Downtown Dave

I used to point out that night digging was waste of time . I have been silenced the past few years. Long live insomnia

We are having some remodeling done here. The rough ins are about done. Then the inspections and then the cooler stuff starts being installed. I am hoping for a quiet week next week and then the new cabinets, electric finishing, floors, backsplash and all fun stuff will likely be happening between the 28th and completion in a week or two.

Last year I put in for two weeks vacation to use as I wish and it was approved. Of course there is a minor crisis going on at work that is in my of my programs so my "as I wish" is turning into "when I can". I am hopeful this whole thing is mostly resolved the next week - the earlier the better.

I agree with you about night digging except the last 3 clues or so, at that point in the hunt it is almost mandatory.

It might only be the treasure of the Knights Templar, no biggie.

or pirate treasure, or a ruse... Seems pretty elaborate to evade people for that long. I certainly find it intriguing anyway.

I watched something on the history channel about that... FASCINATING. The engineering involved for the time was unbelievable... like you said too much work and effort for it to be a ruse. Didn't the last booby trap cause the whole thing to flood?

Maybe it's One-eyed Willy's treasure... GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!

KC0GRN

What they didn't cover in the history channel was the flood tunnels constructed to flood the pit when you dig deep enough. Far more elaborate than needed. That tunnel group rules out the possibility that someone was just covering up a sinkhole.

Another theory was it was constructed as a way to keep the British "occupied" searching for treasure during the revolutionary war. But that obviously never happened, so... probably not the real reason either.

I do find it interesting that someone (or some group) would cover something up so well that it would be nearly impossible to retrieve it again. For as many years that people have been trying to find a way to get to it, if there was a "backdoor" to gain access, someone would have stumbled across it. So whatever they buried, they never intended to get back. Very interesting indeed.

I've watched that too...fascinating, but it doesn't make me want to get a shovel and dig...just sayin...

KC0GRN

Oh me either really. If that's all it took, someone would have found it by now.

No... something else needs to be done there first before you can dig anything out.

Tatergirl

I don't recall if it was just a theory or what... but didn't they think the back door was an underground river/water way that led from the ocean to the bottom of the shaft? Not sure if divers have tried to access it.

I don't remember... but many groups have gone broke trying solve the mystery. It's quite remarkable the modern day technology hasn't solved this yet.

Why cannot someone just bring some big rigs, dozers, and diggers out there? instead of a deep skinny hole just dig a wide sloped deep hole. Like an excavation for diamonds.

KC0GRN

It's a question of risk vs. reward.

You probably won't/can't find investors to pay the amounts of money it would take to excavate the entire area when you don't know what they payoff will be. But yes, if you threw enough money at the problem, you could solve it.

There was one other theory I read that it might end up being an old ammunitions dump built by the french before the revolutionary war. Although, I really doubt they'd make an ammo dump so elaborate. But, it's one of a few theories that would result in a ton of money wasted to find nothing of intrinsic value.

Seriously though, there are people out there with more money than they know what to do with you'd think that at least one person by now would be like that's really cool I'm going to go use my millions and dig this up.
Mon, 01/21/2013 - 2:11 AM Permalink
KC0GRN

Yeah.. it's been done a couple times by such people.

What I really find odd about it is the fact it must have taken a decent group of people to bury whatever it was, and there isn't as much as a hint given anywhere else alluding to it. Unless everyone involved just suddenly died, you'd think one of them might have spilled the beans at some point. That or they really didn't want anyone to ever dig it up....

If it has been so hard to uncover than how did they bury it in the first place? Aliens!!!!

I do like the theories about the holy grail... or secret treasure from the knights templar.

There are other man made structures (old world-european design)throughout North America that pre-date the earliest explorers arriving here. Interesting stuff.

Lots of people have mentioned during the time of the hunt that boards were slow. I believe some of that is facebook, but I prefer this form of discussion better.

Let's start shooting the breeze here and keep in touch better this coming year.

Glad for that, Eags.

The other thing that bugs me about facebook is that things can be shared out so readily that I am less inclined to share some stuff. At least here we know that what we share is a bit more protected. I don't know that protected is the right word, but I am often surprised what people post on facebook and then gets shared all over the place.

One of the things I love about able minds is that once you get it set up, it brings you in where you left off. And you read forward, instead of backward like Facebook. When I start looking at posted Facebook and I'm scrolling down the next thing I know Facebook has refreshed and I am back up at the top. On Facebook if I click on a post to comment or see more information, when I try to go back to where I was often times then it will take me to the top as well. I do like Facebook for reuniting lost dogs with their families and for seeing photos of my nieces' and nephews' lids and my friends kids and grandkids.

Facebook works well for us to connect with Brenda. I find out all sorts of things she is up to because of FB that I wouldn't know otherwise.

But for following conversations, this is a much easier in my opinion.

I am going to post here and ask that people vote once a day until the 15th of February.

The Wilder Foundation is getting new software and this is a chance to win some money off the cost and that money would then go to Wilder programs. Wilder programs include a child development center, children's mental health programs including Day Treatment, Child Guidance Center, Kofi Services, SE Asian families and case management. There are also services for adults needing mental health services, social healing for recent immigrants, the Center for Aging that has Adult Day Health, Meals on Wheels, Memory Loss, and Care Giver services to help support those that do the care giving for members of their family.

Vote for Wilder

Remember you can vote one time per day. The video is the one that shows the Wilder Center with the large "W" on the sign. You don't need to watch the video each time you vote.

Thanks much!

Tomorrow is my back to reality day.

Thanks to everyone who made today so special. 16 years of rehashing the hunt. Hard to believe so much time has passed. I still remember standing out at Chair-o-key with people I only knew of on a forum that were to become friends for life. Each year brings new folks and new people to connect with only because we hunt pucks in the parks in the middle of winter.

$10,000 is nothing to sneeze at, but the friendships and connections that wouldn't happen any other way is the greater prize.

Terry, I'd be happy to vote every day. Wilder helped me and my family so much when my kids were growing up.

Would you mind posting that link each day, as a reminder (if you get a chance)?

Thanks!

I will try to remember to do that Eags. I put the link on my links bar and just seeing it reminds me to go vote each day.

The only thing that is a tad bit nutzo is they count the day (1 vote a day) to 24 hours. So if I vote at 8 one evening, I can't vote at 7 the next evening.

But it is worth it. That's a bunch of dollars that could do into program needs.

I best get between the sheets. Early rise tomorrow so I'm out of here by the time the contractors start parking in the driveway.

I keep telling myself all this will be over sometime and the prize at the end will be well worth it. But it's now been a month and getting a bit old.

Goodnight and SCDs!

For those that are not on the Facebook board, here is the info I promised. Curtis Kopp (AKA Riddlin) will be performing live stand up comedy at Champs in New Richmond at approx. 7pm. The cost of $10per person and there will be drink specials, possibly food specials. There are 3 other comedians performing and its sure to be a great time. I will be bringing chocolates and reserving tables for those that book ahead of time. So come on out and have a great show for an afforadable price. New richmond is approx. 40 from downtown St. Paul.

During the Medallion Hunt it was often mentioned how quiet the message boards seemed this year. Not just the Cooler, but the PP boards and others as well. We suspected it might be related to Facebook, but some people said that wasn't overly busy either. I heard a new theory today. It was talking about how touch screen devices are changing the internet. As more and more people access the internet vie their cell phones and tablets instead of full-fledged desktops and laptops, they become less likely to post things. The keyboards on these devices just aren't as conducive to typing as a real keyboard and so people are becoming consumers of internet content rather than producers of it. I think there may be something to that. The timing seems about right.

Sure makes sense to me. In all the time that I have had problems with my home computers and have had to rely solely on my phone, I find that I read posts but not as often do I post anymore.
