy. I'd known about it a few years back, but totally forgot about it til last night.

The ladies were here today. I probably did get taken on many vintage hats and purses I let go for a couple hundred dollars for the lot. Having second thoughts now, and I'm sure it's totally against etiquette to go begging for my stuff back.

And then I would have to be patient -- take pictures of each thing and price it, and WAIT (I'm not much good at waiting - for anything).

The jewelry lady offered only $100 for a TON of stuff AND several really cool depression-era coin purses. Those I'd done a little research on, and I've seen similar Whiting and Davis coin bags on Ebay and Etsy for upwards of $200 *each*.

I thought about just letting the jewelry alone go for the $100, but then got to thinking that maybe I should go through it a bit more, just to make sure there wasn't some special piece in there....even something maybe not worth a lot, but might be sentimental....So no deal with her, I don't think she likes me anymore now.

Yeah...like the antique dealer who wanted to take an Eastlake 3 piece bedroom set in mint condition on my hands for $100. The marble tops weren't even chipped......he didn't like me wither....I waited a bit and contacted some other dealers and got 700+ for it.

The sump pump for our drain tile system kicked it about 2 weeks ago and we delayed replacing it (lack of time)and we have a back up drainage into the other sump system. Well it must not have drained it fast enough because the water levels have increase to the point where water is seeping in though the floor getting our carpeting all wet. (you wouldn't believe how fast it happened-less than 6 hrs) We have a finished basement with a rec room and bedroom and are hoping to save the carpeting with out jeapordizing future mold issues.

We are planning on spending the weekend shopvaccing the hell out of it, but are wondering if we should have a professional carpent cleaning business come in Monday and see what they can do to save the carpet. Anybody have this problem before and know the best way to go about it?

We have lived here 5 years and never had this problem before, in fact I don't recall hearing that sump ever kick on before this year. Before it died it was kicking on 5-8 times a day.

If you want to save it, I would certainly call at least a professional carpet cleaning outfit. Maybe contact ServicePro or one of those outfits that clean up after flooding. You would have to weigh the cost of that work to the cost of replacing carpeting and pad.

Good luck with all that. This has certainly been a different weather pattern this year. I'm just glad not to be living in Minot, ND about now.

I'm coming to the conclusion that we are going to have to get rid of the carpet. Just trying to figure out the best way to suck up the water, our shop vac is powerful 6hp but it has starting shooting water out top air vent.

Oh and our dehumidifier crapped out and I had to buy a new one today. What next?

Sorry about your problems. We had a leaking pipe about a year ago that caused probs...it was covered by insurance, though, but all the carpet had to be replaced. The floor (cement) was treated with a mold preventative before new carpet was installed. They, professional restorers, said if the carpet is wet more than about 24 hours it is a goner.

Sorry Tates. I'm with you. I hate hearing that thing turn on. It never did the entire first 5 years we lived here. Now it's at least 5 times a night during rain. It did go down since I attached a hose to the spigot so it could drain away from the house. It's helped quite a bit. I guess the water it would pump out would just go right back in to the holding barrel

I'm surprised Ares didn't chime in.

EBay isn't like it used to be. It's more strict, cost more - almost doesnt make it worth while. Depends on the items.

Did you find someone to help with this?

I sold on EBay for years (myself and others) and know pretty well what may sell or be wanted by others.

I don't mind taking a look and giving you a better idea if you want. Just let me know and I could swing by after work one day to give you a better idea.

To start: piles or areas - what won't sell / what will sell / what may sell

What is nice about EBay is there are people out there who collect the oddest things and what EBay was originally about. You are giving up treasures that others will continue to treasure and you make a profit. It has become commercialized with businesses selling sunglasses and clothing lines and perfume. But there still are diamonds in the rough out there.

Like the antiques road show, there was also a thing at the fairgrounds this past weekend -- Anitquarian book show and sale. I would have brought in some to be appraised, but there was a limit of only 3 books, and time was not on my side.

That's a pretty big window, but ProLine is Pella's low end model. The better constructed model is called Architectural series.

There's a lot they aren't telling you about that window: What is the depth, is it oak or prefinished white, and what is the exterior color? Screen included?
