Attention treasure hunters:

The Planet's
Winter Carnival site now has the clues and explanations for the last 10 medallion hunts. Perhaps a handy reference to analyze the fiendish mind of our clue writer.

The research was provided by Greg Sax, whom some of you may recognize from this discussion group. Please extend him a virtual pat on the back.

Happy hunting.

HIGHLAND PARK... City streets will also show you the way... a city MONTREAL... is the name of a street in the park! Also the park gets its name from being located on high ground. There is a historic stone water tower, indoor ice arena, outdoor pool, hills which are underground resevoirs not to be walked on, but help guide you.

How soon we forget, two years ago, Harriett Island, the clue "the

first place to go" refered to the big red #1 on the downtown bank.

The paper even said so afterward. Demo seems to refer to dome, dome=mound, right? Smart money says mounds park so far.

sorry mom; maybe i'm dense. I don't know what that means. It's O.K. no

need. I think I have a source.

The clues fit Rice Park the Best...

'We'd be the first to say that a place to play' (The Ordway theatre runs along Washington (the 1st president) Street)

'City Streets will also show you the way' (Ordway)

'To riches that are almost immeasurable' (minnesota art museum has immeasurable works of art)

It wont be at rice, to hard to park, to many people there for the ice carving.

you know... como last year, some guy with no clue found it and the carnival people couldn't have been more thrilled. I stayed up all night and looked for it and even whent downtown. damn it this year it's mine... you people should stay home where it's warm and have a cocktail.

You have a good point about Rice but ....

But first you'll have to break our code (rearrange code - deco. There is the Deco restaurant in the minnesota museum of art accross the sreet)

Am guessing the reference to play place serves primarily to bring us over and away from the indian mound side of Mounds Blvd. You have to "watch" for the zooming area because it is a very small hill (on the north side of the Blvd and was getting use as a sliding hill (and maybe even sledding) on day 2. If it is in Mounds prepare for the clues to pull us away from the sacred burial area. When the masses descend it won't be any where near them to be sure. Triangulate yourselves into a position where the capital or 1st Bank, Pioneer Press factory. beacon, sliding hill and maybe even the Urban street sign are all in view. Put yourself in the place of the clue writer. He or she probably composes clues after the placement based on what they saw from ground zero.In other words, clues fit the placement not the other way around. On the other hand i may be utterly and completely wrong about all of this. Also prepare for #6 to also be filler in preparation for #7.

I think there was alot of contravercy the last time it was at mounds park, with the burial mounds and all I wouldnt be surprised if the park declined to have it hidden there. Anybody remember this?

what possible reason would kids ZOOM there? Whats the big thing guiding the way? where is the g.d. woods man?

Thu, 01/29/1998 - 5:06 PM Permalink
Dan Reinhardt

it aint at rice.......THORN ST. AT MOUNDS. (ROSES) ZOOM (SLIDES AND SWINGS) WATER (MISSISSIPPI RIVER) WOODS OBVIOUS ON S. SIDE TOWER (TO GUIDE TO AIRPORT TO THE S.)

Thu, 01/29/1998 - 5:10 PM Permalink
Jake Jones

Well, the children's museum is in the area... there is/was an exhibit there that was publicized well that was called 'Geo-zoom'

And there are several streets in and around downtown that have tree names.

So there!

I think the medallion will be found this weekend. I plan to camp out there if I can risk getting sicker. I think the orignal guess of found around 8 is a great guess, but if its at mounds 6 or 7 will do it. But its been 11 years since its been at mounds so maybe 11 paces from something.

Hey gang, live updates from Mounds shortly. I think we'll check out Prospect too, or is that a dead issue? Give a yell if your up there searching. Luck.

I think Mounds is out. Highland feels more likely. The twin "dome" towers, the lighthouse...pretty dark out there too (gloom)?

It won't be at Rice Park because they'd be worried that diggers would harm the ice sculptures. Also, it would get in the way of the other carnival goings-on.

Also, 'wintry fun' may mean winter-like, as in the indoor hockey rink. Feedback?

Nimrod , I'm back on line for a bit. I looked for your email again but it looks like gibberish and my server can't figure it out either. Try emailing me (click on my head), and then I'll have a return.

A couple of other points. 1) If you went with Greg Sax's theory of no repeats, then you would have ruled out Como last year (since as Greg points out, it set a new record for turn arounds). 2) I can't remember. Oh yeah, you can see the space needle from Newell Park you know.

I think you guys are way off with Highland, it was there just 2 years ago, they never do that. Keep in mind that the 2nd or 3rd clue always gives what the medallion is in, something to do with a rose bud this year. All you Mounds fans, why????

I must agree with the budster, I cant figure out why everyone is trying to force the

MOUNDS issue. I know that all the clues fit if you force them to, but I think you are all at the wrong site.

don't see many connections besides the word immeasurable, maybe that fits with mounds? just guesses
