That's right, they were demolishing part of that bridge, then the other part caught on fire.. Did they ever fix it up like they wanted to?

Yeah. The Dakota county side is supposed to open this week.

I grew up on the Dakota Co Side on that bridge in the old village of IG. I donated some pictures of it to the county historical society when it was newly built. I have some wonderful memories of living there....long befor it became IGH. MY grandfather was yard master at the Rock Island yards. My great Uncle drove a horse and buggy off the open bridge...the horse survived. My uncle is buried in the Newport cemetery.

That's cool Donna. Are those pictures up on some site yet? I'd love to see them as I grew up around there as well.

The new part looks pretty nice. They moved fast on getting that fixed up before the feds would yank the $. It'll be a nice addition to the big river trail.

I gave them to the HIstorical Society in So.St. Paul. The Fred Lawshe building I think. Don't know what they did with them.

I was probably one of the last people to cross that bridge with a car. I think it was a Saturday or Sunday evening, and the toll booth was only open until 9:00 or something like that and made it thru at about 8:45. I heard it was closed to traffic mid-week, and I don't think it ever re-opened again to cars.

My grandparents lived in Newport, on the river...not far from Tinucci's. My parents were fit to be tied when I called them from Grandpas house to tell them where I was. Had to ride my bike across the bridge to get there. Do you remember the bridge tender was Art Goddart?? I lived across the street from him.

Did you know Alice Peterson from Newport? Can't recall her husband. One of her boys was on the Newport PD.

No, that was many years ago.... I knew Emil Knack, and Mrs Sathra and her son Ralph. One of the tunicci's bought my grandfathers house, and it burned down....they rebuilt on the property. Can't remember his first name. Mazars lived very close...

I can't remember just where I read about someone seeing the B-17 flying in the TC area recently. I heard on the news that it crashed somewhere near Chicago a few days ago. They mentioned that it had been in the TC shortly before the incident.

This years IGH Middle school yearbook. Lifetouch has dropped the ball a few times on this one. In addition to receiving the track team photo instead of Ali's softball team photo they made a few other mistakes. Like scheduling picture day the same as jammie day. (um maybe a reschedule was in order). Ali was placed in there with her twin :eyeroll: And the crop of a kid giving the peace sign generated a schoolwide letter home apologizing for the oversight. Quality stuff right there. A bit funny either way.

From someone who does this...

This would not be Lifetouch.. it would be whomever in your school puts it together..

The PTA sponsors the yearbook for my kids elementary school and I am the parent volunteer that designs the book. All Lifetouch does is upload ALL the school portrait photos they shot and then it's up to me to select the photos and place in the book, double checking the names are spelled correctly, students are place in the correct class, group shots are all labeled correctly, etc... etc... etc... and the photo of the finger - that would have been a shot taken by the school or by a parent and uploaded.

Then Lifetouch prints the book and ships it.

So looks like blame needs to be directed to the school or parents! :pbpt:

So you don't think the Lifetouch photographer noticed the jammies? That was only one page of many group shots where everyone was wearing jammies. It's quite comical actually. Very colorful section of the book.

I was on the yearbook staff for many years so I do know what we can and can't do. The finger thing is something we would have done on purpose had we known of such genius. We only placed ourselves in many clubs that we weren't part of because we were the group photographers as well.

But Lifetouch did send us the wrong team photo (new one on its way) and they were told to delete the first picture there on the spot (I was there when both were taken) No idea about the spelling issue. V & U are close anyway. They're honest mistakes that aren't big deals at all. Just a bit funny is all.

Yes, I knew Joanie. I lived about a block south of them, right up the hill from the C&H (regardless of what you hear, that stood for Charlotte and Harvey, the founders of the place) Diner. Also knew Jim. He was my sister's bud, they were younger than I. And didn't Al marry Katherine Kenney (?) I am not sure about that one... I've been away a long time, and my memory is getting bad.

We still go to the Choke & Heave during Lent for the fish fry. It's called The Last Track now. Is Al called Junior? I'm not sure who he married. My husband and I are Jim's son Peter's Godparents.

No, I'm thinking it was Al Sr. after his first wife died.

How about the Ries's? Their dad had a filling station on the corner. They lived near Kamish's.

I meant Sonny, not Junior. The father and his new wife moved up to their place in Wyoming, MN. Joan and her husband (Dewey, Huey?) bought and moved the big house her father built across from the business. Jim was a really good friend of my husband Ted's. He and his first wife Sue are also Godparents to our second son. Jim's married to #4 now. This one seems to have taken.

I knew Marilyn Ries. She was a couple of grades ahead of me in school.

Just had dinner there last night. We liked the contrast of the small train that cruises around the top of the place going over a window that overlooked a large train passing outside. Unusually quiet for a huge train right out their back door. The small scale one made more noise than the big boy.

Food was good and cheap as it has always been over the years.

I haven't been there for years and years. There was a guy with a Polish name that owned it for a while too, can't remember what it was though.

OT, "Cooler Crew Pictures" #10022, 16 Jun 2011 8:50 am

I can't remember who the new wife was, although it was someone I knew...I knew Rich and Ron Ries...I was class of '53 (SSP) and I think they were just behind me.

I've just been back in touch with Jim Tatro in the past year. Lots of old memories there. He was also my sister's (Susan Truax) age. He gave us a book on Inver Grove School that had a lot of interesting stuff in it. Even had my grandmother's name as president of The PTA.

Hwy 70/35 in Siren the morning of June 18 2001. The Tornado was on the ground for 40 miles. The 3 deaths were in Dewy township, where I live...10 miles east of Siren. That Dairy Queen had just had the grand opening...brand new building. It had been picked up and set down again by the twister. Had to be torn down and rebuilt. The staff and customers rode it out in the walk in freezer. They kept the freezer and still use it.

Our garage

Photobucket

Very minimal damage. WE were on the vary edge of it.

Today there are recovery celebrations going on all day in Siren.

Donna, I remember Buzz driving us through all the destruction after that. Mother Nature has a way of keeping us humble. We can fight and win most anything but when Mother Nature decides to throw a tizzy, we realize how small and vulnerable we are.

You are so right, Terry!! It is amazing how all that destruction is recovering. The area along Williams Rd that looked like a logging crew had bee through and clear cut it, has begun to grow up high enough to almost look like a forest again.

I read about it from a Book I just got called Fantasy Workshop Mastering Digital Painting Techniques lots of good ideas to play with in it.

the new one all I did was take illustrator rendering into photoshop take the photo I used as a reference and cut the face and hair out place it over the already illustrated image as an overlay set it to 70% transparency and line it up, gave it a nice blended look and a good texture for the hair I think.

only thing you have to worry about there is that you have created a derived work by using the original photo for copyright purposes, although working from a photo originally you may have a derived work as well. just things to watch out for if you're planning on selling the pieces, particularly with celebrities.

Mad_Dach5und

Just add Mickey Mouse ears - Disney NNNNNNNNEVER has problems with derived work. :eyeroll:

(Please note the sarcasm - or you'll get sued)

I always think of a line the comedian Sinbad used to say about old family driving - "PUT THE BABY IN THE WINDOW." He was talking about sticking the kid in the trunk of the huge Vista Cruiser station wagon with that huge bubble window out back. That way they can see outside.

- But if the sun hit the glass just right, the kid would burst into flames.

We had a baby blue Ford Fairmont station wagon - fold down the back seat in that one, and three boys could play basketball in the cargo space.
