2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

allison-if they dont consider snow conditions, don't you think last years hunt would have been over on friday afternoon.

yes it is, needs to be postmarked before jan 20

I think they consider snow conditions when they place it. But it's hard in a year like this to know what the snow conditions will be much more than a couple of weeks ahead of time and I think they need more time than that to write the clues. You have to figure out where you want it. then you have to scout the location out and figure out what you can use for clues. Then you have to try and get an idea of what order you want to reveal things in. Then you have to think of how you're going to write the clue for each bit of information. Then you have to work it into a rhyme scheme. Then you may play around with the order some more. And that's assuming you don't have any sort of overall clue that runs from one clue to the next like the last year it was in Battle Creek. I think that takes a while. It even takes me a while. hehe.

My theory is multiple clue sets for different conditions

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 9:07 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Actually that is possible. There aren't many reasons to not have multiple clue sets. The only ones I can think of is it would kind of suck to have to devise a whole treasure hunt clue set that never gets used. And if it did get used, it seems to me they'd be a bit nervous about trying to keep it secret for a whole year.

does anyone know of a site that has old weather predictions from years past.

Small seldom or never used park is due, Marydale? Maybe a Rec Center?

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 9:16 PM Permalink

I doubt the weather people are brave enough to keep such a record in a public place.

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 9:17 PM Permalink
tim_the_hunter

yes, I was thinking that perhaps when the winter was predicted to be mild that there were two sets of clues that year, and the one for less snow had more time spent on it, and therefore the clues sucked... (dr evil pinky finger thing)

1. Predicted a mild winter

2. Possibility of a snow less winter.

3. Two sets of clues are written, one for snow, one without.

4. The cluewriter anticipates no snow, scouts a spot for a snow less hunt.

5. There is snow and the weather people were wrong(sigh).

6. The cluwriter goes to the back up plan, the snow hunt clues.

7. The clues are sub-par, the hunt isn't as good as others.

multiple clue sets would be appropriate right up until the last couple of them that pinpoint the location. at least then the clues that weren't used one time could be used in a future hunt.

Top 10 Ways the Cluewriter Could Drag Out the Hunt (Seriously)

1. Hide the Medallion in a park outside the city that hardly any hunters are familiar with and doesn't appear in the Treasure Hunter's Guide.

2. Hide the medallion on public property, but not in a park. Like the year it was hidden under an overpass. (Not that I would suggest an overpass again though).

3. Make the clues really vague and really lame. (This is probably the most likely one)

4. Hide the medallion in something white that is likely to get snow to cling to it (like the white yarn pouch of 99)

5. Put it in a park that has bad parking.

6. Put it in a park in a part of town people wouldn't want to go to (Well, the Star Tribune would be more likely to do that)

7. Write really clever clues that make it look like it's in a particular popular park when the clues also fit a more obscure park.

8. Dig up a spot of snow. Place the medallion there. Then dig up another spot of snow and pile that snow on top of the medallion and people will just assume someone's already been by and dug up that spot.

9. Hide it in a snowbank by the side of the road.

10. Hide it under the snow on a commonly used pathway.

ok, just a thought here guys, there is a brand new park here on the east side, I'm not sure of the name but I think it's on hoyt and flandrau,(not sure on spelling there) I'm gonna drive by it tomorrow. hubby said he thinks he saw like some memorials or somthing around the entrance to the park. not many people know about this one so it would really throw people off!

all very correct, allison. i especially like 8 and 9, and iirc, they've done 9 before, or something very similar to it.

hey do you have someplace that's got an archive of all your hunt-related wisdom like this stuff?

8-10 are some of my personal conspiracy theories

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 9:36 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Actually, no, I don't have any sort of archive, though I suppose Trent and Jackie probably do!

number 10 was at como in 97

And yes, I seem to recall from the cooler crew site that it was hidden unprotected in a snow bank one year. I just thought of that because I recalled looking at snowbanks in the past and wondering if was really in there, but even moreso wondering if I felt like digging it up even if I knew it was in there.

llady, i wish st paul parks and rec would keep their site updated. i'm not seeing your park :(

probably not there yet, the just finished it shortly before winter.it's where they tore down all those houses because of the flooding. the houses were all condemed and they wouldn't let em rebuild cuz the area would flood all the time.

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 9:43 PM Permalink

they sorta did #10 at como in '90 with the torpedo, too.

the unprotected snowbank was in '63, and it was frozen in a snowball on h.i. in '78.

That is a definite possibility llady... my #1 conspiracy theory is that they hide the medallion to beat steves book

But if that is true Tim, it seems like last year you couldn't have possibly found it without Steve's book and it's help in decoding all the obscure references to things that no longer exist.

and that timmers, is why steve must continue to update his book. and if he updates it, we will buy.

actually, allison, someone who's been around long enough would be able to pick up on those obscure references.

I definetely DIDN'T use his book last year. The medallion was found in a bunch of trees, and a few picnic tables. I really didnt spend that much time on the beulluah drive thing, unfortunetely. My dad did though, and that is why he got closer than I did. I figured it was another park clue and I was in the right park.

Good evening everyone! How goes it?

Mon, 01/14/2002 - 9:52 PM Permalink

Hmmmm, on second thought, people told me last year that the guide made reference to the same things the clues did like the old trolley tracks and the bridge that used to be there, but now that I actually look at it, I don't see it.

ironically, rush, we're actually discussing the hunt.
