2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

My Dalliance

A quick search on the Internet reveals that Ares is a bloodthirsty war god. heh heh. That's not the Ares I met. He's really quite nice.

The medallion does not have to be hidden prior to the beginning of the hunt. I was told that personally by Ma PP.

Good info to know. When they drop it doesn't really change things though.

I just found out i have to bee out of town next friday/saturday night, the prime weekend!! I hope it will go into the next week, couldn't stand to see it found when i didn't even get a chance, but you can be sure i will be out as soon as a park comes clear and every day/night i get back

hey, 2k2, hunting is in your blood. once it gets there you can't get rid of it. i know if i ever found it, it'd be one heck of an incentive to go find it again.

What about this theory? There are several (possible) medallions, which are not hidden at the outset, and well into the hunt one night, several potential hiders venture out into the parks until one finds a place where no one is currently around or digging. Then, suddenly, that person throws/stamps/pounds that precious package down into the snow . . . where it was not before.

I hear that, i've been hunting for a while, it would be too hard to just get rid of the hunting itch, we're all in it for life

hmmm. i'd say that's unlikely, md. there'd have to be some way of virtually instant communication to the other hiders, lest multiple medallions be hidden. and that communication would do a good job of giving the location away.

I think that back in 84' at Newell, when it took that extra clue -that they forgot to put it out and they went back out and dropped it between the picnic bench and the tree --- Conversation between hiders-"da, I thought you hid it this year" "no...I though you hid it this year" "better get it out there!" :)

Vibrating pagers? I'd like to know how you plan on knowing about those! Secret-service-like earpieces? I put nothing past these guys! After all, they have to at least try to outwit us.

carried a pager for a while till i got my cell, md. can't guarantee the message'd get through.

What about this theory?

I doubt it just because of it having been found so early in previous years.

We'll have to ask Cathi if it was in turned over snow or if it was still fresh snow (Not dug up yet). I know Scribe, I, Medkids, Jake, Leelabell & her hubby and a few others, all stopped and dug for a few minutes in the area Cathi found the puck last year.

When we started digging in that area the snow hadn't been disturbed yet. So, if she found it in undisturbed snow, it was buried before the hunt began.

Just got a new cell phone with internet capability. My better half asked me what I would ever use it for. Couldn't believe he asked that. "For the medallion hunt, of course!!!" When it comes to the last clue on Wednesday night, it's who has the fastest cell or computer. GEEZ!!!

I think your right about the undisturbed snow that Cathi found it in. I was gone for that 45 minutes when she found it but when I got back and we were all crowded around - there were areas dug up but not everywhere. The Camo Crew was was right there too so it was gonna be found within that day. I was at the bar with Maureen, Scott, Jake, and everyone else afterwards and Cathi showed up so excited. Were you there too THX?

My husband was out there when Cathi found it. He said the area was dug up and she had said he had been digging there the day before and for a few hours before she found it. We walked by that area a many of times and thought it would be there. We were wrong.

but right were she found it-she was so nervous pointing at the spot. it was like sacred to go near it. :-) it looked as if she flipped the snow over and up it popped. it was funny-had to be there- my husband always looks at me like "why are you telling me this"- just babblin' :)

No, we were there late Saturday night early Sunday morning. And then again Sunday during the day. I had to work on Monday but I believe Scribe went out again on that Monday (It was found on Monday, right?)

Anyway, Early Sunday (About 1:00 or 2:00AM) we weren't really digging in that area but, some of the gang was down diggin' by the fire pits. Our group was on the way to the fire pits to say hello to Jake, Steve, Tim...... and our little group stopped and dug a bit by the benches. Jake came up to say hello and he dug with us a bit. We didn't stay in that area long because we were actually on our way to go have a late/early breakfast at Mickeys and were just going to say hi/goodbye to everyone.

I was way off-if you remember my theories last year about Mears park-I made sense but only to me! hahahahaha - but at Como, I was up more by the baseball field. --be back in a minute, gotta top off the coffee.

I don't remember but, I would have loved it to be at Mears! A downtown park would be great!

well then, jt, you've got no reason to not have met me!

We had the kids and we don't want them corrupted.

:-)

Seriously, I wish I could have met ya. Where were you digging that day? Down by the fire pits?

well, last year I got so deep with the clues that I considered the clues to be useful in both parks! And I sure learned a ton about St. Paul history in the process. You want to talk about feeling out of place downtown-people thought we were crazy-one guy thought I was a prostitute and another asked for $$

Does anyone else think it's going to be at Harriet Island this year?

Also, has anyone seen "Dancing Bush" on the Internet? Can't wait to see "Pretzel Choking Bush."

MD, I thought about Harriet because of the new reconstruction being completed. Thought it would bring interest to the area and more people to check things out. But then I thought they would be very upset if it was destroyed by those not knowing anything about the hunt.

Hi Everyone. I was just wondering if anyone knows the earliest the medallion was found? Or why there were 2 hidden way back in 1953?

learning the history is part of the fun of the hunt, me2. i'm actually waiting for a gangster clue to show up somewhere.

I would love it to be at Harriet-I can literally throw a rock at it from my front yard and hit it. That would be fun-but-I think it is too newly remodeled.

harriet, highland, phalen and hidden, md. mostly because they're all a bit overdue as the bigger parks go. them's my picks.

TD: We're thinking the same thing. What else besides the grass could get destroyed by digging, though?

Mommy: Your post about 2 medallions ties into my theory about there being more than one medallion. What if more than one was hidden? And in different parks? After all, when someone finds the first one, everyone stops looking. Thus, no one would ever know more than one had been hidden unless two were found . . . simultaneously.

I agree with highland or hidden falls- HF is newly updated too and looks good and it is not as well known as Highland.

two were hidden in '53 because the first was deemed to have been found too soon. something on the order of 5 days. so they hid another one.

I recall a story (don't have my trusty binder with me) about a couple finding it by accident taped under a bench during a marriage proposal. Think is was at Highland Park.

Does Hidden include all the adjacent pasture-like and wooded area between the Falls and the river? Gotta admit -- a park named "Hidden" really lends itself to being a hiding place.

Hi Everyone. I was just wondering if anyone knows the earliest the medallion was found? Or why there were 2 hidden way back in 1953?

I don't know how early it was found but, it was found so early that they had to hide it twice that year.

I want to say it was found prior to the start of the hunt and then another year after only a few clues. One was hidden inside a chest, the other taped to a bench. Would have to check it out.

its a quantum physics thing. dr. schrœdinger puts a cat in a sealed box, which you can't see into, with a sealed vial of poisonous gas. you pick a random event which has a 50/50 percent chance of happening within say an hour. if that event occurred, the vial gets broken and the cat dies. if not, the cat lives. the theory goes that at the end of that hour, since you can't tell whether the cat is dead or alive, it is 50% dead and 50% alive. the only way to determine it is to actually observe the cat, forcing the universe to choose which state the cat is in. i could get a lot more technical if you wanted.

and for those who would say this is off-topic, let me put it this way. there's a 50/50 chance of the medallion being hidden before the hunt starts. but until you actually observe the puck, you don't know if it's been hiddden, so its 50% hidden and 50% not hidden. lol
