AKA Earworm Central. "Keptin! They put creaturesin our bodies!"--Chekov
If you're gonna have a folder about beer, you gotta have some tunes.
My life flows on in endless song
above earth's lamentation.
I hear the real, through far-off hymn
that hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the
strife I hear that music ringing.
It sounds an echo in my soul, how
can I keep from singing?
Somebody is currently whistling this in the men's room:
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak,
But if you feel like I feel,
Please let me know that it's real.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
I love you, baby,
And if it's quite alright,
I need you, baby,
To warm a lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say:
Oh, pretty baby,
Don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay
And let me love you, baby.
Let me love you.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
I love you, baby,
And if it's quite alright,
I need you, baby,
To warm a lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say:
Oh, pretty baby,
Don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay..
Have I mentioned that I sit entirely too close to the men's room?
No, but thank you for sharing. It explains a lot.
Yeah.
I apparantly have a soft spot in my head for that song, as it is still my current earworm.
Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair, and a dress cut down to there
She would Merengue and do the Cha-Cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 'til 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more
Chorus:
At the Copa, Copa Cabana
The hottest spot North of Havana
Here at the Copa, Copa Cabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the Copa
They fell in love
Copa, Copa Cabana
His name was Rico, he wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far, Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew, and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who
{Chorus}
She lost her love
Copa, Copa Cabana
Copa, Copa Cabana
Copa Cabana
Copa, Copa Cabana
Life in Havana
Have a banana
Music and passion, always in fashion
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
And that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it's a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear, faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she lost her mind
{Chorus}
Don't fall in love
Don't fall in love
Copa Cabana
Copa Cabana
Copa, Copa Cabana
Copa Cabana (repeat 'til end)
Yeah, well, it backfired and now I'm humming it too. :P
Look out of any window
any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago
Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you -
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping?
Well please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming too
Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
while going home --
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago
Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through
Just a box of rain -
wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower -
Wind and rain -
in and out the window
like a moth before a flame
It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there
Ah.
You should have seem me with the poker man
I had a honey and I bet a grand
Just in the nick of time I looked at his hand
I was talking to an Eskimo
Said he was hoping for a fall of snow
When up popped a sea lion ready to go
Chorus
Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go
Down to Junior's Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let's go
Take me down to Junior's Farm
At the Houses of Parliament
Ev'rybody's talking 'bout the President
We all chip in for a bag of cement
Ollie Hardy should have had more sense
He bought a gee-gee and he jumped the fence
All for the sake of a couple of pence
Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go
Down to Junior's Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let's go
Take me down to Junior's Farm
Let's go, let's go
Down to Junior's Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let's go
Take me down to Junior's Farm
Everybody tag along
I took my bag into a grocer's store
The price is higher than the time before
Old man asked me "Why is it more?"
I said "You should have seem me with the poker man
I had a honey and I bet a grand
Just in the nick of time I looked at his hand
Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go
Down to Junior's Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let's go
Take me down to Junior's Farm
Let's go, let's go
Down to Junior's Farm where I wanna lay low
Low life, high life, oh let's go
Take me down to Junior's Farm
Everybody tag along
Take me down to Junior's Farm
Take me back, take me back
I wanna go there...
I keep hearing you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're giving me is conscience, I guess
If I were walking in your shoes I wouldn't worry none
While you and your friends are worrying 'bout me, I'm having lots of fun
Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do
Last night I dressed in tails pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down
So please don't give a thought to me I'm really doing fine
You can always find me here and having quite a time
Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do
It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete
Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do
This is quite a bit darker than I remembered from my earlier days of listening to it... Reminds me a little of Steely Dan's penchant for wrapping sardonic lyrics in a bouncy tune.
Halley's waitress
never comes around
She's hiding in the kitchen
She's nowhere to be found
I just want some coffee
Is that too much to ask?
Halley's waitress
is not up to the task
And when she finally appears
It's like she's been away for years
It's been so long
So long
Darling don't you know
We miss you when you're gone
So long
So long
Darling don't you know
We miss you when you're gone
Ahhh
Halley's waitress
Has vanished once again
She's talking to her agent
She's calling all her friends
Forget about the coffee
I'll just take a check
Halley's waitress
You know you'll get yours yet
It's been so long
So long
Darling don't you know
We miss you when you're gone
So long
So long
Darling don't you know
We miss you when you're gone
Fun lyrics. Must admit that Fountains of Wayne (??!!??) haven't made it to my ears yet. Sounds interesting though...
you haven't even heard Stacy's Mom?
their name comes from a place that sells fountains in Wayne, NJ. Fountains of Wayne.
Stacy can I come over after school?
we can hang around by the pool
did your mom get back from her business trip?
is she there or is she tryin' to give me the slip?
you know I'm not the little boy that I used to be
I'm all grown-up now baby can't you see
Stacy's mom has got it goin' on
she's all I want, and I've waited so long
Stacy can't you see, you're just not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong but I'm in love with Stacy's mom
Stacy's mom has got it goin' on
Stacy's mom has got it goin' on
Stacy do you remember when I mowed your lawn?
your mom came out with just a towel on
I could tell she liked me from the way she stared
and the way she said "you missed a spot over there"
and I know that you think its just a fantasy
but since your dad walked out your mom could use a guy like me
Stacy's mom has got it goin' on
she's all I want, and I've waited for so long
Stacy can't you see, you're just not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong but I'm in love with Stacy's mom
I have heard the Stacey's Mom song. Cute. A little poppy sounding for me, but interesting video.
As pop goes, Stacy's Mom is among the best. The whole album is tight and well-performed, and often they use this interesting mix of happy sounding music with melancholy lyrics. I like them a lot, and usually top40 stuff leaves me very cold.
Well, okay then.
<Raising Arizona parole board chief>
Good enough for me, I know your tastes are pretty well aligned with mine amie - I'll have to break down and listen to it sometime.
Hey Frosti, you have this one on disc yet?
Nah. But I did download the video. :)
And the video has a lovely little homage to Fast Times at Ridgemont Highin it. Very funny.
Saw that. A la Phoebe Cates.
Aw man, I haven't seen the video. steve h. who posts some in S&S, and other places you may have seen him Sparky, turned me on to FoW. They're really quite talented.
Whoops. *Belated spoiler!!* Hee.
You rang?
Oh baby don't it feel like heaven right now
Don't it feel like somethin' from a dream
Yeah I've never known nothing quite like this
Don't it feel like tonight might never be again
We know better than to try and pretend
Baby no one could have ever told me 'bout this
The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
Well Yeah I might have chased a couple of women around
All it ever got me was down
Then there were those that made me feel good
But never as good as I feel right now
Baby you're the only one that's ever known how
To make me wanna live like I wanna live now
The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
Don't let it kill you baby, don't let it get to you
Don't let 'em kill you baby, don't let 'em get to you
I'll be your breathin' heart, I'll be your cryin' fool
Don't let this go to far, don't let it get to you
Heh.
Oh yeah we're going to the laser show
Oh yeah we're going to the laser show
Come on baby now don't you know
We're going down to the laser show
They come from Bridgeport, Westport, Darien
Down to the Hayden Planetarium
We're gonna space out to our favorite tunes
We're going straight to the dark side of the moon
Oh yeah we're going to the laser show
Oh yeah we're going to the laser show
Come on baby now don't you know
We're going down to the laser show
We're gonna sit back, relax, watch the stars
James and Jason, Kirk and Lars
We're gonna make our way cross the galaxy
And then we'll head back home on the L.I.E.
ha ha.
I may borrow this phrase. Good article...thanks for the link. I saw FoW a few months ago and they played more than a couple songs from Utopia Parkway...not just WIM. They opened for Matchbox 20 so it was a good twofer. Matchbox 20 for my husband and FoW for me, then we both ended up enjoying the other one's preference too.
Apparently I agree about Fountains of Wayne.
Will take a big pass on Matchbox 20, though.
Isn't the singer for Matchbox20 the guy with the hole in his chin? Did that song with Carlos Santana a year or two back?
The ability to put on an show counts for something in my book. It's part of the package with live entertainment. My affections have been won and lost over live performances.
Oh, me too, no question. Studio and stage are quite distinct fields of expertise. Cher, for example, puts on one or the all-time shows. But the records -- I'll wait for a long time between plays. Real long time.
But for me, this only works with recordings. Art that I live with. Shows have increased my understanding and respect. But my affections have never been changed by them. Otherwise, I wouldn't like the Pretenders. And that would just be wrong.
(Actually, I have affection for Cher as a celebrity-personality, as this Golden Oldie attests.)
I don't know if I know any Matchbox20, but I liked that song with Carlos Santana.
Absolutely. I learned that loooooong ago when I saw the Beach Boys live. Gadzooks, they were horrible.
Are you saying I should be glad I never saw them? I'll keep that in mind. I'd hate to have that bubble burst.
There's lotsa variations. Filmed evidence indicates that in the 1960s the Beach Boys could be wondrous on stage. But by the time the mid-'70s rolled around, they were only innovators in the skill of Cynical Self-Recycling. So in this case, I think "horrible" is synonymous with "smug and coasting." In fact, that's it -- they stopped remembering to surf the coast and started coasting on the memory of surf.
You can never say never with shows, but the two times I say 'em it felt not like a terrific (or even good) plan that wasn't going right, but like somebody who didn't have a clue how to marshall and shape her material to knock out an audience. Both times, Chrissie repeatedly killed momentum in its crib.
That's Rob Thomas you're discussing, FYI.
Ah, but the audience did, see -- and had already paid their money. Especially in the later years, Mike Love became one of the all-time notorious a-holes on stage. There's some CD of "Jerky Performance Remarks" or suchlike and one of his rambling desecrations is the lead track.
We need some lyrics since this IS the jukebox...
Wouldn't it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong
You know its gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together
Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through
Happy times together we've been spending
I wish that every kiss was neverending
Wouldn't it be nice
Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true
Baby then there wouldn't be a single thing we couldn't do
We could be married
And then we'd be happy
Wouldn't it be nice
You know it seems the more we talk about it
It only makes it worse to live without it
But lets talk about it
Wouldn't it be nice
So sweet...so naive. I remember feeling that way once.
The dollar went down and the President said
“Who’s in charge, now?” I don’t know, take your pick.
A new disease every day and the old ones are coming back
Things are looking kind of gray, like they’re going to black
Don’t turn on the TV, don’t show me the paper
(I) don’t want to know he got kidnapped or why they all raped her
I want to go on vacation ‘till the pressure lets up
But they keep hijacking airplanes and blowing them up
(Refrain)
It’s been a hard day on the planet
How much is it all worth?
It’s getting harder to understand it
Things are tough all over on earth.
It’s hot in December and cold in July
When it rains it pours out of a poisonous sky
In California the body counts keep getting higher
It’s evil out there, man that state is always on fire.
Everyone has a system, but they can’t seem to win
Even Bob Geldorf looks alarmingly thin
I got to get on that shuttle get me out of this place
But there’s gonna be warfare up there in outer space
(Refrain)
I’ve got clothes on my back and shoes on my feet
A roof over my head and something to eat
My kids are all healthy and my folks are alive
You know, it’s amazing but sometimes I think I’ll survive
I’ve got all of my fingers and all of my toes
I’m pretty well off I guess, I suppose
So how come I feel bad so much of the time?
A man ain’t an island—John Dunn wasn’t lying
(Refrain)
It’s business as usual; some things never change
It’s unfair, it’s tough, unkind and it’s strange
We don’t seem to learn; we can’t seem to stop
Maybe some explosions would close up the shop
You know, maybe that would be fine: we would be off the hook
We resolved all our problems, never mind what it took
And it all would be over, finito, the end
Until the survivers started up all over again
(Refrain)
Heavenly shades of night are falling, it’s twilight time
Out of the mist your voice is calling, it’s twilight time
When purple-colored curtains mark the end of day
I’ll hear you, my dear, at twilight time
Deepening shadows gather splendor as day is done
Fingers of night will soon surrender the setting sun
I count the moments darling till you’re here with me
Together at last at twilight time
Here, in the afterglow of day, we keep our rendezvous beneath the blue
Here in the same and sweet old way I fall in love again as I did then
Deep in the dark your kiss will thrill me like days of old
Lighting the spark of love that fills me with dreams untold
Each day I pray for evening just to be with you
Together at last at twilight time
Here, in the afterglow of day, we keep our rendezvous beneath the blue
Here in the sweet and same old way I fall in love again as I did then
Deep in the dark your kiss will thrill me like days of old
Lighting the spark of love that fills me with dreams untold
Each day I pray for evening just to be with you
Together at last at twilight time
Together at last at twilight time
Have you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have
Have you ever felt a pain so powerful
So heavy you collapse
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if i could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad i haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get
Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess
Or has it ever come down to do or die
You've got to rise above the rest
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if i could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get
I'm not a coward,
I've just never been tested
I'd like to think that if I was,
I would pass
Look at the tested and think there but for the grace go
I might be a cowards,
I'm afraid of what I might find out
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if i could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad i haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
That's the impression that I get
I Don't Like Mondays
The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload.
And nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's going to make them stay at home.
And daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was as good as gold.
And he can see no reason
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.
The telex machine is kept so clean
As it types to a waiting world.
And mother feels so shocked,
Father's world is rocked,
And their thoughts turn to
Their own little girl.
Sweet 16 ain't so peachy keen,
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat.
They can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.
All the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with her toys a while.
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die.
And then the bullhorn crackles,
And the captain crackles,
With the problems and the how's and why's.
And he can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die?
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.
