The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.

The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

Desire-to-win

Jake836allen: I'm interested. Where can I get them?

Neonblue- I believe it is polystyrene (plastic) because people used to go out with metal detectors.

In 1957 it was found at BCP. It has as a old workhouse (crack our code) It also has a water tower lots of hills and woods.

M.K.I.A. -Early thoughts were toward Prosperity and Mound Parks. Been to Prosperity, nothing really seemed right. Don't think it's there. Mound apparently has a small playground. Again, doesn't seem to fit in the pattern.

Now that you all got me totally confused! I guess I don't know where to start. My thought was Mounds Park at first too, but now you all are going towards Hidden Falls. I like Greg Sax's theory, process of elimination makes sense to me.

Desire-to-win- YES! I believe we give the author too much credit. Granted the words and clues are chosen carefully and delibertaly. But the author trips us up without even trying, because everone tries to take too much out of some phrases that have no meaning, and the author never had intended to have meaning.

Jake836allen: It was at Battle Creek in 1970 and 1995 as well. I have all the clues/explanations going back to 1952, too. I get the feeling from this group that everyone either has the complete collection of clues, is working on completing their collection, or is just getting started on one. Hopefully, we'll be able to help others dig back into the vaults. The history of the hunt is just as fascinating as the search.

To all of you looking at Battle Creek Park, it was just there three years ago. If you look at the history of the treasure hunt, they usually do not repeat parks that quickly.

on the coffee theory: Arlington fields is adjacent to the Coffee Cup restaurant on Arlington & Rice. It has a great sliding hill and a sports dome! It also (at least in previous years) has had an ice skating rink and warming house. There's no playground though.

Desire to win the carnival office printed a book in 87, they dont have any more copies but my mom is a former queen and got her hands on a copy

Also, I don't think Arlington fields is actually a St. Paul park - it's just baseball fields.

It's wrapped in a MOUNDS candy wrapper ??

Good call RC. I've played ball there many times, and there is not much there. I would be very disappointed if this is where the medalion was found. (lame spot, but always a possibility)

It's probably too soon for them to put it at hidden falls again, too. wasn't it just there in 1993?

Thu, 01/29/1998 - 3:02 PM Permalink
Desire-to-win

It has to be in a park. St. Paul takes care of 5 regional parks and 11 county parks. I'm sure the author doesn't mean a ball park. Again, don't think too much into the clues. In past years, look at the clues and where the medallion was found. What do you find?

Thu, 01/29/1998 - 3:12 PM Permalink
G. Sax

Rice & Arlington is a "Field" not a "Park." The clue-makers seem to care about such trivialities, so I think we should, too. jake: I'd be happy to share 88-94 with you, but I think I may already have (teaser alert: stay tuned). If I'm wrong, I'll catch you after the hunt. (I'm stepping away for a few hours. I'll talk to whoever's here later tonight.)

Ok, I dont know if this has been discussed yet, but, todays clue says City streets. What if it was on a street named after a cit. ie. Duluth(MN) and Case Playground, Lexington(KY) Runs through Como Park, I am not sure, but I think near Highland there is a St.Paul street, Weve already ruled out the ball fields, but they are on Arlington St. Just a thought

Treasure Hunters:

It was last found in Mounds Park in '87. I've scouted many of the sizable St. Paul parks, and I'm convinced that this year it is Mounds. Anyone who has been to Mounds Park knows that the mention of high ground is particularly fitting, as well as the mention of scenery. You might be interested to know that Mounds Blvd. and Mounds St. come together exactly where Mounds Park proper begins.

Don't drop your shovels and run from mounds but the more I think about Mounds the less I like it! Food for thought!

Highland park? "

City streets will also show you the way"

HIGHLAND PKWY., FORD PKWY.

A place to play can make ANY WINTER more pleasurable.

INDOOR STATING ARENAS.

High ground HIGHLAND

Water and woods OBVIOUS

Possibly by the old water tower. m-m-m-m-m-m-

Everyone must still remember that at least one of these clue will be describing what the "med" is in. Also sometimes the clues can be real in depth other times the mean what they say. I dont believe it is in mound but I do think it is in a smaller park this year, why I jut can't say. On the subject of reading way to far into clues, I think the med is in a coffee can because mountain grown is high ground and clue 2 the last 2 years has been about what the med is in. Still think it would be better to sell hot chocolate out there, I would make 4 grand and not be cold!

Hey what exactly did Joe M. say, I wanna Know because I wasn't with him when he talked his stuff or whatever. But anyways, I was just at Cherokee Park, and I thought for sure that it would be by the 'love rock' (lode means rock) but nope. Also, Joe is coming back, and before he does, I just wanna say that I as his friend am sorry for anything he said, even though he couldnt back any of his talk up.

SHARKY

The "demo to mode" clue put the "mo" in front of the "de" and you get "mode" now go back to the "crack the code" line and do the same. You get "deco" and well... you need to refer to somenone else's info posted here earlier. Anyways... I'm off to Mounds. I've looked two years previous and been on top of the medallion both times. Let's hope this year, I find it 'cause it's probably my last -- I'm moving real soon! I am searching alone so if anyone wants to team up, look for the "shark" hat:) Also, a friend told me she believes they don't actually hide the medallion until late in the search... any truth to this? What was the soonest the medallion has ever been found? Happy Hunting:)

Good idea - but I think the author would have referred to the Space needle in a different way - not just a large object. But, who knows? Which park are you thinking?

Itsinmypocket

I think that we shouldnt rule phalen out, or am I wrong?

Mr. Know It All

Justin where are you considering with the space needle thing?

Thu, 01/29/1998 - 3:31 PM Permalink

I can't think of any "large object" near Phalen. But, there are sliding hills. And places to play. And a warming house.

Thu, 01/29/1998 - 3:32 PM Permalink
Itsinmypocket

The large object could be the smokestack visible from many places in Cherokee

Thu, 01/29/1998 - 3:32 PM Permalink

But, you can't see it from Phalen.

The mother of all mother lodes in the city (of money) is under the big number one at the first national bank. This may be another connection to it or just another fluke. Arlington is just baseball fields but it still is a park, but its more of a playground park while they hide it in park parks usally. So are we all agreed its at mounds or not. But the streets and playgound thing might mean its between thestreet and playground at mounds. Hi ya'll havent read it in about a day and suddenly theres 200 more messages. Oy!
