Some women do not appreciate being called a "chick"

For that reason, I usually will not assume it's OK. In the beginning, to be eligible, a "chick" was generally someone who was posting daily.
I don't think that is really a "requirement" Self-nomination is allowed: e-gram me if I have not asked. Please.

I'm sorry... what is this Como thing you are talking about. Is this place even in the state of Minnesota?

Very cooler, Kitch! I have a friend who has adopted 3 girls from China and is involved in a group of adoptive parents who have likewise completed their families.

Great news Kitch!  A good friend of mine adopted a china girl too.  She's the same age as Alibabas.  They would come over and play all the time but got busy later.  Next thing you know, they're in the same class over the summer. I've never seen bigger smiles on anyone before.  It was sad when summer school ended tho.  :-(

I know a couple couples who've adopted from China.  That's awsome!

I ordered my GPS - should be here in 7-10 days. I also became a premium member of geocaching.com.

What's a virtual cache (the ones with the ghosts)? What is the point?

Why isn't there a cache in College Park?

Ian, are you going to replace FORE! Cache for city slickers?

I want to download waypoints from geocaching.com. First, I don't know which format my GPS supports, second, since I am a premium member I can get the ebook thing, but I don't know if I can read that. Can you help? I have a Garmin GPS 60C.

oh..crap...that won't work for you...you need a serial port for that...umm...let me look

Mon, 02/21/2005 - 7:52 PM Permalink

you will want to eventually get a serial cable...I'm so sorry I forgot to tell you about that...

your USB cable will be fine for a long time...but someday you might want to get a serial cable...

Why would you want a serial cable versus a USB?

That's news to me.

I thought USB was super fast compared to serial, but that USB uses more system resources.

But what do I know. That's just what I thought. I could be wrong.

So, I just load up the gpx file into GSAK like normal, then click on the
thunderbolt to upload waypoints to my machine... it pops up with the 'send
waypoints to GPS window:

In the left column, I make sure that the 'Geocache' symbol shows up for
"Not Found"

In the right column I change the Waypoint name to be a smart name so it
just kinda smashes the name together. The 60 can hold a 10 character
waypoint name but I actually have it truncate the name to 8 characters.

In the first box it says:

%smart=8

Max characters:

10

I leave the 'problem characters' box blank

and then in the Waypoint description format box it says this:

%drop2 (%Dif/%Ter) (%typ1/%con1)

%drop2 gives you the waypoint designation as gc.com does, without the
initial "GC" on the front - so if your waypoint was GC1234, it would just
read '1234'.

(%Dif/%Ter) gives you the difficulty/terrain of the cache you're looking for

(%typ1/%con1) gives you the type of cache and the type of container it's
hidden in.

There are a billion different ways you can reorganize what appears in your
notes, and there is a nifty little file in GSAK help called 'Special Tags'
or something like that, but instead of making you go find it, I'm including
it here.

THIS IS FOR GARMIN ONLY!!!!! WITH GSAK!!!!

if you have questions an GSAK...read this thread...
I know some of this can be WAY over your head when you first see it....was for almost half of cachers out there...but its really not that hard....

also geo101 will help everybody....

JOEL knows this better then I DO.....but the post I made on post 91 is very important for a 60C!!!

Okay, I am beginning to understand this and I appreciate your help. I am looking at GSAK FAQs right now and it says nothing about only working with serial cables, so I am going to assume it works with USB and download it.

I did load 3 caches in my neighborhood by downloading the GPX files one by one, but that seemed silly. Then I realized I could do the Pocket dealy, but I like the idea of having better control over the names, since the GC names are pretty worthless.

Thank you !

I get e-mail like:

"I went to GC1234 today, and it seemed like ... blah blah blah"

WTF? WHAT cache was it?

More questions-

So I sent 100 of the closest caches to GSAK via a Pocket Query. If I change the output query (say not include the container or something like that), what will happen when I update the GPS. Will everything get written over? Will I get two caches for each name?

Thanks.

So, I figured I knew the areas, and I could put out three new caches in a little over an hour or so. Well, it didn't work out that way. I'm mostly happy with the hides. Should be slightly challenging. I wanted one near the river, by the old trestles. I'm walking along in like 5" of snow, and hit a spot with ice underneath. LOTS of ice underneath. The whole friggin' hillside is ice underneath. Feet go up in the air, K B, walking stick and GPSr begin the slow slide toward the water. "OK, maybe this isn't a good idea." Five feet from swimming I'm able to make some lateral movements and escape. Back to the car and farther down the road.
