Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

This is more interesting:
Humans first came to Minnesota during the last ice age, following herds of large game as glaciers melted. Long before the first Europeans arrived, Native Americans from as far away as 1,000 miles came to make ceremonial pipes from soft red pipestone carved from sacred quarries. The Pipestone National Monument in southwest Minnesota illustrates how these quarries were and still are used.
Five thousand years ago, humans made rock carvings of people, animals, and weapons that can be seen today at Jeffers Petroglyphs in southwestern Minnesota. These people also brought to Minnesota the idea of building earth mounds for graves and sacred ceremonies. At one time there were more than 10,000 of these mounds in Minnesota.
I love it! That is great information that could pertain to Mounds & Cherokee Park.
Just a re-hash--We already covered yesterday that the first 2 parks were donated on July 2, 1849 Rice & Irvine Parks, by Henry M. Rice & John R. Irving. Which are actually "town squares".
Since the puck was found at Como last year, here is a tidbit about it...Como park was named for Lake Como in Italy. 320 acres of land and 107 acres of water. St. Paul purchased it in 1873 for at the time the largest park in the city.
Maybe it will be at Phalen this year. The park consisting of 216 acres of land and 222 acres of water. Named after Ed Phalen was murdered---ooooooooh,a mystery.
Is anyone paying attention here?-(slapping down the teachers ruler)
Missing the beginning of the hunt for the first time! Going dog sledding/ice fishing/camping till Wed. Wait till I get back to start the serious hunting o.?
Finally the anticipation will soon be put to rest by the excitement of noodling, can't believe it's finally upon us, we're all ready, bring on the clues!
Actually, Ed Phalen was not murdered. At least not in MN. He was a suspect in the first murder here, after which he fled west. Maybe he was murdered in CA? He is considered one of the first white settlers to the St Paul area.
Snoopy is awsome! Charles M. Shultz was born in Minneapolis in 1922 (same yr as my grandma) but grew up in St. Paul. he graduated from central high school (same as my grandma). Peanuts began in 1950.
Perhaps this is fitting as the park is named for Edward Phalen (also spelled Phelan) who made a land claim here during Minnesota's territorial days. A soldier discharged from Fort Snelling, he was imprisoned but released as a suspect in the city's first murder. In 1850, Phalen was indicted for perjury and fled west. Does this help?
ha, thats funny... while looking for the information about the swede hollow murder (in a book) I came across Terry Knapps phone # (from Camo Crew)-forgot I had it and coincidence on timing since the hunt begins in roughly 36 hours. :)
I stand corrected (but don't expect to stump me all the time) :)- I knew it was an interesting story for the first murder in Minnesota-just got the characters mixed up-
Phalen though did own Swede Hollow and I think it is a really great place to hide the puck - they could use Phelan/Phelen clues for both Swede Hollow & Phelan Park!
now that would be a really good stumper, me2. i don't believe they've ever made a reference to phalen in phalen hunts either, so its just the sort of thing they could use. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.
Swede Hollow is recently fixed up (past couple of years) I have been down there once in a while and it looks nice-but not well lit at night. I went down there with a group at night but spooky. Doesn't Phelan Creek flow through the brewery then through Swede Hollow to the Mississippi?

not last year but the year the medallion was hidden at Conway: alot of the clues fit Swede Hollow and John Ireland Park. Thats how I became intrigued with Swede Hollow.
I correct myself----ooops- Alexander Ramsey was the first governor of the territory! duh, I like both Sibley and Ramsey and mix them up occasionally- they were friends though. I even have a letter signed by Ramsey. I am just typing before thinking-but don't want to lead you the wrong way--I am such an awsome history teacher! :)
Anyone have a copy of the Pioneer Press (probly when it was the Pioneer Press / Dispatch) released with first medallion clue in it? know when it was 1st in the newspaper? (I don't).

Nevermind, I thought you were asking which of the two was a "Town Square".
oh and Minnesota is Sioux for "sky tinted waters" -
Hamm's learned me that
pass the beer cliff! CHEERS! to the hunt!

Yes Teacher!
Whaa, whaa, whaaa, whaa, whaa....(teache from Peanuts)
keep the facts coming, me2.

by the way, good morning/afternoon all

it's afternoon, 2k2. speaking of that, let's see if we can do this the right way this time:
afternoon everybody.
Snoopy is awsome! Charles M. Shultz was born in Minneapolis in 1922 (same yr as my grandma) but grew up in St. Paul. he graduated from central high school (same as my grandma). Peanuts began in 1950.
Coming home for the weekend and for the hunt. Is it as cold in st. paul as it is here in Rochester "9 degrees" or is it worse.
On my weather bug it said the low last night was -0. Now can someone explain to me how you can have a negative of nothing?
Ares! (or were you looking for Norm!)
who was involved with the murder connected to swede hollow park? I thought that was Phalen?
ares works frosti :)
how about less than 0, 2k2, but above -1?
If it's the same murder I'm thinking of, Phalen was a suspect, not the murdered party. Check out mom's archived thingy under phalen park.
http://www.pioneerplanet.com/archive/winter_guide/39_park.html
Could the temp actually be -0.4, and they're rounding it to -0?

Good morning everyone. Tim, where are you?
afternoon, kids. how was the scoping this morning?
How-dee
I'm now officially off work until I find the medallion.
Ares, there has been no scoping. I haven't gotten any calls from Tim!

yeppers, 2, if creek is what you want to call it. as does the vento trail.
hmm. yet another historical figure from the city's history.

Yeah it is kind of spooky down there at night. Same thing with the Vento Memorial Trail.

ah, FYI - about the Summit thing yesterday---
Summit park is 4/5 of an acre and has the monument for soldiers of the Civil War.
It sounds like there are 3 parks in this vacinity? Nathan Hale is at Summit Outlook. And then there is Portland Place & Point of View?
Me Too, Me Too! Baileys & coffee in hand at all times, mmmmmmm!
So, are you a one-handed digger ?
the right does most of the work and holds the drink steady and makes sure the rim gets to the lips once every 54 seconds, the left just has to dig. :)
Talent! I have a tough time using the shovel one-handed...
It gets tough by about the 5-6th day when your eyes are half open from lack of sleep and your shivering with icicles hanging from your nose!
Yipe. You're going to peak too early if you're that wrung out by day 5. Pace yourself. ;-)

As long as we're not being tested on this.
hey? is there a Goodhue Park or school playground around?
There's a Dousman Park on Goodhue.
Paladrome straight ahead! 7227 comin' your way!
James M. Goodhue was like the first owner of the Minnesota Pioneer - Pioneer Press- 1st printed Saturday, April 28th, 1849.
Just incase a clue makes reference to the original owner of their newspaper.
Anyone have a copy of the Pioneer Press (probly when it was the Pioneer Press / Dispatch) released with first medallion clue in it? know when it was 1st in the newspaper? (I don't).
I don't but on a sort of related note
