2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

Last year was tough, snow was deep and I was clue-less, he he..

I never nailed it. Felt it would NEVER be Como, but did say very early on, "You know, this place has an east and west pic-a-nic grounds ("Boo-Boo!"). I saw the signs when I drove in tonite."

But never believed for a second that when I said that it was really Como.

I was shocked it was there. Really shocked.

Tim - The best feeling is nailing the park before the clues start getting more specific about street names and such.

i'll admit it took cocoa/mocha to convince me 'twas at como last year. and it took fairview and wheeler at newell. and those were way too obvious. so they don't count as nailing the park :)

I hadn't wanted to hunt at Como with all the other activities going on over there.

I was however at Newell already digging when the Wheeler clue came out and the masses descended on that park.

Conway was another story. I had the Capital Mall figured for that hunt.

I remember reading that Cocoa Mocha clue and wanting to croak...

I had Newell down, I was WAY off on Conway.

I never believed it was at Como either. The people who thought it was at Como were obviously on crack. Apparently it was some good crack though.

Newell I got on clue 4 when they made mention of picnic shelters (plural). I looked in the THG and sawn only three parks had multiple picnic shelters that could be seen at the same time: Como, Cherokee, and Newell. And Como and Cherokee had each just hosted it so it had to be Newell. I think the cluewriter blew it there and then with the rest of the clues, it was pretty obvious it was in Newell and there were a lot of people out there by clue 7. Last year on the other hand I think was just kind of dumb luck that someone happened to hit as early as they did. Had someone stepped on it first or something, it certainly could have gone on a couple more days. Conway on the other hand was just the opposite. It really ought to have been found much earlier considering how dug up the park got. I think part of the reason for that one was what it was hidden in. White yarn in white snow is going to be almost impossible to pick out visually.

no, allison. bad crack. good crack woulda put the med somewhere other than como :).

When I found out it really was at Como last year, I wanted to quit. Had it not been for the movie, I probably would have, but I felt like since they had been following me that far, I might as well keep trying. But even when I did go out on Sunday, I wasn't really into it.

Yes Allison, some good crack, lol!!!!

I hate to toot my own horn, and I have to admit...

Right when the coca mocha clue came out, I didn't get it. I'm sure I would have, but someone else beat me to the punch. I am on camera saying "I never have a first impression" referring to the clue. It takes awhile for me to think anything, and even then it is sometimes just deciding whos theory is better.

Newell was a cinch for me too. The plural shelters, the serve being a butler just was soooo easy.

Last year the frog pond seemed more correct than the picnic area. It just didn't seem to feel right.

AW - were you digging by yourself?

As for when they write the clues, I believe that they are pretty much written at least a month beforehand. And I think they know where they are going to put it and have a few clues in mind possibly as early as the summer. As for specific things like the Vikings depression, well that was a pretty safe bet. But even so, it wouldn't be that hard to write two different versions of that clue, or even rewrite it due to a sudden inspiration. But I doubt that they waited to write the whole thing until after that playoff game.

It's a sad day in medallion hunting when allison says he doesnt want to dig anymore.

Quit? I can't believe it

No, last year I was digging with Destiny's Hunt and other various members of my singles club, but I was kind of the leader. I insisted on trying to figure out the clues, her strategy was to see where everyone else was digging. And Michelle, if you're reading this... :P hehe

I remember one night at Conway, after being out there most of the day chopping through ice, I stood out there and lifted that shovel/chopper thing one time and said that's it...if it's out here and it gets found by someone so be it. I couldn't have lifted that chopper thing not one more time.

I guess that was the moment when it really finally sunk in that the correct interpretation of the clues and the best interpretation of the clues would never likely be the same thing.

Allison - sometimes it seems just the opposite is true. Everything falls into place and you're there. No ifs, ands or buts.

As much fun as Conway was, I remember thinking "Thank God" when it was found because I too was way too tired to try going out there yet again. And once it was found, I didn't have to try and force myself. But at least I felt like I'd given it a good try. Last year felt like such a failure.

This year allison, you should write a "letter to the editor" at the PP, as a response to the explanation of the clues, and state how dumb they are.

TV - that's because Como is so Froggin huge!

Hmmm, interesting suggestion Tim...hehe Or maybe something to add to that would be to challenge them to participate in the Mock Hunt.

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 8:40 PM Permalink
tim_the_hunter

Mayhaps you should do both at the same time.

Do the mock hunt at the same time as the Medallion Hunt? Would be like taking on the proverbial 400 lb gorilla.

sorry i meant the response and the challenge.

methinks timmers was re-interpret the clues and challenge them to participate in the same letter, allison. not run your mock hunt at the same time as the med hunt. cuz that would be scary!

Ah, yes that was what I had in mind. Which gives me an idea for a new line below my name...

Hmmm, come to think of it, since I'm soon to be unemployed anyway, maybe I should go look for a job at the PP after the hunt? But then I guess that means I couldn't hunt anymore.

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 8:49 PM Permalink
ares

come now, david, you wouldn't want to be the cluewriter anyway would you? i mean that'd mean you couldn't actually participate in the hunt.

wow. 2 identical thoughts at the same time. cool.

How bout this David...once we have the park figured out, you could hide a treasure at the same park and start writing clues to the "second" treasure in the park. That way we can dig for both at the same time.

creepy...

I think writing the clues constitues participating in the hunt. I have fun running the mock hunt and seeing people try to figure out the clues. The only problem is they don't discuss them as much as they do the medallion hunt.

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 8:53 PM Permalink

and no, rex, i'm not allison :)

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 8:53 PM Permalink

Half the fun of writing the clues though is making the clues to the park and seeing if you can fool people into thinking it's some park other than the real one.

Allison- do you remember the mock hunt we thought about 2 summers ago? In that strip of battle creek that is actually on the creek. I think that would be a great place to put it in a year with little/minimal snow such as this year. Lots of brush...

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 8:57 PM Permalink

Hmmmm, well maybe I could make a hunt just for the rehash bash?

ooops....mistake. i thought i was writing on AOL IM..which I have going at the same time.

im really thinking a new park will be the hiding spot this year. more parks need to be included in the hunt.

wasn't just talking about me, llady. lolol!

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 8:58 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

True, it would be, but that gets back to the question of when do they write the clues and do they know there will be little or no snow at that point? I don't think so personally. But that would be a good place to hide it if they really wanted to be obscure and have the hunt last a while.
