1998 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Hunt for the Pioneer Press medallion!

The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.

The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

SueBee

Wonder if they'll ever not hide it in a major park again. I was reading some of the old spots - 35E and Victoria, the bottom of a mailbox at 7th and Robert - TOO FUNNY! Can you just imagine all 300 of us stopping downtown traffic to dig around mailboxes? I suppose the hunt has become so big now that they have to plan to accomodate all those cars and bodies.

No, I don't think they'll do that again. But I'd like to see it in a smaller park next year.

I used to search for the truth and the light in the Cooler. Last year at Como I was logged on often and constructively at that; even this year for that matter. Now ,however, I 've become an evil disciple of Joe Medallion. I've changed my name too in the Islamic sense. His teachings guide me.

Right on, Shelly!

SueBee, where did you find the list of past hiding spots? I saved one from the 93 paper but of course, it's now out of date. Re. the medallion hid underneatht the mailbox @ 7th and Robert, that was well (or at least a bit!) before I was born, but my parents have told me the story of how when the lady found it, she went screaming up 7th st. on her way to the paper, and almost got mugged by some kids! I also recall the same thing happening when I was 10 years old in 1971, when an old guy found the medallion tied to a buried wagon wheel in Wakefield Park. Some kids chased him up the HUGE hill and he just barely got away! And we think kids today are the only bad ones! I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same!

Q: What's the difference between "Aint Talking Bout Fontana" and an anal polyp?

A: The anal polyp has someone who cares about it!

davidm did something a few posts back that I was hoping to see at this point. He gave a couple of stories from past hunts. If you have anything you can remember reading or seeing with your own eyes, please share.

upallnight: I, too, would like to see a chat forum for this, but I worry that we wouldn't be able to, as greenslvs2 puts it, "slog" through old messages or do a "Search" on names. Granted, there's always going to be those who post blindly, but having the option to go back and read the thread (like with newsgroups) saves the conversation from become hackneyed. Ideally, I would like to see both a chat room and a continuation of this newsgroup-like Water Cooler. That way we can talk fast right when the clues come out (chat) and get a little more perspective when the fury has subsided (Cooler).

For us, the "hunt" is a family activity. My wife and two sons (11 and 15)are sometimes even more avid than me.We really became hooked when it was at Highland and have been in the game ever since.

Greensleeves 2, or Greg Sax, or whoever did you ever get the name of the guide book for the medallion hunt? I'd like to get it but don't know where.

If you still need someone to bring bake beans put me down for them.

Greg: You're so succint. I love it as I'm verbose!!! I think what you're asking is going to come to pass over this coming year - Casey said that he'd be willing to give us space to like, chat (not a direct quote - my interpertation) and the PP would would be brain-dead NOT to have another PPMWC next year. It sounds to me that we'll even be able to talk like during this summer to schedule the Pre-Hunt get-togeher, etc., in the chat area for the Med Hunt. I think... Been slogging... and ingested lots of info.

FYI... have noted things I want to print and read or have the writer read Sunday. Will go back and get the "stories."

Can you do a Web page for us where we can consolidate all the Med Hunt stuff????

Nd:

The first one is called "The Official 1987 Winter Carnival Treasure

Hunters Guide. Clues, locales, etc from 1952 thru 1986. Written,

edited and published by Kirk D. and Lori Larson. Looks rather low

budget but good information. There is a note on the front cover

"Proceeds to support future Winter Carnival Activities"

The second one is the "ST. PAUL PARKS A Treasure Hunter's Guide 1996"

It's copyrighted - 1995 Hunter's Press ($8.00)

Hunter's Press, 2141 Palace Ave., St. Paul, MN 55105

The tag from the Hungry Mind Book Store has Worthman,S. The same steve

worthman from the Cooler.

Didn't he say he was updating or had updated it? Included are rec

centers where it has never been hidden and includes none of the Ramsey

County Parks. Decent maps too. Found a few errors but is a decent

resource.

ND, the above is from one of us.... Terry Valentime, I'm pretty sure. Me and C, and Black Widow are going to study this summer!!! That's why I asked for the info. Hope it helps you!!!

If any Members want to bring something to share, think summer:

1.5 doz ears of corn on the cob. They can be cut in thirds to go around. I've a big kettle to cook them in.

Deviled eggs, tho really time consuming. But, it's an idea!

MARSHMELLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE NEED MARSHMELLOWS!!!!

I will be bringing my red tobbagan to transport stuff. The kids (no matter age!!! LOL!!!) are free to use it on the "zoom" hill if they want. More sleds/tobbagans and we can have races!

I will bring some charcol, tho we may need more. I will also have trash bags... and will be picking up the CRAP everyone left while hunting. Feel free to give me a hand if ya'wanna.

Let me know if I've forgotten anything and if you wanna contribute.

It's gonna be SO MUCH FUN!!!!

Wright: You don't have to bring a thing. It's only if you want. What's more important is that *you* are there. Cheryl told me that she met you and that you're... ah... well... younger than the adults. So, boyo!!! just make sure YOU'RE THERE and don't worry about bringing anything but your happy face and humor and whit!!

Hey gang, I seem to be afflicted with RoBBeD syndrome, or Recent Button Bungled Digit syndrome. If it had to go, it seems it went to good folks! Now, I sits, and I thinks....I have no purpose, no goals. Back to icefishing I guess. Looking----> to Sunday. I'll bring...I'm not sure what I'll bring. Consider it a surprise (fish anyone?). B.

I been sitting and thinking...I work p-time for a seafood distrib guy, and it seems the snow crab season started about two weeks ago in Alaska. Better than eelpout. No promises, but I'll see what I can do (he owes me!).

Eelpout hugs you, tho. Never been hugged by a fish. Want to do the eelpout thing up north - at least once. LOVE to fish... AND EAT IT... (hint, hint, hint) Headlines will read next day:

greenslvs2: If I'm to make buttons -- and believe me, I can have them ready for the rehash bash -- I need to know what to put on them. I still can't really tell what we're calling ourselves. I've seen you use PPMCC and PPWCC in your past posts (go ahead and slog now if you don't remember). Actually, I think both are a mouthful, but I was never really into WATER COOLER CREW either. I can deal with the letters though -- just tell me if the middle letter is "M" or "W". I'm pretty sure it's "M".

"You dig?" will center the button, but I'd like to put the acronym and full name (It stands for Pioneer Press Medallion Cooler Crew, right?) with the year on it. Color is expensive, so I'd like to keep it all black-and-white, which should be fine since white is our primary color anyway.

So have we taken this thing too far yet? Sure. But that's the fun, ain't it?

This book that keeps coming up -- the '87 Treasure Guide -- I knew about it, but I could never find it. It was published for the Winter Carnival Association, that's about all the further I got with it. As I recall, it's not at any of the local libraries. Could be wrong.

Here...let me start a new post...

Have to see what this graphic looks like -- I'm sure it's pretty dorky, but OH WELL!! Bad news -- my parents say they can't find their coffee urns. I feel really bad since I sort of already committed. They're in their 70's (no offense if anyone is approaching the "golden years") and it seems they are misplacing more and more things. Even worse, they live in a HUGE house in crocus hill absolutely filled with, well a little of everything, I guess. Anyway, I'm rambling. I can for sure bring a bunch of coffee cups. (I know I have those!) I am still trying to locate a coffee urn from my parents' church, it's a long shot, but what the heck?

Thu, 02/05/1998 - 8:04 PM Permalink
greensIvs2

I've never (unless brain-dead) used "PPWCC." Snot me! I truly, in my heart, feel that we should be "PPMCC" to distinguish us from the other Coolers that the PP has for other topics over the year. We, the "M" Cooler, are the only Cooler that will be returning on a yearly basis, not to mention we're about (Please, Casey!!!) to have our own chat room. IMNSHO, it cannot be anything BUT PPMCC. However, do put it to a vote of the rest of the Crew if you feel that necessary. I will bow to the majority.

Greenslvs2 - have the ice breaker ready for Sunday. Would like to e-mail to you as an attachment from Word 7.0. Don't even know if it's possible. Does anyone know how???? Worked on it when I first got home and couldn't tie up the phone line at the Cooler.

Saw the honorarium - thanks.

Got an e-mail from Casey. He says his boss is quite interested in the
