The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.
The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...
Terry
More ramblings - sorry - There is also the talk of logo-ed wear somewhere in all this. The planet is in our corner I do believe. They can be our allies in all this. We can ask them for ideas as well. Afterall, they name these discussion boards all the time. It's their day job!
BeeyoB - the common thread that brought us here is our obsession with little blue things in white snow that can be talked about here because we have access by computer.
Logoed-wear is the LAST priority. We've too much else to get done to worry about that at this time. First and foremost, we need a HOME - Web page, and a posting area... and at least access to a chat room, say, once a month.
Terr, NADA on the closeness to the Ppress. Eligibility is stated in the Rules, and until that changes, I'm gonna utilize the net (and the cooler) for all it's worth. Due to the situation, I feel we will always be affiliated with the Ppress, it's their game after all is said and done.
BeeyoB - I agree about the link to the planet. This is their game and ours for that matter.
One of the other things that brought us here is the $4000 prize and the desire to be the ones riding in the parade.
The logo-ed wear is not top priority tonight - but to be kept in mind. The PP may be interested as a source of 1. advertisement 2. income 3. the uniqueness of this clue busting that brought us together here.
Terry, you're doing what I couldn't... This is fantastic. Keep aligning things as you are. This time i'm REALLY outta here for bed!!! Huggers to you both for all your hard work and belief.
OK, I give. We need a web page. With that we can include a chat room, posting room, etc. Although I can consult, I can't manage the page. I do have some space on my ISP that's not being used (10mgs), and can help assemble the page....and, OK.....Tell me what to do, I feel guilty for not showing Sunday. I'm gonna lose my job, damnit!
BeeyoB - Don't feel guilty and DON'T LOSE YOUR JOB!
Let's see what the PP can do for us first. After all, that's our first link. I'm sure they don't want to lose us. They were interested enough to send two people out on Sunday with beanies and t-shirts.
All, if I'm to do this page, and this cooler is kuput in a short time, I need everybody to keep everything data wise. This means someone needs to provide me with a list of email addresses of those that have data! I can glean a lot form the cooler if they post an archive, but anything else you have, please save. What have I gotten myself into? Doesn't Ian have a page? Maybe a cooperative effort? Again, tell me what to do, I'm guilty.
Terry, VERY good point-We Dig! That's it, enough said. We dig for whatever needs digging for. The name of the cooler is "We Dig". Casey, are ya here? Name of the cooler is "WE DIG". We'll give insights into all that needs digging into. Night all, I'm bed-sick.
Ian will be back on during the wee hours. He'll slog and help I'm sure. He's a great guy with an interest in all this.
Greg is also computer literate and can help. He usually checks in off and on and will slog through this. He did buttons for Sunday from Milwaukee - I'm sure he can help here, too.
Holly Wood might also have computer smarts. He has checked in regularly.
I'm sure there are others. I just can't think of who they are now.
My license plate reads "WIZARDS", but that's the name of my PeeWee baseball team, not any thing exotic or fantastic. I have expressed my thoughts to Casey, and urge everyone else to do the same. We need a place to continue and progress. A new discussion group is fine, as long as we can inform everyone interested where it is located. I can post info on the PPMCC page, but as has been mentioned, I have only a limited amount of space. The Guestbook contains a few addresses, but:
a)it was started too late
b)it wasn't publicized enough for people to post
c)people weren't interested enough to do it
I can be reached on my pager: 318-1933 If anyone doesn't know the web sites, PLEASE click on my picture and look for PPMCC Web Site and/or PPMCC Guestbook.
John Jordan: Maybe a good approach for us to take would be to find out what, among all our planned activities, fits with PioneerPlanet's goals, without bringing ourselves to the point of ineligibility to hunt medallions.
BeeyoB: About our eligibility & relationship with PP -- undeniably, we are their baby and it would be nice to continue a relationship with Mother Pioneer, but from the outside perspective we need to be careful not to draw attention to the wrong things. If one of us were to actually find the medallion and it came out that we were helping to promote the Press/Planet it could get ugly. By the current rules, we're still totally eligible, but it's appearances that I'm more worried about...thus the idea that we need to separate ourselves by identity. Not saying we shouldn't use the Cooler area and anything else the Planet has to offer.
BeeyoB, Ian, green, et al.: I've been keeping a list of the best and brightest since day 1. There are nearly 40 e-mail addresses on it. I'll share that list soon. Should be a good start for attracting interest in our efforts.
All: Sorry I've been so quiet lately but I've been taking work home every night since Sunday. I think most of you can relate as I'm sure we all got behind in our work. I'll put up more on the Schell medallion hunt and give more of my thoughts later. I'll e-mail Casey, for what it's worth. I think "We dig" is too general for a Cooler topic. The Cooler has to be something descriptive that other people could feel free to step into and it should look like the other Coolers. Some ideas:
Are you a fan of the Pioneer Press medallion hunt?
Pioneer Press medallion hunt...planning for 1999!
Pioneer Press medallion hunt discussion, memories, etc.
You get the idea. All 3 of the above would look fine next to the other Cooler discussions and they all give a sense of an ongoing discussion, not something old and worn.
As I said, I'll give the above thoughts to Casey. I have to believe an ongoing discussion on the Cooler is beneficial to the Planet because of the ideas that are expressed within this particular thread. In many ways, we are giving a little treasure back to them. If they don't take us up on our offers to volunteer and promote the Water Cooler at the State Fair, at senior homes, and so on, they're really missing a golden (or shall I say blue plastic) opportunity.
Here is my closing paragraph in the e-mail I sent to Casey. Gives me goose bumps:
I have to believe an ongoing discussion on the Cooler is beneficial to the Planet because of the ideas that are expressed within this particular thread. In many ways, we are giving a little treasure back to the Press/Planet with the ideas we come up with. Relegating the thread to "Old discussions" would be counterproductive. I think if you have discussion groups on "What should we do with wolves?" and "The Academy Awards" there is room for a Cooler where people actually discuss ways to help the community and ways to increase visibility of a unique Pioneer Press tradition.
However... Check it out. Basically The Re-Hash Bash is the same - a group of folks gathering in winter, pretending it's summer, and pigging out! I most definately think the Twin Cities is ready for a "Pioneer Planet Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt Re-Hash Bash." John J.: I'll be glad to cook dogs or dish up potato salad (LOL!) at next year's Bash if the PP puts it on. Just let me know what you want me to do/how I can help!!!
Found a Deer River Wild Rice Festival Medallion Hunt - on the 4th of July. Unfortunately, the page does not *say* just *where* Deer River is!!!!!!
Greg: Don't sweat the small stuff - you always show up when you can. That's the way we all have to do it. I *think* the "We Dig" was thrown out as name for us as a group separate from the PP - for parades, the NPO, etc. If the PP wants/is looking for a name for the acutal Cooler, I think they should go with PPMC, or something along those lines.
Jagged: Welcome back!!! Haven't seen you here since early on, tho caught your name in'a couple'a other Coolers. In the pics that will hit the PP - I'm thinking this coming Monday? - I'm the one in the white golf hat.
Which reminds me. All: When pics have been developed, lets get together for pizza or something and look at them!!
All - Just checked in during the lunch hour. Yes Greg, we are all catching up I think. Nice to know your still checking in. Thanks for the e-mail to Casey. Mega Goosebumps!!!
Jagged - have you signed Ian's guest book? Welcome back.
Green - Deer River is up north somewhere. We'll have to check a map.
Greg - Like your ideas for cooler discussion Should be PPM Hunters...
Would be more inclusive to new folks finding us during the year.
Later.....work is calling me back. Kids is college - gotta work!
The Planet would like to help foster the online community you all have been building. Here are plans and possibilities:
1) I'm checking under Water Cooler's hood for ways to capture all the posts from this discussion. I'll let you know when I figure out something.
2) We've harvested the e-mail addresses from people participating in this discussion with an eye on creating a medallion-hunt-related listserve (e-mail mailing list). We'll tell more as soon as we establish how the listserve will be used and how to respect the privacy of those who own those e-mail addresses.
3) PioneerPlanet can donate web space from our InfiNet servers for a medallion hunt crew web page. (I have to get the final OK, but I think we can do it.) We can link to that page from PioneerPlanet and a Water Cooler discussion. Logistical details to consider: (A) Who's going to maintain said web page? and (B) I'm not sure InfiNet will allow the kind of scripting that creates guestbooks, etc.
4) Planning for Water Cooler and/or medallion hunt apparel is bubbling in the crafty minds of those at PioneerPlanet who create such things.
5) Finally, in a day or so I want to establish a general discussion area for the Water Cooler crew. My hope is that it can be general enough to draw in people who don't hunt but want to find some nice folks to shoot the breeze with, and yet specific enough to meet the needs of you treasure-huntin' fiends. (And of course, when it comes time for the hunt next year, we'll open up a special area in advance of the hunt.)
Whew! I hope you got through all that. Of course, your feedback and e-mails are welcome. Please let us know what we can do for you.
we need to be strategic to the point where the medallion next year will be found be one of the coolers in a week, by being organized and sending groups to different parks to look before the snow is compacted. but for next, as of now we can all go back to being slackers
Casey, Thanks a bunch for all you've done for us. I don't think any of us expected this cooler discussion to grow to this. We're really excited. Yeeeha!
Ian, Cake Girl, Green or anyone else - could one of you show me how to get a cool icon instead of the talking head (like Green's mouth, Cake's cake etc.)? I don't know how!
I've found a way to capture this whole discussion in 15-25 (rather large -- 200K) html files. The images won't show up and the links won't work, but the text is all there.
Does it fit the bill? Who wants it when it's ready? Discuss amongst yourselves and get back to me.
Casey: Fits the bill just hunky dorry, sir!!! Thanks!!!
Ian, can you and BeeyoB handle the Web page? And can you e-mail him with the good news and tell him not to jeapordize his job - that the PP has come thru?????

Ever...LOL. I should know better, I've been at this a long time. Just when I thought it was at Mounds.......
Do call me green, please! <g>
Well, hope your wife is reading over your shoulder rite now.... I LOVE YOU!!! Keep up the good work and ideas, we really need you, BeeyoB!!!
BeeyoB - I agree about the link to the planet. This is their game and ours for that matter.

See you tomorrow!!!

Tomorrow Green! Dream names, links, and threads. Peace!

Wish I could have met you Sunday face to face.
We Dig! That's our common thread. We probably dig for other things too. This is driving me crazy.
All, if I'm to do this page, and this cooler is kuput in a short time, I need everybody to keep everything data wise. NO GUILT!!!
Ian has a page and a guestbook. Should have all e-mail addresses in there for anyone who was interested in signing.
NO GUILT!!!

Funny, this board was pretty quiet yesterday. Seems to have picked up steam again. A bit of a crisis but help is on the way.
New name for the cooler "We Dig!"
Thoughts, input?
This rambling mind needs sleep. Another full day tomorrow.
My license plate reads "WIZARDS", but that's the name of my PeeWee baseball team, not any thing exotic or fantastic. I have expressed my thoughts to Casey, and urge everyone else to do the same. Howdy from work. Any more thoughts on logo wear? Has anyone called the PP and demanded their logo wear?
All: Think we may have missed the Schell bock hunt. Found an article (www.mankato.msus.ed/depts/reporter/reparchive/02_11_97/bock.html) that has no date in it, but see the date in the address... :(

Thank you for the hospitality Green and Terry. I must admit, I've been reading all along. Hard to get a word in edgewise, you guys are so clever.
Green: You'll have to let me know when the PP comes out with any pictures or stories. You see, I do not get the PP regularly.
Terry: Yes, I did sign the guest book. What a great website.
Thank you Ian for the work on that.
Are you here, GREEN. A teaser for ya-I'm working on a cyber present for your birthday.
Maybe one of us should throw a prize(or money or car keys) in the snow and make Greenslvs look for it. She sounds like she needs a fix!
