2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

I hate when John resets my clock.

I reset it because it got screwed up somehow when she rearranged the furniture.

She was 15 minutes early the other day and I was in a meeting so she had to sit and wait for me.

I was thinking of her.

???????????????????

Good Evening!

Nice to see the days grow a bit longer, isn't it?

Lots of noodling and figuring going on here considering we're still clueless...and will remain that way for a bit more than 24 hours.

OK, there was talk earlier today about the temperature and 0 degrees. So here is something cool-you may have or have not heard it...

on "weekest link" day show today the guy said he would give double their zero$. ....which made me think of this too....

Looks like a good clue analysis from My Dalliance. The only thing I wonder though is, what does it actually tell us? If there are any clear patterns, I'm sure the clue writer will make a point of breaking them.

If it is zero degrees today and twice as cold tomarrow, what would the temperature be?

Fri, 01/18/2002 - 5:00 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I suppose it would be around -226 degrees below zero.

1939, 1947, whatever's better, can you throw in 98, love that year. Can't make it sat. So have to meet on the dig site.

Fri, 01/18/2002 - 5:03 PM Permalink
Terry

And to top off all the noodling - we might have a different clue writer this year.

I really don't see much in the way of a pattern anyways. There seldom is. The only things that seem certain is the first clue will state Ramsey County or city limits and to stay off golf courses. Usually one of the early clues tells us what it's in if you're clever enough to figure that out and the very last clues narrow the hunt within the park that gets identified about midway through.

Whatchew mean you can't make it to the pre-dig gig, Maureen? Ugh!!!!!

Here's something interesting to think about. You can't actually feel the cold air. The only thing you can really feel is your own skin, because that is as far as your nerves go. So when you step outside and it feels like it's below zero out, you're not really feeling sub-zero air. You're really only feeling your skin and how it's temperature has dropped below what it normally is. Once your skin gets to 32 degrees, it would freeze and I doubt you'd still feel anything at that point. Consequently, we can never really know what anything colder than 32 degrees genuinely feels like. All we can really notice is how quickly it cools our skin below it's usual temperatures.

Here's a tricky one back for you. You're out hunting and it's 20 degrees out, but a wind kicks up and the wind chill get's down to 0. You decide to go get some coffee and leave your shovel sitting out for an hour. What temperature is the shovel when you get back?

Fri, 01/18/2002 - 5:10 PM Permalink
Terry

It's the same as when you left it.

Fri, 01/18/2002 - 5:10 PM Permalink
me2

The answer I was given on the twice as cold Q was -230 F.

Fri, 01/18/2002 - 5:11 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

No, presumably it would have cooled off some since you're not holding it anymore and there's no body heat going into it.

I DITTO Terry! :)

I think (but I'm not completely sure) that absolute zero is -453. Maybe it's -459 though.
