1998 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Hunt for the Pioneer Press medallion!

The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.

The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

I'm still assuming that track refers to a railroad. The parks that have railroads at least relatively near them are:

  • Battle Creek
  • Como
  • Harriet Island
  • Highland
  • Mounds
  • Newell
  • Phalen
  • Merriam Terrace
  • Langford
  • Cherokee Park (I figured it out where it was, thanks)

It's looking more and more like Cherokee Heights Park. Here's the explanation:

--clue one: refers to the "lucky one." the First Bank ONE is visible from Cherokee.

--clue two: water and woods: trees and the river.

--clue three: good sledding hill, we used to go there when I was a kid. At Cherokee near the ballfield.

--clue four: large object in view: NSP smokestack. The transposing of demo and mode equals "dome" and "dome"...the Capitol and Cathedral domes are visible from Cherokee

--clue five: place to play equals ballfield. Check your map for three nearby "city" streets.

--clue six: another reference to the NSP smokestack.

I've probably given away too much. See you out there on Friday night!

The closest park to Pigs Eye is.....Pigs Eye Park! It's just across Hwy 61 from Battle Creek and Mounds

I don't like posting such long messages, but I figured the list could be helpful to those who don't already have it. Copy and paste it to your local hard drive and you're set forever. I would've put it up sooner, but the daytime traffic gets a little hectic. Maybe I'll risk it anyway...

The Pig's Eye Recycling Plant is south of Mounds Park on the Mississippi River, and La Rosa Pasta is packaged in Steger, Illinois, but the spaghetti package has a red rose on it. I have been tracking the clues over the past 20 years and have found that as the writer's of the clues have changed the order of the clues have also changed. But the past few years have indicated that the 1sr, 2nd, or 3rd clue tells us what the medallion is hidden in!

Newell Park is off of Pierce Butler, I don't think that's it no clues lead to it.

Don't know if this means anything... But Como was seven years apart. It's been seven years since Cherokee. "Soon be back"???

    Ms. Snowflake

Cherokee Park is above the river, between Hwy. 13 and the High Bridge. I believe that Greg seems to have an accurate account and knows the background of these clues. Is there adaquate parking for the hunt in Cherokee. You know that safety is an issue?

I could be wrong, but when they say its in a St. Paul park I'm interpreting that literally to mean within the city limits of St. Paul and in a park. Consequently I'm hoping its safe to rule past hiding places such as Roseville or West St. Paul, but that was an excellent posting nonetheless. Now assuming that it is by a railroad and has a street nearby named after a city, this leaves:

  • Como (Lexington)
  • Harriet Island (Nagasaki)
  • Highland (Montreal)
  • Mounds (Urban Place?)
  • Phalen (Arlington)
  • Merriam Terrace (Ann Arbor? Hard to tell on my map)
  • Cherokee (Annapolis)

I ruled out Battle Creek, Newell, and Langford, as well as Meares, because I couldn't find any streets with city names nearby. Correct me if I'm wrong. From this list I think its fairly safe to cross out Como and Harriet Island on the assumption they wouldn't hide it in the same place in such a short span of time. I've never been to Merriam Terrace but it looks to be in a flat part of town. Am I wrong? This leaves us more or less where we started with Highland, Mounds, Phalen, or Cherokee Park.

I'm not sure why everyone wants to go to Cherokee, but I don;t think that is it either. There is an indian tride on Rosebud in SD but it is Soiux, Cherokee

Why "City Streets" and not "way" as in Park"way"

    Fri, 01/30/1998 - 12:40 AM Permalink
    Ms. Snowflake

David you are correct! The street names should be very helpful! But what are the intersecting street names?

    Fri, 01/30/1998 - 12:41 AM Permalink
    Allison Wonderland

Does the high bridge lead to the high ground?

    Fri, 01/30/1998 - 12:42 AM Permalink
    huntandfind

    Highland Parkway

    Fri, 01/30/1998 - 12:42 AM Permalink
    Allison Wonderland

Most of the "city streets" don't really have intersecting streets of note. Its more that they border on or cut right through the parks. The only exception is Urban Place which intersects Mound Blvd, but that seems like the weak link in the group.

greenslvs2: It's actually been 6 years since Cherokee; that would be a record for repeating but if you checked my post at #878, you'd see that I agree with the "soon be back" idea.

Other stuff...I think the La Rosa Pasta idea is clever, but off. If "Rosebud" has nothing to do with the sled, or the movie, or the word "rose" or "bud", then hunters will get angry. The Press listens when people complain. We want it to be difficult but not ridiculous. The best "Rosebud" theory I've heard for Mounds is Thorn Street. Other clues may lead to Urban Place, Suburban Avenue, the light tower, a visible playground, visible domes, and now the NSP stack. Granted, Cherokee meets several criteria, but there's that whole repetition thing that the Press might be hung up on.

For anyone interested, a group of us have been getting together prior to going out for the evening hunt. I'll post Friday's spot, may be Patrick Mc's?

Why did we rule out prospect? It's close enough to Cherokee to have the same attributes, plus its btwn Water and Wood Sts

    Fri, 01/30/1998 - 12:50 AM Permalink
    Allison Wonderland

I'm going to guess that Phalen is not it because the railroad goes through the Maplewood area of it. I also doubt that Mounds is it at this point because of the lack of good street names. I can't eliminate Highland yet, but Cherokee does border Harriet Island Park for you "soon be back" fans. Also, isn't it across the river from where the new Science Museum is going to be (in reference to my earlier ulterior motives posting)?

    Fri, 01/30/1998 - 12:50 AM Permalink

The High Brige is at an incline and goes over Water Street, starts at Smith St. and goes to Manomin Ave. according to my (old) map.

    Allison Wonderland

Actually now that I see where Prospect is, it does border on a street named Chicago and is nominally close to the railroads and harriet island for that matter (being back soon). Its also on Delos St for those who believe in that interpretation, though I don't.

So far we've seen no clue (we think) of what the Med is in. And we've seen nothing yet (hopefully Sat am clue) about where in the park. At least ONE of those two should be hinted by now.

Hey, BeeyoB. Weren't you represented by a satellite icon or was that somebody else? I was getting used to that. I wish I could join you at McGovern's. You just helped me realize that I referred to it as George McGovern's earlier in the day. Man, that would be one sad, old bar if it were named for George.

We just got back from Mounds, it,s definitely there. All the clues all point there. there wasn't too many people digging, it's just a matter of finding the right spot.

Has this ever happened to anybody...Tonight I was standing in this "certain area," and I looked around..each and every clue unfolded..lost their ambiguity and mystery. It was so amazing. The coolest part...only three people were there other than me!!! But my digits were freezing off. I'm going to be looking for that exact point..those two inches of snow...tomorrow.

Snow Princess - I had that same feeling at Highland a couple of years ago. And that's where it turned out to be 2 clues later. I dug for a bit then joined the crowd thinking that I was off. Bad idea. When I seen that old folks home perched under the bridge crossing Montreal, it was like seeing the big 'W' on 'It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world'. Awsome! You should stick with it. You could kick yourself later if you don't. I was just up at Mounds too. I think I saw you. I was in a purple Blazer.

For those of you not out and about, especially Mr. Sax, I was all over just now. About 75 - 100 people were up at Mounds. I checked Cheorkee, Prospect, Central, Capitol Grounds, Harriet Island, Rice, Kellogg and Como parks. Only 2 people at Cheorkee and none at the rest. Moderate digging in each park, though that's common for the locals of the surrounding neighborhoods to fit each clue to their park, and just fun to have an excuse to get out. It sure looks to be at Mounds.

I need to head out. I have a new baby girl that is certainly going to need me come early morning. This is the first year that I haven't taken vacation days or stayed out all night digging. I know that I'm going to have a hard time getting to sleep tonight thinking about the clues. Well, someday I will bring little Alicia out with me and we are deffinately going to find that coveted coin. See you at Mounds. Night all. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Just got back from Mounds myself. The medallion has an incredible knack for being exactly where I am not looking.

This years weather is a Godhead send compared to what we had to deal with last year. If they aren't out looking in this weather, what the heck do they want?
