Vikings try to land big catch: Minnesota is trotting in 6-8 unrestricted wide receivers over the next few days as they accelerate the search for a Cris Carter replacement and partner for Randy Moss. Make no mistake, though, the guy who rates at the top of the Vikings wish list is Jerome Pathon, formerly of Indianapolis. The four-year veteran is coming off foot surgery that limited him to four games in 2001, but he has a huge patron in Scott Linehan, the new Minnesota offensive coordinator. Linehan was the receivers coach, then coordinator, at the University of Washington when Pathon played there and has spent the past several days personally recruiting him by phone. Pathon is intrigued by the possibility of playing opposite Moss, and working against single coverage most of the time, and having Daunte Culpepper throwing to him. The Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs also are hot on Pathon's trail. Pathon recently had the surgical screws removed from his broken foot and should be able to start jogging next week.
Mike Tice continues to evaluate talent at wide receiver and an offer sheet for Chicago WR D'Wayne Bates may come as early as today.
The Vikings continue their first real foray into free agency in five years today, as Jerome Pathon will meet with team officials and medical specialists to have his ailing foot examined.
However, the Vikings aren't limiting themselves to just Pathon. VU has been told an offer sheet is expected to be made to Chicago WR D'Wayne Bates, perhaps as early as today, but that wouldn't preclude the Vikings from looking to sign Pathon as well.
With Cris Carter and Jake Reed gone, the Vikings are looking to fill the void at wide receiver and would prefer not to use a high draft pick on a wideout unless absolutely necessary.
While Pathon is being considered as a starter, Bates would see plenty of action even if Pathon was signed. In Chicago, he was buried behind Marcus Robinson (when healthy), Marty Booker, Dez White and, most recently, top draft pick David Terrell. The Bears have a wealth of wide receivers and, with Bates viewed as potentially a No. 4 or 5 receiver, the Bears likely wouldn't match a decent offer made by any team -- even if it means getting no compensation, thanks to a Bears clerical error earlier this year.
While the team is interested in signing Pathon, at the same time he is getting checked by the medicos, the Vikes could well be finalizing an offer sheet for Bates.
TUESDAY NOTES
If the Vikings do sign Bates to an offer sheet, under NFL rules, the Bears will have seven days to match the offer or decline, at which time he would officially become a Viking.
Fantasy football players weep as one. The New York media broke a story yesterday that Cris Carter and Shannon Sharpe were both in New York last week. Not to try to get a job with the Jets or Giants, but to try out as commentator's on HBO's "Inside the NFL." Both see the broadcast arena as a showcase for their talents if they don't get contracts to their liking in the NFL. While Sharpe is drawing interest from the Broncos, Seahawks and Raiders, Carter's options at this point seem to be limited down to only Miami.
Donald Driver, who visited the Vikings last week, is scheduled to visit Kansas City this week and is expected to look into interest from the Rams and Bills.
VU has been told that the 2002 NFL schedule will be released sometime this week, at which point the Vikings will find out if their current string of Monday Night Football games will continue.
honestly, i dunno why i give you guys such a hard time. lord knows this purple-bleeder has his fair share of packer skeletons in his closet. i mean, aside from it being my sacred duty as a minnesotan.
The Minnesota Vikings signed return man/running back David Allen. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Allen, 5-9, 195, was a four-year starter at Kansas State University and had 103 punt returns for 1,646 yards (16.0 avg.) and seven touchdowns in his career. His 1,646 yards is a school record, a Big 12 record, and ranks second in NCAA history. Allen is the only player in college football history to return punts for touchdowns in three straight games and to twice return punts for touchdowns in back-to-back games. He added 783 yards rushing and eight touchdowns during his college career on 168 attempts, and also caught 12 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.
The 24-year-old Allen was not selected in the 2001 NFL Draft but signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent on April 27, 2001. He was released by San Francisco on August 30.
A 13-5 team resigned their entire O-line...have the strongest D-backs in the league...bolstered, dropped the age of, and increased the speed and rushing ability of their D-line...
You 5-11 team has done nothing but add no-name, Lance-Johnstone type players and lose the strength of your alread depleated D...
This is the Sport's Illustrated headlined this morning...
Packers complete deal with ex-Saint Johnson • Spurrier starts Skins fast in first NFL practice • Done deal: Saints trade All-Pro Roaf to Chiefs • Roundup: Pats land Cleeland; Lions ink Crowell • Steelers increase offer to pry Peterson from Chiefs • Raiders' Russell pleads innocent to sexual assault • Filling backfield, Bucs sign Pittman, Hanspard
Nothing about a "HACK" kick returner...heh..heh...
While one WR comes through town looking to be a starter, the Vikings are closing in on an offer for a No. 3 receiver.
The Vikings made some progress Tuesday to fixing their depleted wide receiver corps, but no permanent changes are expected to be resolved immediately.
Jerome Pathon came through town Tuesday, meeting with Vikings officials and going through a battery of medical tests on his injured foot. Pathon, who had screws removed from his foot earlier this month, isn't able to practice and word from Winter Park is that he won't be able to fully work out for a few more weeks. The Vikings aren't prepared to make him a contract offer of substance until he shows that he is 100 percent recovered from the injury.
Meanwhile, the Vikings are closing in on an offer for restricted free agent D'Wayne Bates. Negotiations Tuesday essentially set the ground rules for a final offer, which, once signed, will give the Bears one week to match.
The Vikings signings are going to likely end by the beginning of next week, but the remainder of this week will continue to keep the focus on wide receiver, since the only veteran WRs on the roster are Randy Moss and Chris Walsh.
WEDNESDAY NOTES
One name that has surfaced in halls of Winter Park as a possibility is Jacksonville WR Keenan McCardell, who could be an ideal Cris Carter replacement. McCardell has skipped the Jags pre-draft mini-camp, another indication that he will be released June 1. While the Vikings can't officially speak with him until he's released, there is said to be interest and, if he is cut loose, the Vikes will be one of the first teams chasing him down.
With the Vikings not looking to immediately make an offer to Pathon, he isn't holding his breath. He is in New Orleans talking to the Saints today.
Another wide receiver went out of the picture Tuesday, as Tony Simmons signed a deal with Houston.
The Vikings signed free agent RB/kick returner David Allen Tuesday. The Vikings had pursued Allen for more than a week, signing the former Kansas State kick returner to replace Troy Walters in that role with the Vikes. Allen was last seen in 49er training camp last year.
Mitch Berger is likely to sign by the end of the week. He has narrowed his choices down to St. Louis and Indianapolis. Berger passed a physical with the Rams yesterday and could be made an offer as early as today.
WOLVY all DG SYSTEM did was make him the 8th winningest coach in NFL HISTORY bring us 4 divisions --- playoffs 8 out of 10 years ----- 1 losing season ----- he made the playoffs as many times as GB did in the past 33 years ----- he won 2 coach of the year awards ----- YOU BETTER PRAY TICE IS half as good as dg
Honestly he has signed an average CB an Average DE a slightly below average lb and kr and bates is not very good
the problem is the VIKES HAVE THE MOST CAP MONEY IN THE NFL and rather then spend it on 2 or 3 good players (at least wait until guys like mcardell get released and get them cheap) they are making terrible decisions on average players
gb with no cap room managed to sign name guys i think we could have had glenn our 4th rounder is higher then theirs think j johnson although overrated (he benefitted from a great no line) is better then mixon pathon bates bromwell THESE GUYS ARE WASTING OUR CAP SPACE IN A HURRY

Vikes might be blowin smoke about not taking WILLIAMS OT TEXAS they better take him if hes avaialable
if williams peppers and mckinnie are gone there are only 2 players left worth a 7th pick WENDELL BRYANT or MIKE PEARSON otherwise the vikes should trade down with OAK (and pick up a combo of pearson/l jones and tripplet/haynsworth/weaver) s
UNLESS SANDBAGGING on WILLIAMS AND BRYANT looks like vikes will take sims this makes no sense BRYANT IS THE SAME SIZE only faster and has the ability to passrush like a demon -----
you guys must have seen all his games how would you rate bryant (unless PEPPERS MCKINNIE or WILLIAMS drops to #7 they wont) I WOULD TAKE BRYANT over SIMS HENDERSON HAYNSWORTH because BRYANT CAN PLAY DT OR DE he knows how to get sacks I SEE HIM AS THE SECOND COMING OF JOHN RANDLE bennett was great last year i think anyone who does well in big 10 has a shot to be an all pro I WOULD SAY 24 sacks as a DT in the BIG 10 means bryant could be an all pro --- he can always bulk up and get bigger and stronger
1 BRYANT 2 COLOMBO we need an ot and pearson or colombo would fit the bill L JONES IS ALSO worth a shot 3 s or cb there are a ton of cbs and s out there for the third spot 4 lb

There's a reason why SF dumped him BEFORE last season started and allowed him to be signed now...
With all your FA cash, shouldn't you do better little C?
"The Vikings are loaded with holes"
Granted...and how.
"and have just adequate cap money to spend for filling those holes."
BS. You have the MOST cash and have spent very little and got NOTHING but marginal players for it.
"They're doing a great job with what they have."
You don't believe that, why do you expect I would?
"We need a return man who can score."
Doesn't everyone? A guy who was cut last year is a BIG FIND? Fffffffffffffffffffffffffffttttttttttt
CCR...
Look again...
You have almost 14 million in under-cap money...
YOU LEAD THE LEAGUE...
Packers had half that...
Compare the results...
And you're happy?
I know better.
You're pissed.
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah
What have you done for me lately?
Ooh ooh ooh yeah.
I'd buy you some muscles if I could...
Stop! Please stop! You make me hurt...right here.
