2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

With the hills reference, do you all think that the smaller parks are close to out of the running? I know its hard to discount parks so soon, but the smaller, flatter parks are not as likely?

I work downtown Mpls. and live Uptown, so Loring would be perfect for me. Hope some year they do hide it in a Mpls. park.

I wouldn't bet on anything at this pont but I can go through Steve's guide and say some definite no's! But there are all to many more that could work,it's really to early to say one way or another.

I am leaning toward the river but tonight's clue may take me somewhere else entirely!

Thanks Winger! I am leaning heavily toward the river.....hope I don't fall down one of those big hills!LOL!

It can easily be interpreted to mean use you brain and stay off the hills, but I think brow means the top of a hill,(or a hat)

When I first read #2 I thought it was a flat park because of the phrasing trek up and down every hill if you have time to kill.

I went halfway down a hill at Crosby today.

I've been at Hidden Falls at night. It does get pretty dark, but they have hidden it there twice before, once just back in 1993, so it's certainly not impossible it could be there. Last year I also drove through there at night and the gates were open, although that was before 10pm. But I suspect if there are hunters in the park, they won't bother locking the gate.

Med - by this weekend, there will be a line down the block.

No I wasn't there, but I was online when Jake called Beans.

Would an un-locked gate be giving it away. And on the other side, would a locked gate mean it's not there for sure?

As for clue #2, my take is that it's in a park with several hills, but if you don't want to have to climb them all, you'll have to figure out the right one. And it does sound like you'll have to climb it because they imply using your legs will be fun.

Med - people ask that every year, especially about Phalen

Mon, 01/21/2002 - 8:09 PM Permalink
King Boreas aka Ian

It was a lot of fun just climbing those snow covered steps.

The locking of the gate is not done by the clue writer or anyone who knows where the medallion is. It's done by the parks dept and is probably entirely a function of whether or not they see a lot of hunters there.

The same is true for Harriet Island. I'm sure it wasn't the clue writer's idea to exclude it in the rules. That most likely came from the city itself and someone who had no idea if the treasure would be there or not, or what the clues might say, but wanted to be positive that the park was left alone. So I don't think we can really read anything into that.

ThoseMedallingKids

Scribe, you've got email!

Like Allison says, we can't read into it if parks are locked or not locked. They likely don't know if the medallion is hidden there or not.

need some explanation i dont get the whole "time to kill" phrase anyone have any idea of what that means?

Mon, 01/21/2002 - 8:14 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I don't think having time to kill means much of anything beyond taking the slow approach and searching every hill instead of using your brain to figure out the right one, plus the fact that kill rhymes with hill.

Mon, 01/21/2002 - 8:16 PM Permalink
KOP

hardly any rhymes in the clues.

Mon, 01/21/2002 - 8:17 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I know this was discussed earlier today already but I found it interesting to discover that brow also means the peak of a hill or the edge of something steep and knit can also mean to link something to. So to knit your brow could alternatively mean to link to the steep peek of a hill.

Did anyone else take last nights clue as the opposite? If you tire your legs, rack your brain etc, you better have time to kill, and it is saying it is not what the clue says? Someone had mentioned that last night, and haven't heard much of it since.

Mon, 01/21/2002 - 8:19 PM Permalink

The clues still have an ABAB rhyme scheme, though it's different from the AABAB rhyme scheme of recent years.

Ares, I wasn't sure who said it, were you on about 2:30 this early AM?

Mon, 01/21/2002 - 8:22 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I thought about the clue having the opposite meaning, saying to not go to any hills. But it's pretty much a given that you need to use your brain for the hunt, and in the same sentence they tell you to use your brain they also say to use your legs, so I would have to logically conclude that you're meant to use both. So I'm thinking they want you to climb the hill.
