Hunt for the Pioneer Press medallion!

The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.

The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

Hello treasure hunters:

Way back at posting 409 I thought the clues pointed to Mounds. Now they may point to Cherokee. For Mounds I thought the "beacon" was the large structure to guide the way; but maybe it's the "Landmark" Brewery visible from Cherokee. The NSP smoke stack is certainly visible...quite a few city streets go into the park. I was talking with a treasure hunter at Mounds yesterday and he thought the anagram

"dome" clue may actually mean that the treasure is hidden in a computer CD-ROM or disk--crack the code...duke

This is just a thought but Yestdays clue said City streets will show you the way and todays clue said look for a (plume=Plum street) of smoke in the skies. I still think it is at Mounds Park. What do you all think.

Hold on thar! You Do not need 2 domes If you take the first and last letters of DemO and ModE it spells dome!

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 7:45 AM Permalink
greensIvs2

Good observation, MKIA! However, you're still having to use *two* words to come up with just one dome. I really think the two is significant for two domes.

Could be!

Hey MKIA, greenslvs2, or Greg Sax,

I've been keeping up with most of the brainstorms the diggers have made, but there is one that I can't figure out. The city streets URBAN and SUBURBAN near Mounds Park. Is it because their terms and not actual "cities"? Looking for some help.

Desire-to-win

Talked to several winners yesterday, they thought it was at Indina Mounds Park. Over 100 people have been there and dug it up. They said that the Rosebud was definitely a sled. However, could not make a connection.

One thing no one has noted is the mention of 'scenery'. The most striking impression one takes from Mounds Park is the view.

It's more probable than not that it is at Mounds. The 'Urban' and 'Suburban' connection is perfect, as is the tower for the airplanes.

And this is the biggie: The railroad tracks are directly beneath Mounds Park, whereas they are ACROSS THE RIVER at Cherokee, which would be too much of a stretch.

Bon chance, all!

Desire-to-win

Where exactly is this Mounds Park? The first clue said it was in a St. Paul Park. Are you referencing Indian Mounds?

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:24 AM Permalink
Daniel Weiss

'Mounds' is a shortening of 'Indian Mounds Park'. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, east of St. Paul. You can see it from Highway 52.

cold toes

snowball2, i think they are comparing suburban ave, urban pl and burns, to anagrams like demo, mode and dome.

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:28 AM Permalink
Desire-to-win

Thanks, Dan. The only thing that doesn't fit at Indian Mounds is that there is no place for sledding.

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:29 AM Permalink
greensIvs2

Snowball2: IMHO... "Urban" & "Suburban" don't cut it as both are types of areas, while "city" streets, i.e., "Annapolis," "Lexington," are streets around parks that have actual city names.

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:31 AM Permalink
Daniel Weiss

Really, there's no sledding hill. That's a problem, definitely.

It's at one of two parks, no doubt: Mounds or Cherokee. I'm heading out within the hour but still haven't decided where to.

But too much does fit at Mounds, and the 'zoom' might just be something other than sledding, no?

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:32 AM Permalink
Desire-to-win

City streets does not necessarily mean names of cities. This information comes from previous winners. They thought that the city streets meant that all the surrounding streets lead to the center of the park. However, you cannot dig at the top because of the fence.

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:35 AM Permalink
Desire-to-win

Zoom could also refer to airplanes zooming through the air. But where is the smoke coming from at Mounds?

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:36 AM Permalink
Snowball 2

Thanks cold toes2, and greenslvs2 for the help.

P.S. greenslvs2 what dose IMHO mean?

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:38 AM Permalink
cold toes

the smoke comes from the trains

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:39 AM Permalink
Daniel Weiss

Oh, man, the smoke is so very much the NSP smokestack, perfectly viewable from Mounds. PLUS, check out the clues for '87, when it was at Mounds, and you'll find something interesting. One of the clues makes reference to, get this, the Cathedral -- a dome if there ever was one.

Yesterday there were at least one hundred people at Mounds and nobody has found it yet. So I'm wondering what other park could it possibly be?

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:44 AM Permalink
R C

Hi everyone! We established before that Rosebud is a name of a Sioux Tribe that's buried at Mounds Park. So, zooming doesn't necessarily have to mean sledding - it could mean the hill that kid's zoom down on their bikes in the summer or something! Or that airplanes zoom by. The smoke comes from the trains' smokestacks.

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:46 AM Permalink
Shawnster Johnster

Rosebud is also the name of a kid's sled. Other than that clue, could it not be another park?

How about a "crytpographic" clue, anyone have one? I know that they

have an anagram for "dome" in the "demo" verse, is that public

knowledge yet? Do you think dome has to be Cathedral???

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 8:50 AM Permalink
Chris Palmer

Good morning and tally ho!

In Mounds, to the west of the beacon, there is a hill that has been used for sledding, so you could justify the Rosebud and zoom clues that way. It's not the best sledding in town, but I think it's alright.

Chris, help me out. I'm trying to find another reason to pick another park. What are the urban/suburban/burns clues?? that might mean I am out of luck. I'm not going to mounds park to search with 100 other perople...

Jim-the-Freigh…

Hey Shawnster, yesterday I overheard a couple people talking at Mounds that they had won it in the past and were convinced that the medallion is definitely at Mounds. But I still don't understand why it has not yet been found when there are soooo many people at Mounds?

Im thinking it is definetely at Mounds!!

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 9:03 AM Permalink

Its a word Game. Mound Park is an Urban Park as well as Mound being a Suburb of St Paul. At least in my opinion

can somebody help me whats with the childs road???

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 9:05 AM Permalink
Jim-the-Freigh…

It can't be in Mound because the first clue indicated that it was in a St. Paul park.

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 9:06 AM Permalink
Jim-the-Freigh…

Where are you getting Childs Road from?

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 9:07 AM Permalink

Jim the FT: They're talking about Mounds Park in St. Paul

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 9:09 AM Permalink

and someone thought Child's Road - because of the "kids zooming" clue.

Fri, 01/30/1998 - 9:10 AM Permalink
Snowball 2

Jim the Freight Train: Are you thinking of Mounnd the City?? Because the Mounds park that people are speaking of is across from Downtown St. Paul in the Dayton's Bluff area. (Indian Mounds Park)

Snowball2, I didn't say that it was in the city of Mound it was Keast, which I told Keast that it has to be in a St. Paul park because of the first clue. I'm with you I think it is at Mounds.

Shawnster:

Sorry to take so long to respond - I was trying to ketchup on the 558 messages I missed since yesterday AM!!! My take on the urban/suburban is that they are terms for "city". Or, if according to an earlier posting (can't remember #), Urban is indeed Urban Place, take the whole clue - "place to play...city streets will show you the way" - and pull Urban Place out of it, like they did with "Palm" and "Lot" last year. It seems that this year we will not get something as easy as Cuomo without the "u". Am I making any sense? I can't really tell.

Well, I don't work too far from Mounds Park - so I think I'll go out at lunchtime and look. Maybe try to find a place where there's not too many footprints. It sounds like it's pretty picked through though.
