1998 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Hunt for the Pioneer Press medallion!

The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.

The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

Eags

What help is needed to make the next event happen? Do we need a meeting, somewhere warm? Meetings sound so stuffy, though. Maybe we should just call all planning gatherings "picnics" or "parties" or something.

Working on getting info from Greg about the Schnell (I *think* that's the brewery) tour/Med hunt they have. Also would like to set up a murder/mystery dinner to "hone" our skills... Well, at least mine!!! LOL!!! I figure any practice is good practice!

Thanks for the compliments, Green. I learned how to stay calm when I had a really mean boss. Also, have raised two boys to adulthood, so have had lots of practice at giving the appearance of being calm. Not always so underneath.

Hi all! Been slogging through todays postings. It's slowing down a bit, but wholly cow!!! a lot of ideas (some crazier than others) are flying through here.

The name thing...Club Med is cute but we can't use it. Would be confusing anyway. Maybe something with a planet theme? an internet theme? cyberspace? I think I used up my creativity today at work. It doesn't seem like it should be so hard. We ARE, after all, a very clever, creative crew. Look at all the ways we tore apart the clues. Maybe something with a snow or winter sport theme?

Let's keep thinking!

Hi, Ter! Tons of pot-salad left, want some??? Folks picked up on the VALENTINE cookies; meant to tell you that sooner.

Would'a thought Ian would be here...

Just FYI, I don't like "Crewe" as it makes me think of the Vulcans. Don't think we gotta/need ride their coat tails... Yust MHO.

Green - the mouth is hilarious!!! And the tongue has returned!

Ian - love the new picture!

Eagle Eye - My 2 kids are also over 18. I know exactly what you mean about the calm exterior even when everything seems to be blowing up.

Gonna throw this out - I keep thinking about planet things. Men are from Mars - Women are from Venus. Pluto and the digging. The red planet and white medallion. The rings of Saturn. UGHHHH!!!!

Terry, the Med is "blue" not white.

Ian, like what you've done to your Web page. Gotta go back, here, to get the full extent of it. My confuser at work won't let me see too much. (sigh)

At the risk of incurring Greg's rath (why should I worry now??? He's found he can trip my switches and is enjoying it and getting his "digs" in [Why me, god? why me???])... I'm going to be ELITIST and keep my old, worn out "Geenslvs2." Everybody's done a good job of just calling me "Green" and that's nice. Besides, if The Foo Sh!ts, Wear It. I R Green.

My fellow Water Coolerians: Ask not what your CoolerHeads can do for you, but ask what you can do for your CoolerHeads. I refer you to Green's posts #8094, #8106, and #8107 for 7 tasks that need doing. Green: I stand ready to help. Well, actually I sit ready to help.

Green - Priority #1 - Being the planet has found a new advertising gimmick for their needs, maybe they would consider setting up a home page for us to post news about gatherings, events, logo-ed wear, etc. Greg has such a nice way with words, if he would like to take that on, fantastic. If not, we can revisit this priority.

Priority #2 - St. Patty's Day Parade, Grand Ol Days, etc. etc. would be fun. St. Patrick's Day is on a Tuesday. How many could get off work to attend? Grand Ol Days is always on a Saturday in June (the first I think. That would seem more likely to allow a number of us to be there.

Priority #2 part b. If Greg agrees to be the words - the sponsorship and arrangement thing could be talked about then.

Priority #3 - Advertising through the our home page at the planet would be most accessible. Perhaps some print ads in the paper could be done too. Local community papers often advertise for little or nothing. Would they advertise this???

Priority #4 - Some of this could be done on a rotating basis. That way no one person would have all the work. Or we could divide and conquer. I can certainly help.

#5 - Volunteering - Does the paper participate in county fairs too?!? Another question for our Wizards of ???

#6 Let's see where this goes before we apply for non-profit status though the idea of doing community good appeals to me. Maybe computers for seniors so they can join in the hunt, even if they can't get out to hunt anymore.

#7 - Another question for the PP. - Greg? Are you willing???

Yes, I know the medallion is blue.

Terry: Great ideas! I especially like the idea of computers for seniors so they can join the hunt. My dad would have loved to do that, God rest his soul! Someone's earlier idea of computers for kids is also great - get the next generation excited about this kind of thing. Another idea that was mentioned earlier is that of doing Water Cooler demos at the State Fair. Way too awesome!

Great job, Ter. Will print and ponder. Thing is, lots now will have to be kind'a changed since we're not going to be *directly* under the PP umbralla. The NPO bit *may* move in priorities... Will have to see. Thanks so much for putting in your .25 worth. Will digest later when...

a) have not had a work day that started at 6:00 a.m.

b) couldn't go home to sleep, but had to bowl

c) went into tonite with a 127 ave and bowled a 141, 180, and 130...

c) inbibed as much :)

(still wondering how I pulled that 180 off...)

If we CoolerPhiles paired off, and each pair took two events to chair, that could be the key to another kind of double division.

Green: You're welcome. I should have slogged to find out whose ideas those were, but I should have known. By the way, with that post, you just hit #500! Thanks for all your contributions. I mean that. No need to be embarrassed at all.

The idea of seniors getting computers appeals to me for a couple of reasons. They are often quite isolated and can't get out during the winter. Even if a high-rise had a couple computers with internet ability, many seniors could enjoy surfing.

My mom has gotten to be quite a cyber senior. Most seniors can't afford computers - but if they had access, they could learn.

Many programs offer help getting computers into schools. Though more are always needed. The senior link would be a bit unique. Like us???

Yes, we could do it. There is quite an interest. Actually had a gentleman from the Pioneer Press come give a demo to seniors about a year ago about the internet. The demo was well attended and the seniors were fascinated.

Could be another intergenerational activity. School kids teaching seniors. One of the best ways to learn is by teaching. We could make all sorts of connections.
