Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Green: What's with the F-bomb? Sure, I use it like a period in casual SPOKEN conversation, but it always looks bad in print because it lingers, especially in large, bold caps.

Keepin' it real.

Please keep this board "G"-rated...I know some kids will be paying attention in the near future. And, can we stay "Medallion-focused" ??

I've got my button!!! I've got my button!! I can't believe how hard it is to find these things. I drove around Tuesday night going to the SuperAmerica's and Holiday Stations in two different towns. Nobody had any!! What's up with that? Anyway, thanks to Jim-the-Freight-Train, I got a button!!! Meez happy!!!!!!

Treasure Digger

If you're nice maybe Jim-the-Freight-Train will tell you guys where you can get a button or two. (Of course, for a small fee - hah, hah, hah!) I don't know why people are having problems finding them, meez thinks it's because the Foundation is holding out on the buttons. After all, they're worth so much this year. Jim-TFT tells me that there are packs of 4 for $10. What a bargain!! A true hunter's collector pack.

There are four different buttons this year with four different slogans. They look very much alike but are different. They are being sold separately or 4/$10. We have them for sale at our work, I am not sure why some people cannot find them.

Muffin: *Where* is your work? Is it a public retail-type place? If so, please let us know where we can buy, for those who aren't finding them!

Yo, stopped in for a minute. Need to *know* where to get the button(s). I live East Central Minnesota. If anyone can clue me in, as to the specifics, ie. SA or Holiday, or . . . ., then when I take a run to the cities, I can pick one up. Also, to register, don't you have to turn in a slip somewhere? So I don't think anybody can pick one up for me. So any ideas would be helpful. Thanks! MJ

MJ - I got mine at Snyder's Drugs in Roseville. The registration card is attached to the button...or the button is attached to the card. I could pick one up for you this weekend. Just let me know.

Has anyone heard of "St.Paul Parks: A Treasure Hunter's Guide" I went to the hungry mind bookstore on grand and they told me that they arent printing it this year but I was kinda hoping I could find one of last years. They are just a book of maps of the St. Paul public parks and that junk if you didn't know that already. Anyways, PLEASE e-mail me if you have ANY info on this book and its whereabouts!! (ANTRGF@aol.com) Happy hunting all! See you out there!!!!!!!!! by the way, thank you Terry!!!!!

I don't know whether or not this reiteration will actually be paid any attention, but I guess I'll be a hand of justice any time it becomes needed. Lose the one line posts. This is going to be a huge tool, the media on this web board will be seen by more people than you might imagine (Yes, YOU who post the "hi" and "how are you <insert personal contact here>"). I'll say that again. Lose the one line posts. I get all excited when I see <39 new messages> on the webboard because I expect them to be relevant conversation. Yet, I feel my nerves grate and pinch when I see a string of one worded posts that don't mean dreck to me... and probably mean the same to 99% of the others who will actually read it. Perhaps that doesn't strike to be a point in peoples' minds. Don't post feeble personal questions that involve little or no correlation to the topic of discussion. Use your judgement before I use mine. E-mail people hi's and hello's. Don't fill them here. If you think that the conversation you're about to throw to an old friend is relevant, but might be mistaken, simply direct the comment. Use the person's name that you're talking to. Get in the habit now before this place gets filled up with <censored>. I thank you in advance.

Would the lady that e-mailed me about her Web site and linking to the Cooler Crew Web site please let me know what you're going by *here*??? I *think* I know, but would like to be shure!!! <g>

Also, regarding your record - there maybee some folks here that could answer your question. E-mail Greg Sax, he knows a TON o'stuff about The Med Hunt and its history! And WHERE did you find buttons from so long ago?? Did I see 1949???? Is there anyway you could get those buttons, the old ones (maybee even ALL of them???) scanned??? Please contact Greg about this. I think this izz just the type of thing we're looking for. But ask him/see if he could use the pics or wants them.

If anybody else has stories or memoribilia from past hunts, please contact Greg Sax!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ian, you GOOF!! LOL!!! It won't bee *me* in The Frog Pond, but Bee! I think he's setting up a tent as I type!

It seems folks have started having dreams of where The Med will bee this year and are tying their dreams into, "Does this sound like any park YOU'VE seen????" One native St. Paulian currently living in TX; a lady in the far northern burbs; and a Cooler Head that has NEVER lived here, lives in MO!!!!! Ittiz SO COOLER!!!

Matt: Perhaps you could share what you think *is* appropriate?

I understand what you are saying about what will happen *when* this place gets busy. It may be annoying to you to see people letting others know they're here, but to some people, that is an acceptable - even desirable - post.

Personally, I'd rather see a one line post that contains information, than to see line after line after line that could have been more succinctly worded. I *do* think the "regulars" will sense when the pace is picking up and keep things brief here. I've noticed already that folks are recognizing when they're off the subject, and someone will suggest moving to another cooler.

Glad to have you here, Matt. Hope you come to meet, plan, noodle, and laugh with us on January 23rd at McGovern's!

Hey Treasure Digger, when I stopped by the store today I saw the 4 pack of buttons. Yes they do have 4 registration cards. So if want me to pick one up for you give me a call. It's going to be tough digging if the snow melts like it did today and then refreezes. Later!!

If ittiz Phalen, I'll just go beejeebers!!! Joe - off a year? Would bee way weird....

Could bee that stranger things have happened, I guess..

Tho, The Totally Clueless One and his minions, The Hider(s), are prolly reading this and going ditzo... Trying to find a place we've NOT noodled to hide The Med!!!!

Oh, well. LOL!!!

Green: Actually, a couple of times when I've been doing dishes and kind of letting my mind wander, "Battle Creek" just kind of kept coming to mind - and I wasn't even *thinking* about the medallion hunt. However, I do agree with those who think Phalen is way overdue.

I stopped by The Map Store in St. Paul yesterday afternoon to see if they had the book "St. Paul Parks - A Treasure Hunter's Guide". Unfortunately, they don't have any. The man said they usually do have copies of the book, but this year he hasn't seen the book. I will call the store in a week to see if maybe they got some in. If so, I'll post a message here to let everyone know about it. Jim-TFT, thanks for checking on the button 4-pack. If you read this, go ahead a pick up the pack. I'll pay you tomorrow afternoon. I'll also try calling you later today and let you know as well. One more week until the first clue. It's getting harder to wait but being in the Water Cooler helps a little. It's kinda like cheating, but not quite playing a game. If you know what I mean! Anyway, have a great morning fellow hunters.

I think the Capitol grounds would be a good spot this year. With our newly elected govenor "Jesse Ventura". That might be an ideal spot.

I don't know. I'm rather rookie-ish in the way the hunts have been going, so that might attribute to my opposition of the hunt being held in the city, or at the capitol. It doesn't seem like a good idea, especially with the crowd this one is going to draw.

Eagle: What I believe to be appropriate posting is not irrational. Inks' previous 3 could have been better posted as one. However, the preceding post, although short, is nominal in the sense that there's a greeting to everyone, not just one or two people that the person could just as easily extend a greeting to in real life, or e-mail. Now, I know that I never know for sure who knows who, but I can get a good idea and point a finger when there's posts like "Hey, bring this to work with you tomorrow and I'll pick it up," or "<insert event that happened yesterday>, I can't stop thinking of that!!! Wasn't it funny!?"

Bearing that in mind, say, for instance, I knew Eagle from last year's hunt, and haven't talked to her since then. Should I wish to greet her, I would personally include it with something more appropriate to the conversation... or I'd send an e-mail... Or say nothing until I *do* have something worthwhile to say. Perhaps I'm flawed, but it does keep the screen a lot cleaner. Oh well. I'm striving to make it to McGoverns, we'll have to see.

Matt sorry my posts weren't up to your standards that you seem to be trying to set here. When I post I try to get to the point and never am long winded. I can see your point if somebody just typed one word and left it at that. I beleive long paragraphs aren't really necessary all the time when you just want to make a statement or say hi to somebody.

TREASURE DIGGER---- I also was looking for the book "St. Paul Parks-The treasure hunters guide" I talked to the man at the map store and gave him my phone number so he could call when or if they were comming in. I WAY wanted that book! :( oh well!! ITS COMMING UP!!!!! I am going to buy a white stocking cap pretty soon!! See you all out there and we'll be talking soon!! (I think phalen is WAY overdue for a medallian hunt but I think it'll be something (mabey) to do with Jesee ventura or it being 1999!! What do ya'll think??? Thanks, Amy, for your note. If you hear from the guy about the book, please e-mail me or post a note to everyone else on the Cooler so others will know of the availability of the book. I'm told that it provides real specifics about the parks. I believe the Capitol would also be a great place. The thought of Jesse and the year 1999 would be a good place to start. Maybe something the medallion is hidden in or located near by. It's been in a park for many years and it's now over due to hide it in another public area. It's just 6 more days until the first clue -- which usually is nothing helpful. Oh, by the way, I bought a 4-pack of buttons and have available a button with the registration card if anyone is wanting one. If so, e-mail me and I'll tell you how to get it. $3.20 is the price (what I paid). I'll check in later on. Take care.

Yeah, if you are talking about the book by Steve Worthman "Treasure Hunters Guide", I called him 2 days ago and he said it wasn't available this year cause he decided not to go to press with it since he didn't do an update. He did say it can be checked out from the library because they have it, but other than that we are out of luck. Picked a good year not to publish it for us with a prize of $10,000. Haha.

Where's everyone today? I thought there would be lots of people talking since there's only 4 more days until the first clue or is everyone waiting until Saturday night at McGoverns. Unfortunately, I was hoping to join the gang and meet everyone, but my calendar is full. But I hope to meet everyone out there - where ever the medallion is hidden - who's been here in the Cooler. Take care & I hope more people are here tomorrow.

Okay!! I'm alone again. If there's someone who's looking for a button with the registration card, I have an extra one. I'll sell it for the same amount it cost me - $3.20. E-mail me and I'll let you know how to pick it up. Remember, the registration card has to be returned before January 29 in order to receive the extra $5,000. Just thought I'd offer it to a fellow hunter before the hunt begins.

Treasure Digger - I'm so sorry to read that you won't be able to make it Saturday night :( I was looking forward to meeting you. Maybe, like you said, out at the hunt site. We should all wear name tags so we can spot each other. Of course, in the heat of the hunt, it seems we don't much care who is who as long as we think our next shovel full will unveil the prize.

We will have our second annual rehash bash when the hunt is over. Probably on the 7th...the Sunday after the torchlight parade. Hope you can make it to that.

Have you checked out the www.coolercrew.com site? There are a couple of pictures of last years rehash bash if you use the link from the 1998 clues.

Over in "Shoot The Breeze..." none of us can help but talk about The Med Hunt in some way, shape or fashion. After all, ittiz last year's Hunt that coalesced us into becoming The Cooler Crew. So The Med Hunt izz very near and dear to us - we're ALL OBSESSIVE about it!!!

One reason I tend to "get into it" so much, is because where I grew up in central Illinois there was nothing of this magnitude - or even a lesser one!!! - that drew the community together. I find the whole idea, mind-set, coming-together of an entire community so facinating!

Here in the Twin Cities there are some 3 million people - we're NOT a tiny blip on a map!!! And yet... St. Paul still has such a homey, comfy feel. Still, in 1999 St. Paul, the PioneerPress/PioneerPlanet, are able to draw together total strangers for a happy, shared goal. "Find that blue disk!!!"

A wonderful tradition. And it contributes to the small town mind-set in an area of 3 million people. We all, as we hunt and dig, become one... family? group? community? Whatever! But we share and become equals.

Things like this, The Med Hunt, just don't happen all over the US in large metropolitian areas. We're lucky to be where we are, with the people and communties we have.

We're able to enjoy the child in all of us whether we really are kids - hunting as Maureen and Steve, last year's finders o'The Med, did with their parents - or we're 50, 60 or even older - having hunted for 10, 20, 30 years.

I've never seen anything like The Med Hunt, the group mind-set it evokes, the sharing, the fun, the tradition, the togetherness it brings, in any other community I've lived in in the US. Ittiz so neat...

We're about to turn yet another page in history... The 1999 St. Paul PioneerPress Medallion Hunt...

And I, for one, CAN'T WAIT!!! Good luck all!!! May the best noodler, thinker, Hunter, Digger win!!! Can't wait to see you all out there, noodle clues with you here!

HAVE FUN!!!
