This is strictly for non-political, fun conversation. It's alot easier to discuss things with someone when you realize you have some common interests, fishing, music etc. Besides, lets face it, politics gets old sometimes too :) Enjoy, Please, NO flaming, name calling etc. Have some fun!

I like the original better. Thanks for the info on the original artist.:)

The History Channel had a pretty good program last night about the legend surrounding King Arthur. If you like British history it was pretty interesting. I'd like to visit the UK and just a spend couple weeks finding places with Roman ruins.

I caught a little of it. My daughter wanted to play candyland and I couldn't resist. It looked pretty good though. I'm sure they'll re-rerun it. I'll have to try to catch it then.

Candyland was my little sisters favorite game. I can't count the hours I spent playing that with her.

Be nice to be out fishing today but I'm going to stick to the lakes and maybe the Mississippi for smallmouth for a couple months. Went last Saturday to a river over in Wisconsin and it was like fishing in Southeast Asia. All the rain had turned the banks into a thick, tall grassland. I shoulda brought a machete. A big snake slithered by me and crawled up the other side of the bank.

This July 4 weekend post your favorite song about America!

Rousing Anthems, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Lee Greenwood's song, all singing praises.

Well, too damn easy, in my book:

My favorite song about America is by Kris Kristofferson:

Busted flat in Baton Rouge/Waiting for a train/Feelin' near as faded as my jeans....

Me and Bobbie McGee is an allagory about America. All the glory and all the sadness. It can be sung a bunch of different ways. Bobbie can be a man or a woman. It can be blusey like Janis Joplin sang it. Around my hometown, bands would turn it into a little shuffle beat for everyone to dance. I couldn't stand that. There's too much pain in that song.

Searching, loss, busted dreams, freedom, hope and simple kindness. That's the story of America.

Happy Fourth everyone. On the road to freedom and dreams, may you find a cheerful trucker with dry cab, just before it rains.

My favorite patriotic tune;

There’s a black man with a black cat
Living in a black neighbourhood
He’s got an interstate runnin’ through his front yard
You know, he think, that he’s got it so good
And there’s a woman in the kitchen cleanin’ up the evening slop
And he looks at her and says: hey darling, I can remember when you could stop a clock

Chorus:
Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

Well there’s a young man in a t-shirt
Listening to a rockin’ rollin’ station
He’s got a greasy hair, greasy smile
He says: lord, this must be my destination
’cuz they told me, when I was younger
Boy, you’re gonna be president
But just like everyting else, those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

Chorus:
Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

Well there’s people and more people
What do they know know know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the gulf of mexico
Ohhh yeah
And there’s winners, and there’s losers
But they ain’t no big deal
’cuz the simple man baby pays for the thrills,
The bills and the pills that kill

Chorus:
Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

I guess there's a patriotic message in there somewhere. I always thought that song was kinda bleak.

In the 1984 election, Reagan's people wanted "Born in the USA" for a campaign song. Springsteen said no, and he said he didn't know whether to feel embarassed for himself or Reagan, because the man obviously didn't know what the song was about.

Mondale said "Bruce may have been born to run, but he wasn't born yesterday."

It's all how you take it I guess.  I'm kind of an optimist so It doesn't bum me out but it also doesn't try to fool me into thinking I'm living next door to Beaver Cleaver either.

Put a little of the "wrong element " on the CD player today. I mean of course, The Beach Boys. That was the band that Reagan's idiot of an Interior Secretary, James Watt wanted to see banned from giving free concerts on the Washington Mall every July 4. Watt wanted Wayne Newton instead.

They're coming out with a new album called "Smile" soon -- what's left of the Beach Boys, I mean. Brian Wilson was in the New York Times magazine today. You can't help but smile listening to the Beach Boys, even if the story of the band is sad.

"I try to get as close to paradise as I can (with my songs)," says Wilson. "I try to steer clear of heartbreaks."

Can't blame him for that.

I don't care much for the Beach Boys. Perhaps because although their tunes are catchy simple and fun, they've been played and replayed so much that you want to scream when you hear it. My Mom loved the Beach Boys and played them pretty much non-stop. It's hard to get in the surfing mode in January in Minnesota.

Both the bands helped write the bible for finely crafted, studio produced singles.

"Good Vibrations" was a masterpiece of layered sound and vocals.

Yep 100% Beach Boy Hating Commie :)

I don't dislike their music as much as I am tired of it. For instance I don't dislike Zeppelin or other "classic rock". I just can't take hearing it anymore. There's certain artists or songs I can hear many times and not tire of it, but certain ones I just can't hear one more time.

I've always found it sad when you see "Tonight only (insert group here) " And there's only one of the original 4 or 5 band members. McCartney without the rest is still McCartney. Although he's probably a bad example because he still packs in the big houses. It must be somewhat depressing for some of these guys to go from packing in 40,000 to the Bel Rae ballroom. Maybe they like it more I don't know.

I just can't take hearing it anymore.

Most of us can't stand those overplayed 'classics'.  That's why it baffles me on how KQ can still stay afloat.  Aren't their listeners dead yet?  Or is it more of a common ground when flipping stations while around others?  Who knows, I'd rather listen to a commercial on another station than be forced to partake in one more of those tired records.

I saw Mike Love of the Beach Boys in Amsterdam. He was the only one, so they had to call it The Beach Band.

There was a lot of infighting between those guys for awhile. Maybe it's been patched up.

"I just can't take hearing it anymore."

A lot of old rock 'n' roll should be allowed to die with some dignity, but I think the Beach Boys stuff can stand up over time.

You want to hear an old band that really has it together you should listen to the Allman Brothers now. Duane is dead, of course and Dicky Bettes isn't with them. But Greg is back and he's fairly straight in the head.

They also have a fantastic guitar player, Derek Trucks. He's the son of the drummer, Butch Trucks. Saw them on Freeview on DirectTV. I think they have a live concert DVD out.

I have to admit I still love the song Jessica. It's an old story but I crank it if I run across that tune. I don't listen to "classic rock" stations but run across them once and a while while scanning instead of using the old presets. I haven't listened to Tommy B in probably 5 years, I can't stand him. To each their own though.

I'd say it's the opposite...MOST people can't stand the idea of hearing music they aren't already familiar with.

Oh, technically it might be a "new" record they like...but nine times out of ten what they like about it is how much it sounds like some other record they have heard many times already.

Classic rock doesn't thrive for no reason.

Generally speaking, when people get married and settle down, whatever music they listened to just before marriage, they're stuck with for the rest of their lives. They stop taking chances.

Maybe many people see music as a frivilous affectation. The idea that a person might want to explore music all their lives is not really growing up to them.

My musical tastes have evolved. But even as early as high school. I was one of the only kids I knew listening to jazz, big band, metal, zeppelin etc. I still like new stuff as well as what I already know what I like.

The idea that a person might want to explore music all their lives is not really growing up to them.

Both good points. Very interesting.  It always fascinated me that the majority of my class still listens to the exact stuff that they did back 20-some years ago.  So do I at times, but my tastes have changed with new & different music evolving as well.  I would think the memory factor along with the musical comfort zone keeps KQ alive.  People really don't want surprises after we get older.

Although I love it when product packaging changes for the better.  It makes you wonder why it wasn't done that way all along.  Like certain new music.

Damn, And you thought catching a drumstick or guitar pick at a concert was a big deal. I've seen women flash the guys on stage but never this.

**** Warning, graphic pictures of a sexual nature inside.

Couple had sex on stage during concert

KRISTIANSAND/OSLO (TV 2 Nettavisen): As Kristopher Schau and his band Cumshots were in the middle of their concert; a young couple entered the stage, stripped and had sex.

Controversial Kristopher Schau loves to shock his audience, and few knew what was in store for them as they went to his concert at the Quart music festival. In the middle of the concert, a young couple entered the stage.

«How far are you willing to go to save the world?» asked the young man, and without much ado, the couple pulled off their clothes.

Cumshots provided the background music as the couple had intercourse right in front of the audience. A banner was raised on stage informing the audience that the couple was having sex to save the rainforest. After completing the intercourse, the couple received applause from the audience and disappeared.

The young couple, Tommy Hol Ellingsen, age 28, and Leona Johansson, age 21, are members of the environmental organization «F*** for Forest.» They have sex in public in order to put focus on the rainforest.

«Today’s environmentalists have become more politicians than idealists,» Ellingsen said to TV 2 Nettavisen. «We want to bring forth the message with attitude.»

According to the organization’s website, «“F*** for forest” are concerned youngsters, fighting to preserve the environment. We believe it is possible to use people’s need for sexuality as a way to raise money for nature.»

The goal is to take over the entire commercial porn industry and transfer all the money to protection of the environment,» Ellingsen explained.

My wife and I were waiting in line to buy Twins tickets Friday night. A guy walks up to me and says, "you want tickets?"

Immediately I think he's scalper and I try to brush him off. But he's insistant. Take some tickets. A couple of his buddies didn't show up. Shoves them in my hand.

They're Diamond Level tickets at $33 each. I was just shocked. "See you inside," he said.

So my wife and I watched the game from the 12th row above the Tiger dugout with Norm and Mitch. They were corporate tickets, so it was no loss to them. Norm does work with the company. Mitch is ritired and lives half a year in Scottsdale.

There's a whole different crowd in that area of the stadium.

Scholarship of 'The Simpsons'

'Simpsons' party proves you can watch TV and study English lit.

Chicago Tribune

Mmmmm, doughnuts.

Homer Simpson would have felt right at home at the Comix Revolution store in Evanston, Ill., recently. He could have spent the afternoon devouring the Krispy Kremes and Dunkin' Donuts piled atop the table in front of the cash register.

But he wouldn't have known what to make of the highbrow discussion going on between a Northwestern University professor and 40 or so people about censorship, satire and the arts.

It was probably just as well. They were talking about Homer and his family, and we all know how insecure he can get.

Northwestern's Bill Savage, a lecturer in the English department and an administrator in the dean's office, is one of the contributors to the new book "Leaving Springfield: The Simpsons and the Possibility of Oppositional Culture" (Wayne State University Press, $21.95).
