I drove by the boat ramp this morning. Only one car in the lot.

Congrats!!!! Certainly someone that is deserving!!! I drove by there at lunch, probably right about the time it was being found. Couldn't get out to take a look because of damn work...

I was figuring it would be hidden deep in the woods, far in along a trail. And that it would be a long hunt due to how huge that park is.

wonder if they thought kids sliding down hill would pack it down and ice it in?

Way to go Mappy..... booo for the rest of us.

I'm kind of bummed they didn't hide it far out in the woods somewhere, so we could have a longer hunt.

I took Fri-Mon off work to look for this and now won't get chance (other than the drive by I did Tues night).

Well at least we were on to the right park.

The only reason I considered it a dark horse - so to speak- is that statisically it's hidden "inside the box". It's only been in parks outside of St. Paul proper 13 times.... well now 14. :goofy:

I don't have access to facebook at work and I don't have smartphone...so any details people can share would be greatly appreciated.

Was is found near the sledding hill? Was it in anything (other than ice)?

A Park n Grab? Very near parking, right?

I have planned PTO all next week. Things were looking good today that would actually happen so we could get out to hunt.

I am usually bummed when the hunt ends, but because it was our own Mappy, I am not feeling nearly as bummed.

That seems to be common lately. Throw it out the window.

Too bad, as there are plenty of trails in that park. I was further to the south today by Grass Lake. Great spots to hide a medallion and keep the hunt going to the end.

I am not 100% and wasn't in the right area at the right time, but it is my understanding that it was in a rag and ice. It was on a sloped area leading towards the lake where you could see the volleyball court, a picnic shelter, the beach building and sledding hill.

It was wrapped in a thin linen rag and frozen into about one cup of water. You could see the rag through the clear ice, and could tell it had been frozen in something like a solo cup. About 25 yards off the trail towards the top of the hill. I feel bad for the guy who cleared the tree yesterday and didn't notice it. Today it was lying 3 or 4 feet from the tree where it was probably wedged.

It was lined up with the volleyball court poles, just past a tree that was arching over the trail.

I agree Terry... it does soften the blow knowing Mappy found it. I just wish with a park as big as that that they would've hid it deep enough in the woods to last longer.

All of us just want to feel like we had a chance of turning over the right clump of snow or leaves to find it.

I wish I could take more vacation days to do this but I usually save those for towards the second half of the hunt where my odds are better. I'm disappointed for my family (sis, bro in law, nieces, and hubby) as we were planning on spending the whole weekend out digging together.

Oh well --- there's always the damn cat show. :eyeroll:

Tater - I hope you can get off work early. I'm sure folks will still be there at 11:30 - but we won't.

I've been up since 3:30 this morning. I have to work tomorrow - later start - but still need to be somewhat with it.

it was in a slightly wooded area with lots of leaves. If you were sliding on it and missed the trees, you'd probably have hit the posts in the volleyball court.

Congratulations Steve on a great job and the win! And great job to many of you who were smart enough to see Snail Lake as the spot. I don't know you folks personally as I moved south four years ago, but you all are a neat group. I still love to noodle and try to figure things out and help my daughter who still lives in MN and likes to actually get out and hunt. She actually was thinking it could be sosmewhere in the VH area as she lives up that way, but I had really taken the Highland park bait .

I also wanted to say how nice it is that this forum exists. The Pioneer Press one, with all the negativity, poor sports, trolls and what not is just unfortunate.

Cheers!

I am usually so let down when the medallion has been found each year. I can hardly believe I'm not.

So happy for Steve and his find.

How close was the med to that funny looking tree at the top of the hill, the one with the bulbous-looking trunk that was like a chair shape that looked like you could sit in it?

So did I! ...but remember Tony Schmidt. Huge area combed for days. But all along it was right by the picnic pavilion turned over and 'cast about' but not seen for days.

That's right... it was supposed to be "wedged" ..."We've well secured the treasure." I read the explanations are out ...'spose I should go read them :coolfrown:

But I am happy that the finder was most deserving of it.
