2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

I'm not sure I really buy into this experiment that was conducted today. If you buried something in the snow and the tape on it wasn't very sticky after 2 hours, how does that prove that the Medallion was put there that morning? It still would have been there at least a couple of hours and I'm sure that tape probably gets that way after 10 or 15 minutes. Plus, after the tape warmed up for a bit, it *did* get sticky again and could be removed and reapplied just as it was later on when the finder returned to the park.

If you really want to conduct an experiment, you'd have to

  • Make sure you had the same sort of tape that was actually used (different tapes may yield different results).
  • Let it sit outside for at least a week (the longer the tape is in contact with the item may have some bearing).
  • Let it warm up for a while before conducting the experiment. The Medallion had been found, probably put in a pocket, taken downtown and was inside the PP building for a while (and inside a heated car in the meantime). Then it was in a car again while on the way back to Merriam and thus had plenty of time to warm up.

The Medallion was not moved. It was at Merriam the whole time and the clues all describe Merriam just fine. If they wanted the hunt to end early for some reason, all they had to do was leave it right there on the baseball fields.

If the PP is revamping their website I don't think they would be so worried about inconveniencing the people using the water cooler that they would actually sabotage the entire hunt just to avoid it. They would just dump it on the IS people to figure out a solution.

I think the results of this hunt had more to do with carelessness and ignorance than with any sort of conspiracy. Had this hunt taken place 10 years ago and there had been a foot of snow on the ground, it would have gone at least 11 clues. Hardly anyone is familiar with Merriam and the few people who would have figured it out (which likely would not have included me without today's internet and the Treasure Hunter's Guide) would not have been enough to dig up those fields in a timely manner. So I say the result is due to ignorance in that the cluewriter (maybe someone who wrote them in the past?) didn't seem to take into account how much more readily available information is these days and how quickly that information gets passed around. Ad I say carelessness because it was apparent before the hunt began that the snow cover was in jeopardy. They had time to go back out there and pick it up and move it to a better hiding spot and then even rewrite a couple of the clues if need be. But they didn't and they really shouldn't be surprised it was found so quickly. After being out there today, if the hunt were still going on, you could see it sitting there without even having to dig, so it was inevitable.

So anyway, I go out of town Friday morning with the intention of hunting for the rest of the week, then BAM the damn thing is found! So I got all excited for this event and what happens? It is found before I was able to go out and look for it, AGAIN!! So yeah, I am depressed and greatly saddened that it was found. Was the person that found it a part of the cooler crew?

it was really nice when they had a thread called "shoot the breeze with the cooler crew". that's where we chatted for the other 50 weeks out of the year.

I apologize, if someone could update me, that would be ever so greatly appreciated. I know it was found between to baseball fields in Merriam.

    My questions are:

1). What was it hidden in under, if anything?

2). Did a cooler crew member find it?

3). Was anyone from here close to where it was found?

4). It was found after 6, any chance of a second hunt from them?

    1) No.

    2) Kind'a. He'd posted the nite bee4.

    3) Yes. About 16 o'the Crew, including The Brown, walked on it (but it wasn't hidden yet...) before it was found. Allison had the park aced early on.

    4) Get a life.
