2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

What do you think of this one---"have no fear"---not afraid of heights-so go to a park with heights in its name or with bluffs OR stay away from a park with heights (bluffs) or heights in its name?

It could mean something to do w/ Ft. Snelling perhaps?

I think fear rhymes with here and the cluewriter isn't a great poet. I think it tells us that the cluewriter quit at the last minute and that their manager must have taken over, because we all know how managers *think* they can do our jobs just as well as we do.

LOL Allison! Too true...

But I still think it is more than 1 person doing the work...

Actually I am really sick and tired of the PP employee people thinking they are so "high & mighty" and like we are "in their way"--like when we go to get the clues at night. Do you get that same impression? I sure do!

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 5:29 PM Permalink
Annie B.

Where did that impression come from? I guess I have never gone down to get the clues directly from them.

Well - I think I am going for now - see you later...

I know---it builds up. When AW said cluewriter and then the managers thinking they always know better--The PP company does it cause it makes $$-can you imagine if they pulled it from carnival activities? But they act like they really don't want to do it--but it is their jobs. I hate being around people who when working put their noses up in the air. If you go down their, just watch how they watch us--fake smiles and crazy looks and all. Like last night for instance...the woman sat there in a chair to hand out papers and totally acted like she was MADE to do it, all loungy, like hurry up and get outta here so I can go back to my real job, like we were bugging her.

Hi all - Packers are losing bad so I thought I would stop here for a moment.

Hey Jordenn, missed you last night.

How are you feeling?

Fort Snelling isn't in either St. Paul or Mpls. It's a federal reverservation. But of course Snelling Ave.is in St. Paul.

If we're going in that direction-I'm thinking of the original Battle Creek Park where the Highwood area begins.Closed for years-it's been open to the public for awhile.Chief Kaposia and his Lakota Sioux fought their dreaded enemy, the Ojibway back in 1842.I used to go down there a lot as a kid.In those days, the caves were open.

The medallion was hidden there at least once, but not for many years.

Leelabell: Good, but a bit tired. Long weekend at work. Lots to do...... Sorry I missed last night. I really wanted to go, but I was so beat! Had to work early this morning, so I just wanted to get to bed early. (Next time, I need to take the day off) Sure hope to meet up with people later during the hunt!

ME2:The PP employees might be disgruntled because they're not eligible for the hunt.Next time, tell that snooty lady that you'll split the winnings with her.

You should get an interesting reaction.

Just checking my log in. I forget my password every year.

Unrelated to the clue, I was thinking about the theme points of patriotism.

It seems likely that they might pick up on that theme.

Today, for no particular reason, I tend toward Battle Creek and Highland.

Although, I visted the Nathan Hale Statue today.

I love your Battle Creek ideas- I have kept BC on the back burner

Far and Wide - Battle Creek is actually pretty far to drive to even with Old Shepard Rd. and at the wide end of the river ??

what do you all think about the state fair is that a possibility

The fairgrounds are in falcon heights

I like Battle Creek, along with a few others

the state fair grounds on Midway parkway & Snelling in the 55108 zip code? since when Falcon Heights?

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:01 PM Permalink
ANGIE A

so what about Capital mall

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:02 PM Permalink
Wabbit

I could be wrong, but I do think it's falcon heights. The St Paul campus is in falcon heights.

But, I do not believe that they would put it there. They patrol that very regularly. In college, I walked around in there during non fair times and were watched quite closely by a patrol in a truck. I don't believe it would be any different now.

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:03 PM Permalink

It was hidden there before at the fairgrounds

Capital Mall seems interesting, but I am not sure of the park status.

Spark for fireworks and perhaps, patriotic, but since when is government patriotic really.

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:04 PM Permalink

The State Fairgrounds are defintely in Falcon Heights, albeit right on the borders. You can't always rely on zip codes to define border. For example, I live in St. Paul, but have the Little Canada zip code. Besides, the Fair is not a park.

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:07 PM Permalink
ANGIE A

I just saw that it was hidden at capital mall before and the spark maybe fireworks there is also a arch in search and an ark in park

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:07 PM Permalink

I think people have it on their list for patriotic reasons but I feel there will be patriotism in the clues BUT on that note St Paul is full of patriotism - the fighting Highlanders (Highland)-Fort Snelling-Capital-Battle Creek-Cherokee Park -Mounds

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:07 PM Permalink
ANGIE A

do you think it will be somewhere it hasnt been before

Sun, 01/20/2002 - 6:10 PM Permalink

The fair grounds are owned privately so it won't be there.

Good afternoon all. I see the noodling has begun. Now that we have this St Paul park thing out of the way, I wonder what the next clue will tell us. That there are trees, park benches perhaps? Or the presence or absence of water? Perhaps what the medallion is in? More things for us to noodle and over-noodle!

Let's face it, it is impossible to get the park on the first clue, as evident in the last 50 years. I still like HF, even tough the clue writer seems to be new. Although i like places with lots of trees, and Highland would great for that.

I doubt it is at Como, it isn't an annual como park event......yet.

Just as FYI, here are the words that rhyme with "park" that the clue writer had a choice of using:

arc, ark, barch, bark, barke, clark, clarke, dark, darke, harc, hark, harke, karch, lark, larke, marc, mark, marke, marque, merc, narc, parc, parke, quark, sark, shark, sparc, spark, starck, stark, starke

Not too many useful ones really, so I'm not inclined to think choosing that one necessarily has a special significance.
