I'm extremely impressed with all of you!!!! Last year on this posting board we had about 400 postings! This year we had over 7500 WOW! Good job of communication to lead the lucky duo that found it to the spot. I'd expect even more clue solving posts next year!!!!! Greg Sax hang in there, one of these years it will be our turn.
SueBee & Doc, FYI - Wyoming is off 35E, north of the Hugo/Forest Lake area. Just so ya know!
And AllieGo, I agree with you - it's hard to believe ALL those words meant nothing, when we had so many meanings for them! I guess we're just too quick for our own good!
I was stuck here in Chicago this year and did not make the trip to St. Paul. I had no idea how much this would bother me especially after missing the first 5 clues! Irritation was the word.
Last year at least I made it back to dig in Como for fours days. I will not make the mistake of not making the trip again.
Anyway, I was reading Mr. Sax's comments about people in WI not understanding this obsession. This is even more true in Chicago where I get these blank stares every hour I was checking the website yesterday about news from Cherokee. I think my fellow employees were glad when the medallian was finally found.
I emailed several friends in MPLS to encocurage them to dig. They replied that that was a "good idea" but they dont know St. Paul and would not make the trip. I am from MPLS too, but have joined the obsession for the last 7 years. Why dont they get this?
Well, I will remember my experiences with Cherokee in 92 when I dragged a green blanket out of the river during my lunch hour because it "used to get someone warm and dry" That was my first experience and I wasnt even close to Cherokee park! Live and learn
Enjoy your picnic. I wish that I could meet you all. I definately will make the trip next year unless I end up in Korea or something.
Hello everyone. My congratulations to the finders. The newspaper article mentioned that Steve attributed the finding of the medallion to "dumb luck", hogwash! Steve, you had a plan that was solid and fit the clues, you executed that plan and worked hard and got rewarded. You also read the clues right. Though not way off in reading the clues, I did tend to put too much into some of the words and phrases. Congrats to the PPMCC, you all have made this a fun year to hunt. I enjoyed reading most of the posts, I wish some would have gone away, and overall was impressed by the ability to share ideas even though it could help someone else find the treasure. I hope to see you all on Sunday. Finally, thanks to the clue writers that kept us up all night racking our brains to figure out what they were telling us, you did a great job.
It was a pleasure to see so many of you this year. I truely appreciate the nice comments about the book and plan to have a value added updated version for next year. It should be ready by December if my schedule permits. Look for it at the Hungry Mind Bookstore and the Map Store as usual. Also, feel free to e-mail me at jsrworth@aol.com.
Any ideas to help make a better product are welcome. Sponsorship, perhaps with coupon inserts would make it cheaper to produce, so any help in this area would be appreciated. I'll try to check my e-mail once a week throughout the year.
I'm putting my money on Phalen next year. See ya there.
Just wanted to add my input after reading all the cooler input. Wasn't really able to post earlier, but of course after it's all over I have the chance. I've been going over clues with y'all and even managed to dig for a few of the nights, since I only live 10 blocks away from Cherokee. I'm a life long Minneapolis gal who had always envied the diggers each year, as I knew nothing about St Paul, having just moved there this last year. But around the 6th clue, I though, hey! That sounds like the park by my house! When I was convinced it was Cherokee, I went the last couple of nights and was basically overwhelmed by the whole scene. First of all, it was at night, which is *terrible* for hunting, since you could miss anything that looks "not quite right." During the day, you definitely have the advantage.
Second of all, everything was ripped apart and looked like the surface of the moon. I didn't know where to begin! The second to last night, near midnight, someone started whooping and then everyone seemed to join in whoopin' and hollerin' and I had to just stand there and stare. It was all so weird and surreal.
I wish a could have joined in the cooler talk much earlier, but just wanted to say "hi!" and thanks for the entertainment!
I'll be at the breakfast Sunday... and checking the WC later this aft (2PM) if anyone wants to continue the postmortem....
This has been my first serious hunt and it was an adventure (like traveling, etc.) I followed the Grateful Dead for a few years (job permitting) and this is the closest I've come to feeling that 'free-wheeling sense of community and finding yourself'! Rock on my fellow Cooler-Heads and keep the feeling alive all year long!
Let me first off add my congratulations to the winners! I only hope to someday be able to experience the same excitement myself.
Although I cursed out some of the clues during the hunt, after reading the explanation I have to say they were pretty good clues. And still vague enough to keep people hunting almost to the end. I've been addicted to the hunt since 1971, when the medallion was hidden right across the street from my grade school--at Wakefield Park. My "closest call" was in 1993, when both my dad and I found a diaper blowing through Hidden Falls Park, but would not look into it for obvious reasons! Imagine how my heart sank when I heard the winner found the treasure in a diaper! Thank god THAT diaper was buried in the snow.
We were also there on Tues. nite/Wed. a.m. when people started whooping. How juvenile (and inconsiderate to all of the people on Chippewa avenue trying to sleep.)
I keep hoping each year for Phalen also, as I grew up just a couple of blocks away. I'm afraid the medallion organizers might be afraid of Phalen though, because part of it is in Maplewood, and Maplewood officials have bitched ever since the medallion was in Wakefield!
Oh well, see you all next year! (My guess--in some little dinky park, or somewhere in downtown St. Paul.)
Can't seem to stop hitting the "Recent" button every now and again. Glad to see many of you are still sharing thoughts. There's nothing wrong with a little postmortem. The good thing about the "death" that comes with the medallion find is that it's reborn every year.
I had a chance to read Jim Walsh's article on the finders of the medallion. I especially liked how Maureen Hursey said she locked herself in the truck with the medallion. What a nice moment that must've been. I also like how she thought her brother was kidding her in a sibling kind of way even though they're both in their 30s. Very nice. I haven't been this happy for the finders since Battle Creek.
I'll keep clickin' through until I hear how the shindig went on Sunday. I'll see if I can't get a couple of friends to go in my place. They hung around the Water Cooler with me when I was in town last weekend and were completely into it. Until I came home nobody was digging.....on Saturday night there were 8 of us. Part of that is thanks to the motivational waters of the Water Cooler.
Hey, I got a new motto for the PPMCC. Something catchy, retro, and easy to put on a button:
You dig?
I'll make 'em if you'll buy 'em. Take it easy, all.
I hope the folks at the Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation have taken note of all the cooler discussion. The hunt itself, and all spirit shown in the water cooler, really show what Saint Paul is all about. The whole thing reminded me of the first few years of the Saints, when people from all over Saint Paul found new friendships with others in the stands. The Saints, the medallion hunt, Grand Old Day--these things are what will keep me in Saint Paul forever.
It seems to me that the Heritage Foundation could use some new blood to increase interest in other parts of the carnival. The button designs could be a little snazzier and there could be more events that bring Saint Paulites from all walks of life together.
Update: Talked to P&R Dept. Don't need permit, don't need nuttin'! There are eight outlets at the 'mushroom', I think she called it, and all eight are working and functional.
So, it's a go for Sunday!!!!
I'll be slogging thru the posts tonite and making a list of what people will be bringing. At this writing the coffee is taken care of. If you'd like to contribute additional food, etc., e-mail me, if you would, as that would be easier for me than slogging thru posts!!!
Thanks!!! Will be back from time to time w/updates, if needed.
This hunt was the first of my married life with my new husband, the second for me total. Gosh, I thought for sure we'd find it! I was a little confused about the clues relating to the dome and a large object in view. When the dome was mentioned, I thought for sure it was the cathedral dome, as it's visible right next to the smoke stack. I thought for sure the smoke stack was the large object in view, as it's the biggest thing you can see from the park! I wish there had been a specification/clue that it was the capitol dome, not the cathedral dome. How were we supposed to figure that out??? Oh, well. It was fun. My arms are so sore from chipping snow that it's hard to type or write!
It's funny that Brad J. Brunner mentioned the St. Paul Saints here. That's my #2 St. Paul obsession and it truly allows for the St. Paul spirit to continue in the warmer months. I've slept outside of Midway Stadium for tickets twice and have been to road games in Sioux Falls and Madison. But the truly-true fan of the Saints is Bill Tyler, a very approachable man who runs a great Saints web site. The official site is also rather nice, particularly for press releases and box scores. Check these out: www.nlfan.com spsaints.com
greenslvs2: My guess is you don't really need a head count. Just from reading past posts, it sounds like you'll have as many as 20 to 30, but my guess is that people will stop by out of curiosity and won't eat/drink too much. The mushrooms at Cherokee should accommodate just fine -- even if you get 50. If people didn't mind digging alone in packed snow for hours, they won't mind standing around with a bunch of nice people. And if the gathering goes beyond your wildest expectations, there's always another trip to SA!
A good friend of mine takes vacation every year and sleeps out for tickets. As soon as the schedule is printed, she's got one and planning and figuring which games to get how many tickets for. She and her husband buy I don't know how many - she's the one that turned me on the the Saints. I've fond memories of the Futon Gallery!!!!!! LOL!!! They go on the road trips and she's a Booster, or something like that. Does a ton of stuff for them...
Thax. Will check out the sites!!!
Looking forward to seeing your friends Sunday. Really neat idea with the buttons, but we still need something logoed and the date each year that specifically ties to the PPMCC. I'm working on an idea!!!!
Greenslvs, I know you have been planning the re-hash bash, but I was wondering something and I didn't want to check through all of the old logs. Has anybody invited Casey to our bash? I think it would be neat, that is if he can come. What do you think?
Best way to thank Casey - and the entire PP - is to use and recommend the Coolers. He wanted me to "shamelessly plug them." Heck, I'm not ashamed - these things are the greatest thing since the invention of the 'puter!!! - and have been telling everyone at work how neat they are. I hope you all will do the same.
Besides, we can continue to meet there [in the other Coolers] and discuss those topics together.
Tho, you've my word that I will NOT push "Tom Clancy" logo-wear, buttons, paraphinalia, get togethers, etc!!!!! LOL!!!
Hey Greenslvs2 - you're a good leader! I plan on bringing a dozen polish sausage, buns and mustard to Sunday's gig. I don't know what a mushroom is but I plan on looking for people near the firepit. Thanks again for the organizational effort, I too feel a kinship and sense of comraderie!
Hi gang. I double that, Greenslvs. Thanks so much for the effort to put together the bash on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it. I'll bring a couple bags of chips. The commaraderie and social aspect of the cooler has been wonderful. People can be so cynical and suspicious these days; it's nice to know there are fun, friendly, cool people out there. We'll have to get together for a Saints game this summer. I have to confess, I've never been to one. They sound like a blast though. And I'd purchase PPCC paraphenalia too! I like the "You Dig?" idea.
Hollywood, SueBee - (((((((()))))))'s to you guys!!! You two are WAY TOO COOLER ahead of me!!! I've started my list of what's coming - put you two down, so you don't have to e-mail me.
I'm bringing potatoe salad. Here are other things I thought of if someone wants to bring:
We could use 1.5 doz ears of corn (to be cut into thirds); I've a big kettle to cook them in.
Somebody want to bring baked beans?
Deviled egss - LOTS OF WORK!!! :( - is another idea.
Again, there will be coffee for everyone. But, basically, bring what you'll need for *your* needs - plates, utensils, food, etc. Again, anything else is xtra....
Looks this is gonna be a great initial Re-Hash Bash!!! I can't wait!!
Now you don't really mean that ATBF do you? After all, wouldn't that crush you if you are down on the riverbank, smoking pot and sniffin' Testors rubber cement with trash can man and joe-joe?
Will someone please tell me when the party is? It will be important to contact Guiness before hand so they will be there to do a head count on what promises to be the largest congregation of dorks ever.
Ah, thats sad to hear Holly, but do all of the coolers know about the pic-a-nic? cuz alot of them havent posted anything since monday or early tuesday thinking this is over, and its far from over. oh yes, we wont let the hunt die.
As I've said before, I've been reading this religiously since last week and I have to say that 99.5% of the people posting sound very nice and seem to be really enjoying themselves -- why is it that some people have to come on here and act like complete idiots? I realize that right now I'm stooping to their level but it really pisses me off. Anyway, greenslvs2, Greg Sax, Sue Bee and so on -- thanks for letting me read with you these past couple of weeks. I found myself wrapped up in this medallion thing for the first time! I hope you all have a wonderful time at your bash. (as you can tell, I'm still addicted because I keep hitting "recent")
For anyone not soggin' through ALL old messages, check out message 7523 for details about the first annual PPCC Re-hash Bash at Cherokee park on Sunday, Feb. 8 1998 starting at 11:30pm. Be there or be un-cool!!
It's hard to break the habit, isn't it? What do I have to live for after today? Oh yeah! NEXT YEAR! Maybe Silver Lake Park . . . Desnoyer . . . Arlington Fields . . . Sylvan??? The possibilities are endless!
Me too, Shelly. I'm addicted. I've been out hunting a couple of times in the past (I was at Hidden Falls the night before the medallion was found in '93 -ooh so close) and hung out in the cooler last year too, but this is my first die-hard, get out there and dig till your arms fall off year. I loved it. I have to be honest and say my boyfriend did most of the hard work wielding the long handled ice scraper, but I held a mean flashlight for him!
Big Money - I was about that far away on Tuesday night myself. Ah, so close but yet too far! Next year....
Allie Go: I do think that "crack" meant something...just not what we thought. The word was printed on that damn tree near the medallion.
I'm extremely impressed with all of you!!!! Last year on this posting board we had about 400 postings! This year we had over 7500 WOW! I will do my best to make it to the re-hash. On a very tight schedule Sunday. Hope to see yall there.
Is there a kind soul out there that's willing to slog and try and get a count for Sunday, so that *I* don't have to????? :)
It's funny that Brad J. Brunner mentioned the St. Paul Saints here. That's my #2 St. Paul obsession and it truly allows for the St. Paul spirit to continue in the warmer months. I did, A. Let me slog a minute and I'll find his reply that I forwarded!!! I'm still hoping he makes it!!
Are you going to post it here or send it to my e-mail?
All: A copy of Casey's answer to invite...
greenslvs2 - 08:02pm Feb 4, 1998 CST (#7393 of 7555)
All PPMCC Members... I've just had my heart touched by an angel...
You know that we HAD to have caused the PP a bunch a probs with our enjoyment and fun of this particular Cooler, what
with clogging up the server constantly, etc... And you KNOW what a dear Casey was to us - always honest, rite there when
we needed him, always cheerful, willing to help and soothe our feathers when we got riled by something/someone...
So, I privately invited him to The First Annual PPMCC Re-Hash Bash. Well, like, if he's not a member with all he's done/did
for us... Then none of us are members!!!
This is what Casey replied:
"greenslvs2,
Thanks for the invite. I'm sure my ability to attend will depend entirely on my ability to recover from my Saturday night poker
game.
Anyway, the massive participation in the Water Cooler has been quite the buzz around the PP. And if I can't come, please
extend my thanks to the PPWCC for a fun and lively discussion board.
Cheers,
Casey Trauer Planet night editor"
Nice guy, Casey. Let's all hope he makes it Sunday!!!!
Thought my fellow members would be proud - wanted to forward it on to you.
Green
Best way to thank Casey - and the entire PP - is to use and recommend the Coolers. He wanted me to "shamelessly plug them." Heck, I'm not ashamed - these things are the greatest thing since the invention of the 'puter!!! - and have been telling everyone at work how neat they are. I hope you all will do the same.
Besides, we can continue to meet there [in the other Coolers] and discuss those topics together.
Tho, you've my word that I will NOT push "Tom Clancy" logo-wear, buttons, paraphinalia, get togethers, etc!!!!! LOL!!!
Greg: This whole hunt, Cooler, input, commaraderie, humor, intelligence, logo-wear, get-to-gether-thingy, etc., has already gone beyond my wildest expectations!!!
In this day and age, most folks are so appethetic and refuse to get involved in anything. But not here!!! Not PPMCC Members!!! Not us guys!!!
This is the greatest!!!
Oh, come on now. Slam
Greg, I want four buttons.
Greg - It would be nice if you could get the buttons by Sunday - but I'm sure this would be too soon. But, I'd like 2 of them! See ya then!
Hey Ian,
I like the 'VINYLagain' page!....know of any other medallion pages???
Now you don't really mean that ATBF do you? After all, wouldn't that crush you if you are down on the riverbank, smoking pot and sniffin' Testors rubber cement with trash can man and joe-joe?
Leave ATBF alone! He's my neighbor, and I know that he's a really good guy!
How close were all of you with your guesses? I was a measly 5 yards away from the darn thing!
Actually Mr. Wood at that particular time I was planning on doing my ritual smoking and sniffing by your Mama's house.
Will someone please tell me when the party is? It will be important to contact Guiness before hand so they will be there to do a head count on what promises to be the largest congregation of dorks ever.
My mom died of cancer 12 years ago Mr. ATBF....
