When Gary told me he had found Jesus, I thought, Ya-hoo! We're rich! But it turned out to be something different.

I consider myself a utilitarian, but think outside the proposed scopes of Mill

it depends on what you believe as to whether you believe there are absolutes

No. There are absolutes no matter what you believe.

You can only say that becuase you yourself have no clue. I don't think you have any idea what is right or wrong. I think you only know what you want.

Man: Is this the right room for an argument?
Other Man: (pause) I've told you once.
Man: No you haven't!
Other Man: Yes I have.
Man: When?
Other Man: Just now.
Man: No you didn't!
Other Man: Yes I did!
Man: You didn't!
Other Man: I did!
Man: You didn't!
Other Man: I'm telling you, I did!

I'm still waiting for you to provide the definition of this "one true morality" that you keep claiming, bodine.

your silence on providing what exactly this "one true thing" is is deafening.

You are unable or unwilling to understand, crabs. Suffice it to say there is right or wrong outside of what your little mind can comprehend.

No, I renounced it as fairy tales and hocus pocus. A by product as an ancient system of control, a way to control the populace and explain the unexplained

Why is it called the "moral majority" as opposed to the "moral superior"?

because no one system of morals is any better than the next

That just goes to show you that you don't comprehend Christianity as you think you do. But it does provide self control for believers and even a degree of self control for nonbelievers that are exposed to it. And that is a good thing.

No, this is a "croc":

And this is a crock:

And I believe the self-professed Christian was implying the scatalogical phrase "a crock of shit." Nice talk, jethro . . .

Not based on what I have seen from your posts.

Not me. But there are plenty of people that know more about it that either one of us. It is apparent that you have bought into the detractors and anti Christian bigots. They don't get it. They let their hate get in the way. Why do they hate? Because they feel guilty and they don't want to feel guilty. They would rather revel in their moral depravity.

One of the things that bothers me the most about fundamentalists is their belief that nobody will do the right thing unless they are threatened with eternal hellfire.

I am an agnostic, bordering on atheist, and I do things every day to help people, make their lives easier and make the immediate vicinity a better place simply because it's the right thing to do. I am motivated neither by the promise of eternal reward not the threat of eternal punishment, and I don't believe that any thinking person feels otherwise. That there is a significant percentage of the populace which believes that people must be coerced to do good is disturbing.

That and the promise of eternal life makes for good social order.

I am an agnostic, bordering on atheist, and I do things every day to help people, make their lives easier and make the immediate vicinity a better place simply because it's the right thing to do. In Demons world there is no right and wrong only perceptionI am motivated neither by the promise of eternal reward not the threat of eternal punishment, and I don't believe that any thinking person feels otherwise. Well then you are just an insensitive oaf that happens to be full of himself. That there is a significant percentage of the populace which believes that people must be coerced to do good is disturbing. It may well be true. But then truth disturbs you so much that sometimes you make believe it doesn't exist.

Tue, 05/11/2004 - 2:00 PM Permalink
pieter b

Why do you feel so threatened by someone doing the right thing just because it's the right thing to do, jethro? Why does that make me "an insensitive oaf that happens to be full of himself"?

I'm not trying to force people into my way of thinking, you are; that's being full of oneself. Your first response to my post -- "makes for good social order" -- seems to confirm the position of those who believe that religion by and large is not a search for truth but a means to control the masses.

Tue, 05/11/2004 - 5:45 PM Permalink
Damon

It is apparent that you have bought into the detractors and anti Christian bigots

I have done no such thing. My beliefs on Christianity and religion are my own and not subject to anyone else's influence

In Demons world there is no right and wrong only perception

I made no such proposition

pieter, I couldn't have said either of your posts better myself
