Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

Well I just slogged through most of the messages from since I left this morning. I headed out to Merriam going by Newell because with the route I took it was basically on the way. I saw the TreasureHuntersGuide there selling guides along with several other people in the park. I pulled in briefly just to let him know he was in the wrong park, (hehe). Then I went on to Merriam. Not entirely sure but I think I got there around 11am. I looked around for a bit, talked to a couple of women searching through the leaves along the fence by the schhol. I was convinced by today's clue that the Medallion was disguised as something, quite likely a rock, so I was primarily looking for rocks. I had a suspicion that the "be fair" phrase might have somehow been meant to imply that the tresure would be found somewhere in the rectangle marked out by the fair territory of the two softball fields (which it was, whether that was an intentional clue or not). But I figured if it was in a rock and it was laying out there, such a rock would have to be big enough to rise above the snow and I wasn't seeing any such thing. I started walking back towards the hockey rinks, crossing over the infield to get there. That was probably the closest I got to it today, but unlike some other people, I didn't kick it up (probably because by this time it was already gone.)

As I walked over to the rinks I saw the film crew had arrived. They asked why I didn't call them. I figured I was going to be out there all day, and I could just call them later. I kind of felt like starting the day with a little private hunting time to just be able to look around and think. But as long as they were there I figured I'd let them talk to me. So I reiterated some of my ideas of why I was there and how being there in the daylight was different from being there at night. I decided to abandon the fair territory idea for a while and searched through the leaves by the fence, again hoping to turn up an unusual rock that others may have ignored. They filmed that for a while and then did some general shots of the park. Meanwhile I found a pile of infield dirt, also known as diamond dust and started to wonder if maybe that could have been the subject of today's clue? Surely though they wouldn't have expected anyone to dig up this pile? But maybe there was an unusual clump of the stuff to be found so I poked through there for a while and that ended up getting filmed also. Then they took off for Como.

I did find one rock near that pile, frozen to the ground, and about the size and shape needed to contain the Medallion. It took some work but I managed to pry it from the ground. I studied it for a while, then tried to break it open. No luck though. It seemed to really be a rock. But what if it wasn't really just a rock? I picked it up again and put it in my pocket. If one of the later clues said it was in a rock, well then at least I would have that rock handy.

I gave up on the diamond dust and headed back towards the hill. Surely time and tide must have had some more significant meaning. Something that could be found at the bottom of the hill. But I didn't see anything. I climbed up the hill and sat on the bench for a while, scanning the fields looking for an inspiration. But the only thing that occured to me was to maybe go check the other side of the hill and see what was over there. Went down there and found nothing promising. Then I thought I'd go check around the parking lot. Maybe they mentioned it for a reason. On the way I found a bit of concrete. It was much bigger than my rock. I checked it over, but it seemed to be a genuine piece of concrete. It had rust stains on it that seemed to be more than a couple of weeks old so I decided to not try and fit that in my pocket. It weighed maybe 10 lbs so that was probably a good decision on my part.

So I walk around on the sidewalk, going down Wilder until I get to the parking lot. There was a green side at the entrance that said "Merriam Park". The sign above the door of the building read "Merriam Park Community Center". At the end of the parking lot was a wooden sign that also said "Merriam Park" and to the right of that was another door, above which read "Merriam Park Recreation Center". Seemed to be a good sign that I was in the right place. I saw a woman in the parking lot getting into a van. I figured she must have been going to the community center and probably thought I was crazy for carrying around a shovel.

She asked me if I thought the Medallion was here. I said I did. Then she said she didn't think so. Apparently she was a hunter after all. Then she said it didn't feel right there. She said her mother had come up with a much better explanation for "in and on the air" but she didn't want to tell me what it was because she knew I would get online and tell everyone else. Well, apparently she knew who I was even if I wasn't sure who she was. She did say her favorites were Linwood, Palace, and St. Clair. I said I was still convinced it was right here. She said no, she felt pretty confident it wasn't, and then we said good bye and she left. I guess in a way she was right. It wasn't at Merriam, it was at the Pioneer Press office.

So then I get past the parking lot and close to the ice rink. There's some snow there and I think it's a possibility it could be here. I see another pile of diamond dust and ponder it. Then a man comes up to me. He seems to know me and says we met at the Newell Pity party, though I can't say I remember him offhand (apparently my memory isn't what it used to be, but then I did turn 34 at the start of the hunt. Getting old)

He asked me if I had heard anything about it being found. Of course my first reaction is, what a strange question to ask. With all these people still around, why would he think it had been found? He said he had a cell phone, but didn't have the number handy. I happened to have my clipped clues in my vest pocket (I was all ready to find it today) and the number was on there. He dialed it and said he couldn't get through. So I pulled out my cell phone. The time on it said 12:33. I called and did get through. Did they really say it had been found? It's over already? But they said it was found at Merriam on the baseball fields. Well, I may not have gotten the big prize, but at least I got the park right this year and wouldn't have to worry about looking stupid like last year.

So I picked up my shovel and decided I might as well go get some lunch. I told some people on the way it had been found. Then I saw a bunch standing in the middle of the baseball fields and figured I should tell them. But it seemed they already knew and were really just there to console themselves. I joined them and we talked for a bit.

As we stood around talking I saw a woman and her teenage son just walk on by us. It gets sort of fuzzy and dream like at that point. Somehow we knew that these people were the finders, and somehow we drifted from the middle of the fields to the spot where it had been found. The film crew was back along with cameras from the local news. The finders showed us where they had found it. And then I realized the son was not just holding the thing it had been found in, but the Medallion itself!

There it was, the near-mythical object looking to be about 2 1/2" in diameter and 1/2" think. Not quite how I pictured it. And it was bluer than I thought, yet the shade of blue seemed to somehow embody the spirit of a cold winter's day. I could see the design on the front of it, I was that close to it. And it was still attached to what it had been found with. It was the disposable aluminum cover that one might find on something like a can of Pringles, though apparently it came from a can of Wahoos. It was taped to the back of the Medallion, though the son was able to remove it pretty easily and stick it back on at will. Then someone suggested they let Green hold it and they did. She may not have found it, but she did get to touch it. She said it felt almost weightless.

They told us the story of how they went out there. The mother has been hunting for years, the son for at least 4. They thought the clues fit the park and decided to come and take a look. The mother said they were just there to scout but the son said he was actually looking. They had been there for about 20 minutes and the son was just kicking up snow when all of a sudden the medallion went flying.

They turned it in, though they did not get their button registered this year. They always had in the past, but they somehow missed the deadline this year. (I believe the last couple of years you could still register your button up through the day before the carnival started which would have been the day of the 5th clue. But this year it was before the hunt started, and I think the earlier date threw a lot of people who thought they had more time). Someone asked them why they didn't just find someone who did have a button. They said a) it wouldn't have seemed honest and b) everyone they knew also missed the deadline.

Then they headed off again as they had to get to the press conference. Some people stood around a while longer and talked. I ended up staying until 3:30 talking to various people and telling others that it was too late. Some already knew and had just come by to see where it had been, so I pointed out the spot for them. No one was really happy about it, but at least it was a reason to party. Everyone headed to Gabe's and partied for a while. Such was my day. Not that the night was any less strange, but I doubt you want to hear about that.

I wish to congratulate the finder(s) of this year's medallion. I suppose the beauty of having it found so early is that the recreational weekend hunter hadn't gotten out of bed yet. And by definition only a devout hunter could have found it on the afternoon of clue #6. But at the same time, I feel cheated and feel as though I need to, for lack of a better word, reprimand the Pioneer Press for allowing it to be found so soon and, from all accounts, randomly. I'm sure from their (Pioneer Press') viewpoint, this hunt has been a colossal failure, as this is a business venture for them and they failed to allow the hunt to go to the "target market" time (this Saturday and Sunday). Think of how many fewer newspapers will be sold, and thus how many advertisers will be upset that people were not standing in line this weekend to see their ad (along with the clue, by the way). Keeping in mind how many fewer people there will be with shovel in hand at Como Park (and elsewhere) that just happen to take in some Winter Carnival Activities while they're there.

I challenge you, Pioneer Press... we are a more formittable opponent now. We have more brains on the chat board posting (mostly useful) ideas about where the medallion is hidden. We have a gentleman who has devoted countless hours of making a guide-book about this winter reality-break we all hold so near and dear to our hearts-- and we all own it. We are more informed, more connected and better educated about where the medallion could be. Can you meet our challenge to keep it hidden?

Here is my Two Cents worth....... Next year everyone should BOYCOTT,BOYCOTT,BOYCOTT These clues have absolutely sucked, where is the intellect, the creativity, SHERLOCK. Clue #6 finally gave me the feeling that there was some depth involved in this after all, but of coure i was wrong. "IDIOTS" How stupid could you be ? They knew well in advance there was going to be little snow, how come the Puck wasn't in clay or dirt, or in some weed clump ? The last three years have sucked BAD, and this year tops the list. There's always next year you say......We have been saying that year after year....I DON'T THINK SO......I think everyone should give money to Allison and he can start the "HUNT FOR THE INTELLIGENT PEOPLE", by the intelligent people.

Not the clue writters fault no snow, but they should have hid it better. We got the park form sledding, trees, and a radio tower that is amazing!!! We all should be congraduated for doing such a great job..although most of the later clues that we didn't see sucked. I'll bring Grisham hot dogs for the kiddo's

Actually, I believe, the later clues would not have driven masses to Merrium Park. Probably Como! In retrospect...I think they did a fairly good job. Lots o people were out hunting the last several days...but not too many at Merriam. Had it not been for this board...there may have been even less there.

The one thing I definitely would have done different is I would have said "Ramsey County holds the bounty" instead of "a St. Paul Park". Would have spread them out even further!

Yes, lurkers are welcome. There are some people this year who have been lurkers previously, but became more involved, and I think they all have enjoyed "coming to our side". As for myself, I'm thinking of making chocolate "chip on my shoulder" cookies, since they seemed to go over well last year.
