Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.
TMK - you asked about Lisa??? UGH she has been a holy terror today but I think it's just because she is getting some teeth in or something...Oh I just wanted to hide from her today!!
Okay, Ares, how did you take what I gave you and make it into HTML? I right-clicked, view source, and there's a buncha stuff there that I don't understand.
I don't know yet what anyone else has planned for post parade, but personally I was planning on going to the Vulcan Victory Dance at the Radisson afterwards. I've never been to it and it sounds like it could be a lot of fun. There is an $8 admission but there is also live music and stuff. Anyone else up for that?
And for those who have been asking about the Mock Hunt, I've got it narrowed down to a couple of parks though I'm still wondering if we're going to get much more snow, and if we don't, will I be able to hide a chest? Perhaps I should get my own Medallion, especially since Me2's daughter doesn't seem to want to part with last year's chest.
reading through the discussions earlier today of finding a job for Violent J. Now I just came up with an idea. I should apply to the PP for a job. It would be worth it for them to hire me just so I won't ruin the hunt anymore by giving away the parks!
Well when you do become 'the Cluewriter' I want nothing less than The Big W each time you write .... I get off on that stuff. I have a set of blue ones after this years clues if you know what I mean.
Well we will see how the Mock Hunt goes. I'm looking forward to writing some more clues. Now I just need to do some scouting without anyone seeing me. Hmmm, maybe I'll have to wear a disguise.
"Many people here DO NOT want their e-mail address known.
I've tried to keep quiet on this, but I think the privacy thing is being a bit overblown. Granted, there are probably people who don't want their emails given out over this forum where people can get them and harrass and spam them. But I don't think there are too many of the "real" treasure hunters who are all that afraid of the other treasure hunters to the degree they don't want anyone to know anything about them. There's only so much bonding you can do with a person while knowing nothing about them.
I really don't see any reason why there shouldn't be a list somewhere of emails for treasure hunters that they can get on voluntarily and use if need be. In fact, once Yahoo converts it's clubs over to the new groups format, my Yahoo club will end up being sorted by email rather than Yahoo ID. Luckily the new format will allow me to make the membership list available to members only and I will have a lot of control over the membership (although at this point I can't actually claim to personally know everyone in the club).
But I guess my point is that knowing each other's emails isn't the worst thing in the world. Most email programs allow you to block certain users if they become problematic anyway. But if the spirit of the cooler is to live on throughout the year, and these are to be more than just once a year friendships, communication is necessary and the harder it is to communicate with one another, the less cohesive the group will be.
As for some of the rumors about it being my fault it was found (even though I realize I was just perpetuating those rumors myself a few posts ago) I posted my thoughts and the reasoning behind them here just like a lot of other people did. I wasn't the only one saying Merriam either, though perhaps I was saying it in a more convincing way. But everyone had a chance to read what I wrote. Some chose to go with their own ideas instead. The kid who found it decided on his own that Merriam was worth checking out and if it was indeed because of something I said, that's to his credit that he listened and decided it was a worthwhile suggestion when others did not. It's not that he was given some sort of unfair advantage.
I've also heard talk about speaking in code in the future so as not to give away secrets to lurkers. I'll go on record saying I'm against that and won't go along with any such plan. I was on this board back in 98 and I was mostly a lurker. I wasn't used to deciphering the clues back then and I had no idea what some of them meant. People like Greg Sax and Pat Pfundstein(sp?) posted the explanations and that not only helped me learn how noodling works, but it got me to the right park where I got to join in the fun and catch a case of Medallion fever. If people had been speaking in codes back then and making those not in the "in-crowd" feel like we were intruding on some secret meeting, I probably wouldn't be on this board now. I don't know if I'd even be hunting with any sort of seriousness. The hunt and the Cooler should be inclusive things, and indeed we've been growing in the past few years, and those that have found us and joined us seem to be truly appreciative of what they've found.
So if you think you have a big secret and you don't want people to know what it is, then don't post it. If you want to communicate with other hunters privately, then use a private forum. This board is here for people to discuss the clues and their ideas and I think it should be done in a straightforward manner if you want to participate. Otherwise, why are you here?
I would like to find the Medallion someday. I'd like to be able to say I found it and I'd like to have the money. But contrary to some popular beliefs, the medallion isn't the only prize to be had. There are the friendships you gain from sharing the experience with others, and to limit the sharing is to limit the friendships. There is the public respect one gets from having been right. It's not a tangible sort of reward, but it's a social one. People are all different and some of us are more inclined to appreciate the social reward. In fact, I suspect I'm happier overall from having participated in this hunt and this board and having been right and having everyone know it, than I would have been if I had worked totally alone and found it, only to become another one of those finders that nobody knows and no one remembers. $10,000 is a lot of money, but not that much, and it will only last so long. Having my name as a footnote in history is a reward, but one that only pays out once in a while. The friendships and social rewards I've gotten from having taken the path I've chosen are things that enrich my life over and over again. It's not a mentality I expect everyone to understand, but it's why I do things the way I do and I don't plan on changing.
No one ever likes change but it happens, and, as I said to Green Sunday, Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da. There are things there we won't have that we have gotten used to. It will probably be slower in that you load each message individually along with various graphics and such. Not sure how that will stand up to the pressure of the hunt. I suspect few programs *ever* get tested with a few thousand posts each day, each one getting accessed by probably hundreds of people.
But on the other hand there are good changes too. It seems you can set it to ignore certain users. Hence no more Mr News type characters to deal with. It also seems, which is only a benefit to some, that you can "subscribe" to certain posters. Some people come on here and only want to see posts from certain people. That will help. It can also be useful to have the threaded option because if a thread goes in some direction you don't care about, you can ignore the rest of it. But if you prefer, you can order the messages by when they were posted and then just keep hitting "Next". Personally I kind of like the idea of being able to post a reply to a message when I resd it instead of after I've slogged a couple hundred more messages and forgotten what I was going to reply to.
I'm sure all the people who drove horse-drawn buggy's weren't too thrilled with this complicated automobile thing either, but change happens, and if you can learn how to embrace it and use it to your advantage, it can make life better instead of worse.
Allison - Did you see the post earlier that painted a picture of you walking off into the fog after the ReHash Bash? That's exactly how I felt, except from a different camera angle. Kind of funny. I got to see it again when you were walking across the field on your way to your car. Where's that camera crew when you need them?
yes, I did read that. The camera crew got plenty of shots of me, though I don't think they got any of me walking away. They got some of Jake doing that though. Kind of achieved the same affect.
Anyway, finally finished slogging. Who would have thought it would be so busy with the hunt over? But now that that is done, I think I'm ready to go back to bed. Talk to you all tomorrow.
They got one of me walking away in the frog pond towards the conservatory in fresh snow with my tennis shoes on. It was my first day of shooting and I guess I didn't use my brains to figure out that there might possibly be some snow shots. Needless to say, I was late for work that day. Not quite the same though since it was taken during the hunt and sunny. Your shot would of been perfect for the closing credits.
Hey TMK - what does 44 mean on the other board?
my change happened a month earlier. it was dropped from my last bill, yet my account's still active.
44 is my favorite number. Was my old football number in high school.
Well, I hope my addy stays around for awhile. It takes some time to get out of people's address books.
The other board is sooooooooooooooooo slow, I can hardly slog.
Ares, can you post the link to the 99/00 hunt again? Thanks
oops, I mean 2000/2001
Water Cooler
the file is medhunt2001.zip or something like that.
Gracias, I will bookmark.
de nada. it'll move one of these days. but when it does i'll drop in a link to the new spot.
TMK - you asked about Lisa??? UGH she has been a holy terror today but I think it's just because she is getting some teeth in or something...Oh I just wanted to hide from her today!!
Ewww, teething can be really bad. Only so much you can do to calm and comfort them. Otherwise it's just buckle up and try to hold on for the ride.
Okay, Ares, how did you take what I gave you and make it into HTML? I right-clicked, view source, and there's a buncha stuff there that I don't understand.
yeah I'm trying to hang in there but I almost was ready to sell her today...ok not really but it was really bad tonight.
opened it in word 2000. saved it as html. i have no idea how it does it. all i know is it does.
As much as we love kids, there are going to be times like those unfortunately....
I don't know yet what anyone else has planned for post parade, but personally I was planning on going to the Vulcan Victory Dance at the Radisson afterwards. Hide a Nestle Crunch Medallion. Whoever finds it gets to eat it!
As for where to hide it, just wait until Green picks a park, then switch it to a different park. Just to be consistent. ;)
Or you could use something like Pam Anderson's chest? No wait. That would make it TOO easy also. Snow or no snow :)
You would also have the same problem of not getting it returned.
Marley had an idea for a Medallion I could use. Or I actually have a small metal Winter Carnival coin from a past year that I could use. Hmmmm.
Were you planning on posting the clues on both (now all 3) sites like last year for more involvement?
reading through the discussions earlier today of finding a job for Violent J. Now I just came up with an idea. I should apply to the PP for a job. It would be worth it for them to hire me just so I won't ruin the hunt anymore by giving away the parks!
Yes, I was going to try and post the clues everywhere I could. Not sure this will still be around by then?
Heh, next year Allison gets a note.
You need to keep quiet about the hunt this year, or we'll send in the clowns....
come on kids, quit giving shaggs and j a bad name. lol
Oh, they wouldn't harm him, I know. I suppose the note could go like this:
Just a little note to be quiet, or we'll send in Mr. News and his friend Joe...
I'll never be quiet. It's part of my plot to become the cluewriter. Eventually they will realize it's the only way!
and pie and crap_face and the other has-beens of cooler lore.
Well when you do become 'the Cluewriter' I want nothing less than The Big W each time you write .... I get off on that stuff. I have a set of blue ones after this years clues if you know what I mean.
The Cooler Crew Hall of Shame
Anybody I'm forgetting?
Well we will see how the Mock Hunt goes. I'm looking forward to writing some more clues. Now I just need to do some scouting without anyone seeing me. Hmmm, maybe I'll have to wear a disguise.
There have been other people I can't say I always cared for, but they didn't have quite the same legendary status.
Jesus Christ!?
Depends which personality you're referring to.
Okay, this ninja is heading to bed. SCDs and MCL.

hello guys its me agian lol how is everyone doing???? well im still mad about the hunt but i have bigger fish to fry hehehe
Hi spunky. I took a nap earlier so I thought I'd write some rants since I'm not tired now.
Just looked at the new site for the first time.

Been drinkin' some coffee there Al? ;)
WOW!
No more...
...Joe's...
...on the new board either.
A message for Scribe. When I made your name, I didn't use a different font, those are totally different characters taken from the Character Map. There should be no possible way for it to know that §©®¡ß¢ and Scribe are the same thing.
