I think so. There's for sure Water St that goes through both. I'm about 90% sure there was also a trail between Water and the Water going from Harriet to Lilydale
I'd like to congratulate myself on my 400th post. It's been a long, difficult journey, but I've finally reached heights I won't see again until I post my 401st post. Thank you in advance for all the drinks you buy me tonight at Gabes in celebration of this epic milestone.
I saw some hunters at Chair-o-key yesterday. They were heading for the (bluff-side of the street) trail that starts at Annapolis and Cherokee. I paused long enough to notice that the sign there says "Bruce Vento View". Might come in handy to know that some day.
honestly, I'm a tad bit scared...ok a lot scared...In the woods last night with Nimrod...getting accumulated, first I heard a snarly animal sound. Second the path next to the cliff was so narrow and icy, I fell again. ( didn't see the ice) Nimrod said I don't even know how to tell anyone where we are. I had to crawl back up off the path grabbing trees with assistance form Nimrod.
Anyone see the Plans for the new park called Island Station? It's part of the 17 mile restoration of the Mississippi. That would be a new twist, giving us landmarks that are to come..That would be foreseeing!
No, at least, I didn't find a way. The marina stops you or rather the waterway access to it. You can walk along the trail close to the road, of course.
Coyotes are around more than you would think. We live near 50th and France in Edina and there have been coyotes sighted outside our apartment building.
I can try to explain why I wonder later, but does anyone know what parts of the Capitol area are officially Capitol Grounds? There are a number of spaces we'd like to check out (women's suffrage memorial garden on MLK JR pkwy at cedar is one). Mapquest only shows the "block" with the Capitol and the"apron" to the south up to MLK as "Capitol Grounds"
If I remember correctly, it was once stated it would never be on Capitol grounds or the State Fair Grounds again. I just have never put them back in the mix as a place to consider.
we live out by afton and man, in the summer some nights its pretty scary sounding. They will be howling and roaming our area. I used to be afraid for our old dog because we knew if it was a pack, you were in trouble. I have yet to capture a photo though of them in our yard even though I have seen them.
Now I am too scared to go to Crosby at night, lol thanks guys :pbpt:
The boards are not as active anywhere as in past years. I have been trying to figure out for myself what the deal is with hunting. I LOVE the hunt. Finally I can put my finger on it. Usually the hunt can be narrowed down to a few parks by clue 5. By 6 your confirmed where..then it usually takes another 4 days to find it. We are on clue 8 and there really are good arguments for 3 if not 4 parks. Yes, Harriett does seem to be it, but I do not believe it. I'm still waiting for my clue to confirm Lilydale. I do not trust this CW that she ( Guessing a woman because I can't imagine a Man calling his outdoor gear silly frills) will not lead us to one more final destination. If the idea is to keep seasoned hunters at bay to even the playing field she did a good job. With that said "others" don't take vacations to run all over town, do no housework, lose sleep, eat, shower and breathe the clues. I really don't see much excitement in anyone's eyes out there in the parks. If you CW are reading this you need to know it is back breaking work to hunt for the puck. Scramble us to a few parks yes, this seems to be almost cruel. I am speaking for myself and not my Son's that hunt. My first hunt was in 1967 and if next year is like this year I'm going to hang up my Hunting tools. My family is now in the third generation of hunting with a forth coming up the ranks soon. In all these years this year will go down in my history as my worst hunt ever. Had to get this off my chest. Enough said. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :lipsealed:
Brasscat, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I feel like the hunt has changed over the years. I do miss the days when we knew what park it was in sooner. It seems that now they just want to put the med in some deep wooded area that is hard to get to, especially for kids or older folks. Then it's really just a "needle in a haystack" kind of thing.
Compare for example two hunts at Como. In 97, the clues slowly narrowed down the area in the park, until we knew it was somewhere in a visual line from point A to point B. We dug and dug in deep snow, and it was fun!
Then there was Como's Blair Witch hunt. It was in a tangle of woods and brush, and it was like a mad dash, and it was hard to avoid getting poked in the eye by branches. Makes for crazy memories, but not very fun hunting IMHO.
Seems like since that hunt, it's often been in a deeply wooded area that's hard to get to. I miss the days of slowly narrowing things down with the clues over time.
I'm with you. I still feel lost about the park and that is unusual. I have my suspicions, but not happy with any of them.
I've always liked this forum. I don't go to gatherings or feel confident in saying "hey" when I notice hunters who I think are from here but have always shared any of my noodles and have been happy with how open people are with theirs.
This year I'm working 2 jobs and working at getting my dad home after an extended nursing home stay so haven't been on much, so not around much. It seemed so quite when I checked in on Thursday, I was reluctant to pay my renewal, glad people are still here though.
This hunt has felt to me to resemble something closer to what hunts used to be. If we follow the clues, I believe they are leading us to the west end of Harriet Island. The early clues are what early clues usually are. General park features, probably what it's in, stay off golf courses and usually a nod to the previous hunt. Usually buried in those early clues are things, if when interpreted correctly gives you hint to a feature that perhaps other parks don't have.
The later clues have talked about things seen from or in the park - the old jail, the 1st sign, given us some street names, and now the anchor. The playground(s) was given earlier - clue 3, which eliminated parks without playgrounds for me.
One thing that occurred to me today is no one was raking the levee. The year of the Horton dash, people were raking that whole levee for a few days.
I'm hoping we get confirmation on the general area of the park with tonight's clue.
I have not liked the red herrings as well since I spent 3 days digging in the wrong park although if this winds up being in the middle of an open space at Harriet then the CW has brought the hunt full circle and perhaps we are out of the woods for the foreseeable future.
I sure hope so. The out in the open hunts are much more my style. It takes more creativity in a year with little snow, but it can be and has been done.
Having biked that a million or so times, there is a moment where the trail oes on to the road. But it is for about 500 feet. Don't know if this helps your thought process.
A lot of the space in that area is the private property of the railroad, I do not think it is very promising hunt wise.
It has changed alot over the years. The sad news is, it will never be the way it use to be.. Within minutes of the clue being released, everyone knows the clue....without buying a newspaper. One persons noodle can be an otherpersons gain. What use to be a trip to the library to figure out the history lesson of the clue is now a click away... yes the clues are harder, and I give the CW koodos for the suspence this year, its clue 8 and people still have more then 1 place on their list. But in the end we will as always slap ourselfs on the head, of seeing how easy the clue explination was., and when the next year comes were upset yet again with the CW
Harriet Island is a 'New' Park as about 4 pm today - that blanket of snow basically erases most marks of what was done over the last couple days - not that we could move much product - it's pretty much all ice.
All I know if its at Harriet (which I now am on board thanks to last night and some early morning noodling) I feel like this is the first year I really invested time into the wrong park. Am I losing my hunting touch?? Man, one day you're going to find me with a ripped jacket, dazed look on my face, zombie body walking around in some random SP park!
The only year I was truly, angrily disappointed in the clues was the last Mounds hunt. Obbs = Sports and a lot of the linking in their explains were pretty weak, plus they 'doctored' the 11th clue to prevent a frostbite tragedy. I was OK with shortening the hunt by a day, given the extreme weather - but as a whole the clues really lacked anything clever. Add to it that it was hidden in a spot that had virtually no visible landmarks in the distance.
For ANY modern hunt - Getting 'tunnel' vision for one park early on is NEVER a good thing.
This is year 42 for us hunting together. I can tell you there have been years when our noodling took us to the wrong park, the right park but the wrong area, we have been miles away from where it was found, and have been closer than close.
Even with the internet, clues are still interpreted by each of us for what makes sense to us. It's what keeps us coming back just to see if we can be closer this year.
There are two things that I prize more than anything related to this crazy hunting in the snow; the friendships formed and being in the right park. Finding the medallion - and not putting it back - would be wonderful of course. :pbpt:
I believe Terry you were the first CC person I met (last year out at Tony S.) and it was by default of me forcing my husband to walk alittle bit more down the path before we left!
While I haven't gotten to meet anyone yet in the parks I feel I have formed a nice little bond between here and our CC facebook page with folks that I cherish. To be able to all laugh/complain/get fustrated/excited together and know that there are other folks who get the "love" of the hunt with me is what I enjoy the most. Its exciting to get out in the park and feel like you have a shot (until you see you have 100 acres to find it!) but its still fun.
Times and hunts will change, but we know we will keep coming back each year because its FUN! Besides, what else are we going to do in Jan?
Nimrod, Thank you again !
brasscat - I am glad you weren't hurt.
Coyotes are the main reason there are very few
feral cats.

Or am I just clueless? :goofy:

The fun part begins, because it will be tough to remember which parts were snowless and not worthy of searching and which parts have new snow.
Had to come home and blow the driveway.
