1998 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Hunt for the Pioneer Press medallion!

The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.

The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

Terry

You could bring water in thermos jugs. Wish we could be there. Maybe will try stopping by early 11:30 but will just have to make a quick stop to meet and run.

In "The Sum of All Fears", Clancy has middle east terrorists detonate a nuke during the super bowl. Guess who's in the game....you got it...the Vikings (they get nuked). LOL...LOL...quite ironic to me that he buys the team he nuked....

Maybe he's feeling quilty???

SEE!!!!! WE SHOULD NOT BE DISCUSSING THIS HERE!!! IT BELONGS IN THE OTHER COOLER!!!!

See??? It can be done, guys!!! We can still get together!

(Was a sysop at CServe... threads are a pain. Hope Casey doesn't have to mess with ours!)

Oh, lord!!! Terry!!! I NEVER thought of that!!! I guess I should take notes/names of folks, antidotes, etc... so that I can post here. Great idea!!! Now, if I can *just* talk somebody into doing it.....

Greenslvs2 - Better check the electric. Some of these parks turn off the power when not in use. The people at the city park permit office should know. If you live close, you could just run over and plug something in to see if it works.

Ian, you're a true Cooler Head - sick, sick, sick!!! Got your e-mail!!! So, I'm not the only one that is seeing things like "rosebud" "double" "division" "fore", etc, etc, everywhere they turn. At work, I'm trying to figure out the meaning in everything people say to me!!!! "Oh!!! Geee!!! Is that an anagram for such-and-such? What did he/she mean??? Is that some kind'a clue??"

Amidst the sadness we all feel

The new formed friendships to us reveal

A truth that goes beyond all measure

Tis in the hunt itself is found the treasure.

All hail the victors who found the treasure and the Medallion!

Don't live close by. But... was it Dan? Said that somebody was brewing coffee there just the other nite. Assumed - know what that means... - the electric is going. Three different kinds of dog poop!! How do I go about finding out if we need a permit??? Glad you mentioned it, Terry.

Things I'd like to know about others. What part of the city they live in. Length of time hunting. How they got started hunting. Have they ever been close (on top of, all around or in the hand). If not St. Paulites, where from. Do they have any other obsessions.

Digger, that was so sweet; I'm crying. Please bring a copy of it on Sunday and read it. If you don't, I will. That was wonderful and so damn true. Wish I'd written it.

Terry!!! GREAT IDEA!!! Can you make up sheets w/those questions? We can pass them out and do a kind'a "break the ice" type thing!!!!! People can read them out loud to the rest of us!!!!

GREAT IDEA!!!

Shouldn't need a permit. Permits are for shelters during the REGULAR picnic season. More like a reservation. But the people in that office should know if electric is available. Probably someone else could run over - maybe easier in the long run.

I just started laughing so hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know which is funnier!!! Folks thinking the Med was to be found in a Pace Picante lid, or me thinking everything was going to have to be paced off!!!!!!!

God, the memories!!!! This was so wonderful!!

I can't be there Sunday, wish I could,

By the water and the wood.

As you gather, your stories to tell,

I wish all you hunters well.

Terry V. Woodbury...grew up in St. Paul (eastside). Been hunting since I was yeah-high with G-ma. I was out at CP this afternoon between 1:20 and 2:00 - I was there...but I didn't see the couple find it... I left at 2:00 thinking I'd come back later. Hey...does anyone know anything about that "Crack" written in the tree - I didn't see it referenced in the clue explanations.. was that pure luck, playing a hunch. If Maurren H. is still out there - explain it to me?

Wed, 02/04/1998 - 9:17 PM Permalink

I could do the questions but will have to e-mail them to someone else just in case I don't make it. Then they could just be run off. Who can get copies run? Any other things people want to know?

AND WE'RE OFF AGAIN!!!! LOL!!!

"crack the code", I'm thinking, Brad.

Beleave me if you wish, but a week before clue number one, i was constatly reeding the past stuff, and tried to pinpoint the park n stuff and i guessed cherokee and a shoe, pretty close, as of next year i think he or she might stray from his favorite 6, cherokee, hiddin falls, highland, como, harriet, battle creek, and there band from mounds. if thry do pick one of the big 6 i say hidden falls, but i think itll be in a different one. 99 YEAR OF THE COOLER

This is so strangely funny. Planning post hunt events. Who would have thought a week ago, we'd all be trying to picnic in the middle of the winter in a park that looks like it's been trashed.

Terry

Could this be post traumatic stress syndrome?

greensIvs2

e-mail them to me. But I'll need them by Fri so that I can copy them at... ah... (COUGH) ah... work.

Who turned you on to hunting - like G-ma. If not a native, have you ever experienced this where you're from - the magnititde, the length, in harsher elements, etc.

What did you think of The Cooler/discussions/whole idea to talk w/other diggers, etc.? Will you be back next year? Would you be willing to purchase logoed "Cooler" wear?

STuff like that!!!

I haven't heard what the medallion was found in....will someone here be kind enough to tell me....and yes, the search was the reward in itself.

Wed, 02/04/1998 - 9:27 PM Permalink
greensIvs2

What's so funny about a post hunt event? Or strange, I should say? War veterans get together to relive what they've been thru. Validates it for them.

This will solidify (ice?) our shared experience. Plus, we're starting a NEW TRADITION!!! A picnic in the middle of winter!!!! It beats jumping into a lake and freezing your Medallions off!!!

Just think!!! You'll be able to tell your grandkids, etc., that you began this!!!!

I'll be back. Was here last year too - except when the server was down.

Yes I would purchase Cooler wear. Thought that would be a great idea.

Think the idea of finding other WC discussions to participate would be great idea. Maybe we could suggest a Med check in space where we could post during the year. Wonder if that would work?

Hi, Allie!! Great to see you!! A sox, "Navy", of all things. Tied in with Annapolis. Rite. Would have been the first thing that jumped into my mind. NOT. Should have saved the idea for the next Harriet Iland gig.

giddyup back again...greenslvs2. What's in your name? Do you have green sleeves or do you just like the song? Has anyone else been hunting for 20 odd years? I remember hunting (first time) in the late 70s at mounds park. Back then the med was hidden almost anywhere. You think the carnage at CP was bad...back in the old days the parks were completely demolished. Gotta love the net for letting medophiles like ourselves get together and talk about it (aside from staring at each other during the hunt). Anyone else feel a little bit nostalgic?

Part of the funny is that part of my work is planning events for an intergenerational program that I coordinate. This is the ultimate!

Thanks greenslvs2...can't believe it's a blue sock!

greensIvs2

Well, Terry, you've said it here. I've a gut feeling that some bean counter at the PP is gonna go thru this w/a fine tooth comb. Think the lawyer's have a go at it too, just to be on the safe side!!! LOL!!!

I think we're strongly on record... and I think it mite come to pass. Think we may have to push it a bit... maybe do studies, prove the worth, etc., but if not this coming year (and I'd be surprised if it didn't happen), but in the very near future... I think we'll have logoed wear.

At least I'm gonna keep pushing for it. :) What the heck do I have to do for the next 12 months?????

giddyup - our first hunt was in 70 at Battle Creek, maplewood. The next year at Wakefield with mountains of snow.

Thought this year would be easier. Less snow than some past hunts. The ice and snow compaction - ugh!

Wed, 02/04/1998 - 9:38 PM Permalink
greensIvs2

Giddy, what are you talking about? Our hokey, made-up Crew wear (white against dark; maybe a white summer object, i.e., like my white golf cap), or the grass roots movement of logoed wear for people to purhcase????

I think my hunting buddy fell off the face of the earth. I haven't seen him in the water cooler. If you're still alive, send me email...I hope your'e not still out there looking.

greenslvs2....I'll check with several connections at the PP to see what I can find out. Think the "gear" is a great marketing pitch for the "hunt". Know a couple columnists.

Allie, that wasn't the colour. It was the brand, and I believe, stitched on the sock. I *think* the sock was white.

Thanks, giddy. You've my e-mail address.

Name: I took the name I did as I only wear green. Made sense to me!!! LOL!!! Plus, nice song.

I've been thinking of using a new name: Greenjeans... but still thinking!!

giddyup, been there myself. Remember my old man hauling me out to get

the paper 'round midnight, then going hunting, then DELIVERING the

paper in the morning. Med hunting is in my blood. I guess that was

back in the mid-'60s.... Still reminds me that Spring is right around

the corner.

greenslvs2...grass roots wear for veteran and new hunters. Thinking there is an untapped market out there for "true" hunters that could bring a hightened interest to the hunt as a whole. Anyone concur??

greensIvs2

I hope the PP has somebody logging e-mail addresses. This Cooler is a WEALTH of info for some historian!!!

Wed, 02/04/1998 - 9:49 PM Permalink
greensIvs2

giddy: I was the first and ONLY purrson to take AllieGo's idea of name tags all the way to the screen printers. Now, I ask you - what do you think I think??? I think the PP is gonna jump on this like a cat on a grasshopper!!! Almost every adult and quite a few of the kids said they'd purchase logoed wear. As I write, I can hear it being discussed about the PP as to the merit of it.

Wouldn't have been a viable idea five years ago... No Net. Now, however, we've The Cooler - which is not only a great equalizer, but brings together so many different people from different walks of life, and then - makes us equal in our one mutual goal.

I could go on, but I think you may get my drift. I *really* think the PP will take this as far as they can. Hope they choose green!!!!!!!!!!!
