I like that! We were by there just recently but had forgotten about it. Getting these clues to fit elsewhere is giving me fits and a headache.

Maybe it is really Harriet. Or not.

If Crosby and Dale (Lilydale) are the Holiday Pair, well then the Bruce Vento Overlook in Cherokee is right next to those two parks...plus with all the Crosby/Harriet Red Herrings I'm thinking Cherokee's Bruce Vento is the best bet vs. the Mounds Sanctuary.

I know the Vento Scenic Overlook trail used to be closed off in the winter (I used to see a sign on the fence near the entrance) I guess that isn't in effect if people can wander out there.

I'd love to think it was there, it's a cool spot. But you can't see downtown at all, or much else other than a direct view west (nice view of the Minneapolis skyline). Plus it's not technically in Ramsey County, but easily mistaken if someone was thinking of a hiding spot. Also, most of that area is bluffs, unless you hide it at the top. I could NOT imagine a 12th clue rush out there, as I'm pretty sure there would be injuries, if not accidental deaths.

I give up. The hunt is fun when you feel you at least know what park it's in and then are trying to figure out where in the park it is. Only 3 clues left and I'm lost! I wonder if it will even be found this year?

yea I like that too. Good job OT!

Right now I'm considering the overlook as a park feature in Cherokee. Doesn't mean we need to hunt the medallion there.

Clue 1 - common first clue - county, don't dig on golf courses, etc.

Clue 2 - a stair - are there stairs in the overlook area?

Clue 3 - general path clue, park and sit - overlook? There are benches at the overlook on the east side of Smith Ave. - There is a sliding hill as Cherokee that wouldn't be used in summer

Clue 4 - ups and downs could refer to the terrain in the park - and could be the what it's in clue.

Clue 5 - though I had thought this was a clue about the old jail and the flooding of Harriet Island, Lilydale also floods. Fence at the overlook?

Clue 6 - This one I can think of lots of stuff that is not in the KISS method of interpreting clues. There are trees though.

Clue 7 - the Yacht Club is visible below Cherokee. The 1st sign is visible mostly from the eastern side of the park

Clue 8 - Anchors away could be Annapolis. Bruise/Bruce, buns - Baker St. Calling a doctor - Page St.

Since I've only been seriously hunting for about 3 years, when is the last year that the medallion was NOT found?
Mon, 01/28/2013 - 9:15 AM Permalink
mrmnmikey

never. it would be a first if not found

The only close one that I know of was 1984, lots of snow, Newell, there was an early 13th clue released, but the medallion was found just prior to that bonus clue.

Ahh, I see. I think it would be pretty hard for it not be found once they give a clue that says X amount of ft. from such and such a tree, unless it was accidently moved.

Sounds like most people are thinking it's the Sanctuary on the East Side...bummer, haven't even been out there in that part this year! I have to go now to at least say I was close.

okay - unto another bent.

The overlook at Mounds also overlooks the Sanctuary. The fences could be those placed around the mounds several years ago. With the view up the river from the overlook, the Yacht Club, the 1st sign, is visible. I haven't worked through all the clues, but there is another rambling thought.

I forgot to post this last night. The person who called Vento a good man at his memorial was Sen. Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont. Do with that what you will.

"Pawnbrokers have often been associated with fencing" = "But spotting a fence won't lead you wrong.

There is a Best Pawn shop just across the bridge from Bruce Vento Trailhead and Sanctuary.

I'm with those above who are leaning more toward the overlook(s). But, since I can't go look at the area from here and I can't picture the area in my head, I'm not much help.

(Plus, there is ice climbing right below it.)

The Bruce F. Vento Public Service Award is given annually to a public servant who has demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding service, skill, resourcefulness or innovation in the preservation of land, water or historic resources for the legacy of America.

In 2000, National Park Trust established the Bruce F. Vento Public Service Award to honor the memory and legacy of Bruce Vento, a 12-term Member of Congress from Minnesota and former Chair of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands. During his tenure, Congressman Vento passed more park legislation than any other previous chairman. Congressman Vento died on October 10, 2000 at the age of 60.

Each recipient of the Vento Award has expanded the nation's understanding of what it means to have a lifelong legacy and commitment to protecting America's heritage.

Past award recipient, Congressman John Lewis stated in his 2004 address, "Bruce Vento was a good man. He was an environmental stalwart – a Member who stood second to no one when it came to protecting our environment, strengthening our parks, and preserving our national heritage. He was the environmental conscience of the House, and he continues to inspire Members of Congress – and people throughout the country – who are fighting to make our nation a little cleaner and a little greener for our children and generations yet unborn."

So somewhere while I was going through the clues that I thought I had nailed, I found myself singing Poor little lambs that have lost their way, baa, baa, baa.

So, if clue 8 is all the streets. And the first stanza of clue 9 is giving you Vento from the rhymes.

What is the second stanza about?

"Study his path"

and

"he was a good man" (Sen. Leahy of VT)

of course.
Mon, 01/28/2013 - 10:42 AM Permalink

I wonder if it could still be Lilydale? All those streets, if extended, would go through Lilydale as well. But what's with the Vento reference? It seems the overlook is in Ramsey County and it can't be on the Vento Trail.

The obvious is the BV trail - but it could be his life's work - conservation, etc.

Maybe it means the outlook is in the park and don't dig up the nature.

(And, of course, Lilydale, which is down under has ice climbing, which you need a permit for.)
