I think I would be amiss if I din't point out that there is an extremely interesting link between "Ad infinitum" and "circular thinking."

I am curious to see where everyone is thinking it is hidden this year. To me it seems way too general, but it would be nice to go treasure hunting this weekend!

Could be...also could be the statue of F Scott Fitzgerald on the corner of 5th and Market in rice park...anything is possible!

Hi, Im new here to this website but I am convinced its in Mounds park. There are the mounds that are circular and private ground you cannot go in but can go around them. The man of steel who isnt real is Earl Street that runs perpendicular into Mounds blvd. which runs East and west. And at Earl there is a playground. Mounds Bluff used to be called Bluffs Playground way back in the early 1900s. it also hasnt been there since 1987.

yay! new ideas to ponder! could this keep us from going completely insane? for some of us, like me, it is much too late indeed

Where was everyone last night? I hit a bunch of parks but I didn't see too many people.

OH MY GOD IM GOING TO BE in a padded cell soon!

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:08 PM Permalink
Katie Leahy

Thanks. I think it is also in either a dove soap box or an icecream box, according to the peaceful bird, and the base i think that refers to the bottom of something like a sign or merry go round for instance probably not the field that would be too easy.

OK, i'm back, had to actualy work for a bit. So what makes earl a man of mettle?

Good to meet you all last night!

Iz - I don't think you're the only one for which it is too late.....Alot of us seem to be addicted......LOL

Boy I wish I was the clue writer. It would be so fun to monitor this site and laugh at all the strange connections we make. And the longer we analyze a clue the more strange they get.

yes, yes indeed...I need padded walls...or just someone to drag me kicking and screaming from this awful keyboard.

katie- I agree with you on the dove thing..that was my first instinct as well

earl is just a mans name which the sign is made of steel, that is what that part referrs to Mettle is courage which I havent quite got maybe the indians were courageous?

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:11 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

In my experience its not unusual for the clues to mean exactly what it sounds like they mean as the clue writer doesn't seem to be as deceitful as we like to think. So I think off base does probably refer to softball fields, which in and of itself is not a terribly limiting clue.

gotta go - be back in about 15 minutes.

need to put my youngest(1 1/2) medallion hunter down for a nap. He is only partial help during the hunt because he is not able to shovel, but he tries to eat the snow as the rest of us ponder and shovel. LOL He will be a master at this medallion hunt stuff when he reaches our ages.

talk to you all soon.

I was thinking a fire pit perhaps. "fettle" could also refer to a hearth.

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:12 PM Permalink
Katie Leahy

Fettle means Fit doesnt it

Allison - I agree with you on that one. Definately a baseball/softball reference.

Has anyone considered James J. Hill as the "man of steel"?

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:14 PM Permalink
izzyardo

uh...I dunno, I'm only a teenager, I could be wrong. I'm begining to think that riding around in a circle coud be a merry-go-round

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:14 PM Permalink
Number 27

Well, just got back from battle creek, i think it is there regaurdless of what anyone says! i stoped at hidden falls, como, and phalen also....i have to strech the clues to fit those parks...they all fit to battle creek...i am going to focus my efforts there intill somthing cant fit there....

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:14 PM Permalink
Katie Leahy

think the merry go round is right as well but its near the BASE of it

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:15 PM Permalink
ThoseMedallingKids

The "off base" clue could keep us from digging up baseball and softball infields, which was the case at Conway two years ago. That was a mess...

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:15 PM Permalink
ares

I don't know aw, step, my first thought about being off-base was military. haven't thought of jj hill as the steel man, he was a railroad robber baron; but andrew carnegie crossed my mind, and he funded quite a few of the libraries in the city (step, you're close enough to arlington hills. walk in, turn around, look up above the door "carnegie library").

Ares - AHHHH there are so many people it could be. I'm going nuts here!!!

Fri, 01/26/2001 - 3:21 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I think the man of mettle is who we want, and he probably has nothing to do with metal.

I think the riding around takes up a lot of space, and thus is something bigger than a carousel.

And I don't think its in Battle Creek. You can make the clues fit using different parts of the park, but they never come together anywhere. Nor do I believe the man of mettle is a knight or Larry Ho.

And MCKNIGHT was the leader or the board of directors in the early days of 3m, he helped turn around the company when it was failing...he pushed to build the lab on the grounds of the 3m center...he had lotts of mettle

It does say "look for his name around our deal" If we don't read too much into it, we might be looking for a street.
