Anyone know of a good yet free macro program? I'm using one now to automatically input my font info but, I've used better ones in the past but can't remember what they were.
Also, is ATT broadband 2 way? Meaning, do I need to use my phone line for upstream? I used to have a cable modem years ago but it would upload through the phone line. They supposedly were working on two way to remove the need to tie up your phone line.
I gotta do something this week about my internet connection.
good luck with it, jt. actually at the moment my brother and his housemate are considering going with the cable modem service too, if only things were looking a little more up work-wise.
THX - you'll love it. Where it's available, I can't think of anything better.
After being used to the speed of the broadband internet, and then being up north this weekend on a dialup connection, I'm seriously thinking of doing the satellite thing...but only seriously thinking until the reality of the $$$ crashes in. No cable available there.
i hear ya both, terry and jt, it was hell for the less than 24 hours my connection was out here when i changed over to visi having to go over a dial-up connection.
THX - Do you already have active cable in the house? If so, the ATT guy should be in and out in a matter of a few minutes. If you have cable wired - but not active - take note of this:
If he has to go to the pole to turn it on, be sure he comes back in and checks the line inside again. We had to have them out a second time because 1) we have satellite here but used ot have cable so we were wired, but not active. 2)whatever they switched on out on the pole, didn't activate in the house.
If we had been wise, we would have had the guy recheck the line here. Instead he left, we spent some time on the phone with the tech support folks before we figured out we weren't getting a signal.
We haven't paid for our Qwest internet service for about 5 months now. They quit billing us before we switched to anything else. They can't find us to turn it off - we've called, they've searched, nothing doing. At least we're not getting charged. No wonder they're in doo-doo.

No active cable although cable was in the house at one time. They're gonna have to install a new line to where the PC is.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure he checks it before he leaves.
How do you access your qwest e-mail? I used to get mine thru Outlook Express. I started getting errors at the same time as when I could no longer get online.
well, aside from the fact that i don't really access it because i don't really get anything there......
i pull in mail every nite from the 3 places i've got active email accounts: at the u, at qwest, and at visi. nice little script called fetchmail that connects to either the pop or imap servers to do the job. when it can't authenticate my password it tells me. it hasn't told me.
THX - I suppose they had you do this...but just in case.
Try unplugging the modem - and leave it unplugged for at least two minutes. Reboot the computer and then plug the modem back in.
We've had to do that once here to reset the thing when it lost the signal. Worked like a charm.
Another hint: If you go the router way vs. the hub connection, you can get multiple computers hooked to that router for no extra dollars. If you use the hub, it costs an extra $10 a month.

Yeah, I tried that about a half dozen times (Probably more like a dozen). :-)
See, I was sure it wasn't the actual cable cuz I was right there when the guy tested the signal, so I knew for sure the cable was working. I just knew it!
Well, just for the heck of it I finally tried plugging the cable into a TV again and.........no signal!

Yeah, I thought about it but, it's not worth the extra money right now. Maybe in the future. We've got two computers but the second one is mostly a toy for the kids.
i don't worry too much about banner ads. if i did, i'd actually put my proxy server here to good use. i despise pop-up ads. i use this little guy(the free version) to block pop-ups. it even goes so far as to prevent opening another i.e. window without disabling it.
this one, bill, doesn't block the ad. it completely blocks new web browser windows from opening up, so it doesn't need updates. i do kinda wish i didn't have to turn it off though to intentionally open multiple windows. but hey, you get what you pay for.

AT&T is two way. The modem connects to the cable line. You don't need your phone line at all.
I really like it. It's faster than the DSL we have at work. I'm sold.
You can either purchase the modem or lease it.
Thanks Terry! Maybe I'll call today.
:-)
thx, the high speed internet addict :)

You'll have to let me know about cable. I'm leaning in that direction, but won't be doing anything until November when our existing contract is up.
Ares, you've got mail.
I've had cable before and loved it except that when I had it, the upstream was through the phone line so it would tie up the phone line.
I've made up my mind and am going to go with the Cable instead of DirecPC. DirecPC is just too expensive.

I got my cable modem last night! Now to see when ATT can come and set me up!
excellent, thx.
Not until next Wednesday!
Oh well. I'll be rid of Qwest & MSN so, I'm happy.

wow. 3 months later i can still get email at qwest.net.......
it hasn't shown up on my qwest bill, bud. which is a good thing for qwest's customer service peeps.

I'm looking at Sony's Vaio desktop computers...
Anyone know anything about them?
hey, where's thx? wasn't his cable modem supposed to get hooked up today?
I talked to him yesterday while he was at work. Sounded like he was pretty busy.

I got a bum modem. I gotta take it back and get a new one!
that sucks. big time.
I'm sure you know exactly how I feel right now. At least I have the day off and can deal with it.
I've had the weirdest problems trying to install this thing.
I hook it up to the USB port and it tells me that it found new hardware. Trouble is the hardware it's finding is "Wave device for sound".
Crazy stuff!
rule the first when installing usb hardware: install the software that came with the thing first. then after you reboot, plug it into the usb port.
Well, that's another part of the weirdness. It wouldn't allow me to install it without connecting it.
I think I'm gonna go with an Ethernet option instead. I didn't want to go through installing it but, might as well now.
Now no signal and they have to have someone come out tomorrow. After 5 phone calls to tech support I about pitched a fit.
There was a signal there yesterday when the guy was out here. I saw it myself! We hooked it up to a TV to verify but, not today!
ARRRGGGGHHHHH!
oh that's a nice touch.

satellite's starting to look pretty good then, huh?
Finally up & running @ 2.2 megabits
:: jealous ::
but i won't trade my dsl for anyting.
I'm just glad to be free of 56k

Lucky sod. Greetings from the slow lane.
you can't get cable or dsl, frosti?
hmm, sod. that's a bit british, isn't it?
I don't think DSL is so great, at least not ours. It freezes up every four or five clicks.

There's something wrong then cuz, I never had problems with my DSL.
Greetings from the slow lane.
I remember when I switched from 28.8 to 56k. I thought it was amazing! :-)
Now that I've had the fast lane I don't think I can live without it.
Too bad they don't give a "Money Back Guarantee" with those flu-shots.
;-)

i've got to have at least 6 when i'm at work. so i turn it off, open the 6 and turn it back on again.

That's a good solution.
btw: What do you use as a firewall at home?
