The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.
The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...
Hick
Just think of the possible withdrawl symptoms here...11 days of staring at the water cooler page, sifting through the hundreds of missed messages in the middle of the nite. This has become routine! How long is the WC going to be around? Perhaps the PP could leave it as a year round addition to Pioneer Planet...maybe it already is...
Agreed. What an extension of the already proven WC discussions that go on concerning the hunt for the Med (as well as outside the hunt). Think the PP needs to take advantage of the "Hype" surrounding the whole affair to expand their presence. What a wonderful vehicle we've provided the PP to act on!!!! Hope they don't miss on the opp.
Don't think so, Hick, even as much as I would like to see it happen. Thing is with something like the Cooler - it's *supposed* to be just one giant thread.
Hypothetically, threads are not supposed to break down, i.e., get off the topic. (That's why they're called threads!!) But even in an excellent thread like the Med Cooler - wandering occurs. For example, this entire post of mine is "off the thread" here as it better belongs under a title of "Thread Discussion" than "Discussing Clues."
So, given that understanding... and that it's only been approximately eight hours since the Med's been found and that this [Med] thread has almost totally gone off thread... I doubt this Cooler will be open much longer. The PP is gonna need the space for other topics.
We're hoping they'll keep it open until Sunday nite, or maybe Monday or Tuesday so that we're able to post about the Re-Hash Bash and let folks access it... But, don't know. Space is very valuable on a server.
Yea, giddy. We need to xplain to Hick about the other topics in the other Coolers and that the Med may be gone, but we can still gather and pick each other's brains as
Greenslvs, I'll check in tomorrow here for any other questions for the ice breaker than get them e-mailed to you. If this discussion forum disappears, I have your e-mail address. I will get them to you tomorrow evening.
If this disappears before I can get back on, keep track of any new ideas and e-mail them to me. Will just wait here a little longer tonight.
Gsleeves, I wouldn't miss it. It's at 11:30, correct? Are we supposed to wear any identifying garb, such as the white hanky? Or I suppose it is no longer necessary since we'll be the only ones in the park. 'Cept maybe those folks hawking Cooler-gear... Do you think anyone will have the courage to get something printed up by then?
The thread has gotten very thin, I expected more of the regulars to still be around...I don't know what other WC topics could be as good as the Med WC...it's treasure, the motherlode, "Prospecting" (I thought for sure it was there...)
Oh well, back to the farm and everyday chores I guess.
Howdy, me and the hubby created a t-shirt and wore it last night. It has the open mouthed face guy on it put thru some different effects. It says "Cooler Crew '98" on it. We also made badges using the graphics we had for our names. I'm a graphic designer and could make other stuff too! Hope to see you at the bash
I won't be closing this discussion until it really slows down, then I'll move it to the "Old Discussions" folder. If some of you wish for a general discussion area just to chat with folks, I'd be receptive to that. Just e-mail me.
By the way, PioneerPlanet will be featuring chat rooms real soon. Sorry we couldn't get it operational for the medallion hunt.
Casey just mentioned a chat room...although that would have been nice to have, I'm really glad we had the board. It was nice to be able to go through the messages before or after going out. I'm afraid that might be lost with a chat room.
I lost track of where I was digging..at one point I had things lined up...I was so very very close to that spot..and only a few minutes away from reaching it..problem was, it was gone and I didn't know it.
Green, Sunday time set for 11:30? Also, We can bring Water through the woods from our house. Then no-one has to transport too far AND we can always get more:)
I was all set for a cold day for digging too...I bought a new parka, which I am now modeling *grin* There are a lot of other WCs I found, anyone here frequent any in the list?
Ok, nite all, thanks to all that participated that are still around here, I would still be digging in Prospect if it wasn't for all the help I found here. KCT, great job, keep it up.
If you haven't already seen the treasure map on the "Winter Carnival Page" click on "Where, exactly, was it?" Sure makes it look easy, but we all know it was anything but.
I just wanted to say that I've lived in Minnesota for only four years now and have never been interested in looking for the medallion until I stumbled upon the Water Cooler.
You guys are real entertaining and are so committed to finding the medallion, that it is catchy... I will definitely be back next year and hopefully be able to add to the deciphering of the clues.
Me Dal Leon Hunter: Drop me a line from time to time, need to make sure I still have a hunting partner for next year...
As for the Cooler gear, it would be cool to have the year printed on it. That way you could show the grandkids every year that you participated...
Hey, good going folks! I had a good time reading the messages and digging in Cherokee Park. See you all Sunday morning at 11:30 in Cherokee Park. Dave Young daveyoung@bigfoot.com
I haven't posted in a while, and many of my fellow regulars may not even get a chance to read this, but I wanted to at least send a shout out to my Water Cooler brethren. Maybe some of you will check back in the morning just to see what people could possibly be talking about. So here's something to read:
I love my hometown and I particularly love how we get together for a harmless little dig in the park. Thanks to this medium and the people that made up its core forum, I was able to feel very close to the excitement even when I was 300 miles away. I've adjusted to my new home in Milwaukee, but you folks rekindled my deep respect for St. Paul and proved that you can still have a small-town, friendly feel in a major league city. We're basically all strangers with an odd obsession for little blue plastic coins. To some, that may be the kind of group to stay away from, but here we helped each other enjoy the hunt and made an effort to find each other in the real world (something most computerheads don't do). Rarely did someone turn this into a farce. We stayed on topic and all seem to have had a lot of fun. I know I did.
I got so wrapped up in the frenzy that I made an impromptu visit to St. Paul last Friday night just so I could get my neck out in the field and my shovel deep in the snow. I'm glad I did because when I came back to Milwaukee and we all knew it was at Cherokee I could stay in the conversation because I'd seen the 3 pyramids, I walked down the sledding hill, and I'd "traipsed" around the park "to and fro." Saturday night I parked the car on Chippewa just a few yards back from Wyoming. Of course, I went digging completely in the wrong direction, but I was there, and that's the next best thing to finding it. The people I know here in Milwaukee don't understand this sort of thing, but they're not supposed to. Heck, the people over in Minneapolis aren't even supposed to understand it. It's a St. Paul thing and it will be part of me no matter where I am.
I wish I could join you on Sunday, but I'm afraid another trip back so soon isn't possible. Take care, all. Remember your handles for next year. Casey said we may be able to chat by then. That sure could be less frustrating when the server's strained, but I hope it doesn't keep us from expressing complete thoughts. I tend to avoid chat rooms because of the ridiculous one-liners like "who's there?" and "really? me, too." I have faith that we're all above that. Peace out.
Hello ! What do I do now? Reading all the overnight posts was part of my "pre-work" routine. Anyway, random thoughts...I didn't get to "hear the locusts" (Greg) And you just about had the timing nailed down (It was a little bit after noon.)
My 11 year old son and I were fighting over "computer time" because we both wanted to read everyone's thoughts. The clues were "picked apart" very well here, thanks to the variety of ideas.
Casey: an important part of this forum was the chance to read over all the posts that we had missed. I don't think that would be possible with a chat room.
Crew Members!!!! Be on the look out for ticks. Yup. I found one crawling around my tub - by boots were rite next to it. Guess stirring up all those leaves woke the little suckers (!!) up!!!
You did a great job and we had a lot of fun for a week. I'm completely amazed how those clues fit both Mounds and Cherokee up until Clue 7, the double division. But I'm having a little trouble with the explanations...In all honesty, I don't believe they are totally complete. Was it a coincidence that the word "fore" was used and the golf sign was on the hill? Was it a coincidence that "right zone" was used and there was no explanation as to why that was used. (I assume it was referring to the "zone sign" that had actually been taken down during the hunt. Did "aspire" actually mean nothing? How about "lucky one" used in clue one and also one more time somewhere in the clues? The word "Crack" meant nothing; true? Immeasurable riches didn't mean Joy Street? Well, maybe these are the little things that are subtle and you choose not to mention, possibly the clues for the more "involved" hunter." Well, at any rate, the hunt was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to the same degree of cleverness.
I live for chaos! To bad we didn't make it to the last clue; I was really looking forward to the pandemonium. Thanks to all at the cooler for discussions that brought me to within 30 yards of the polymer. Greg Sax and Joe Medallion (polar opposites) and many others have earned their respective places in the Watercooler scrapbook. None will be forgotten and I hope all will be back for the hunt next year.
The only problem i see with this forum is that it gives the clue writer the ability to jack in to our thought processes and predict our thinking. We must continue to strive to outsmart him/her without outsmarting and sabotaging ourselves. At the same time I predict the future will demand different levels (at least two) of hunt difficulty to keep everyone entertained, stimulated and challenged. With the collective unconscious so readily available here, it seems to have become easier to be in the right park earlier even though the clues are at least as ambiguous as preceding years. Also, as most of us were continually trying to read more into the clues than we were suppose and/or meant to, we clearly have an appetite for something a bit more (intellectually) challenging, maybe we should ask for a more stimulating hunt from the press, at least one for the kiddies, newbies, last day hunters and Joe M. and one for thinking folk. One prize for $$$ and one for prestige?
and another thing -- did the extremely fortunate duo really find the great prize without the help of a Magic Frisbee? I can't understand how that could possibly have happened.
I just want to say that I am disappointed that nobody from the Water Cooler found the medallion! Okay, Okay, I guess that's misdirected disappointment - I really disappointed that now I have to get back to work. Actually, it's a good thing, the piles on my desk are threatening to spillover into my neighbor's area! And to think our cubes surround me with 4 feet high walls - that's a lot of paper! Sigh, guess I'll get hopping. Water Coolers live on...
I just want to congratulate Maureen and say I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on Sunday at 11:30! Are we supposed to bring anything? I didn't get all the details. Are we wearing anything special? Will Joe be there? :-)
Coffee for all will be provided. Bring whatever you wish to eat/grill. Besides the grills at The Park, at least two Coleman stoves will be available.
Attire is digger wear - warm clothes. The CC identifier of something white and typically non-winterish (towel around leg, diaper on head, tube sox on arm, golf hat, etc.) is encouraged, but is opptional. (I'll be in my white golf hat that says, "PPMCC Member/I'm WAY COOLER'UN YOU! HAIL COOLER HAND LUKE!" The printing is green, natch!)
If you wish to bring additional items to share - one person is bringing an extra steak or two, there may be some danish and bagels, etc. - please do if you wish. This is not required.
Over the last few years of hunting I have tried to keep this in mind.
"Don't read too much into the clues." After seeing this years explanations I guess I should have. Clue #5. The Wyoming with Yellowtone Park is a state not a city!
Well I had to come and see what everyone's been saying since yesterday afternoon. Now it's back to work as usual - until Sunday morning, anyway. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone! I haven't been back to CP to find "the spot", but I'll check it out on Sunday. A sock, eh? A bit weak, if you as me. Oh and Doc, just FYI, apparently there is a Wyoming, MN. I posted the same observation as you when the clue was being discussed, as was quickly informed.

Samsa: Are you aware of the get-to-gether Sunday? The First Annual PPMCC Re-Hash Bash at CP???? Know about it??? Gonna be there???
Did they say whether or not the sock was buried? Or just hung in a bush? Did we did all this time for nothing?
oops, that should read "dig", not "did."
Don't think so, Hick, even as much as I would like to see it happen. Thing is with something like the Cooler - it's *supposed* to be just one giant thread.

Said it was found yards from the "crack" tree. Probably was buried.
green?? still online???
Yea, giddy. We need to xplain to Hick about the other topics in the other Coolers and that the Med may be gone, but we can still gather and pick each other's brains as
green . gotta think you're a fellow techie. I'm a MCSE. Word up?

Back to the "sure spot" theorem. Did anyone else line up the NSP stack with the parks and rec "Pyramids" and follow the line back to the trees??
Howdy, me and the hubby created a t-shirt and wore it last night. It has the open mouthed face guy on it put thru some different effects. It says "Cooler Crew '98" on it. We also made badges using the graphics we had for our names. I'm a graphic designer and could make other stuff too! Hope to see you at the bash
green- need to know what to bring sunday. Thinking bagels or doughnuts. Help please...

Yeppers, I follwed that line for a while...and if you were in between the trees just right you could see one of the domes too.
Casey just mentioned a chat room...although that would have been nice to have, I'm really glad we had the board. It was nice to be able to go through the messages before or after going out. I'm afraid that might be lost with a chat room.
Green, and other coolers....Just got home.....Need to review what's happened since the am.
Good point Allie...the chat room would be a better idea 2 days before and after the hunt perhaps.
I lost track of where I was digging..at one point I had things lined up...I was so very very close to that spot..and only a few minutes away from reaching it..problem was, it was gone and I didn't know it.
ANY word on if/when they might take this down????
I agree Hick...two days before and then after it's found so everyone can grieve together.
Yes...Casey said it would stay until it slowed down and then moved to another place..but it would still be up.
Casey T: An admirable job on the Med cooler all-around. Take a night
off and get wild! Give us the email for the top dog and we'll put you
in for a MEDal -- (I couldn't resist that one.. ;^) )
Green are you still here?
Ok, nite all, thanks to all that participated that are still around here, I would still be digging in Prospect if it wasn't for all the help I found here. KCT, great job, keep it up.
Hick-out...not up ;)
Cheryl, last time green posted was about 10:15. Probably fell asleep at the keyboard.
If you haven't already seen the treasure map on the "Winter Carnival Page" click on "Where, exactly, was it?" Sure makes it look easy, but we all know it was anything but.
Eagle Eye, Thanks for the info. It sure looks easy. Sure wasn't. I guess that's what gives us all the "fever".
Got to hit the sack. Goodnight all.
Goodnight Casey. I think we're the only ones left here, for tonight! Don't work too hard. Goodnight CoolerPhiles, wherever you are!
I just wanted to say that I've lived in Minnesota for only four years now and have never been interested in looking for the medallion until I stumbled upon the Water Cooler.

This time of year??? Maybe it's just been hibernating on you since last summer! :-)
