At work, there is a box with one regular phone jack, which is connected to the phone. There are two network type jacks, with one connected to an office computer (cat 5). The other is vacant. Can I just plug into there, and be online?

If I connect a modem to a phone line, in the office, and use a dial-up, can anyone tell that it's not just a regular phone call?
answer to dumb question # 1. try plugging in the computer into the other jack and see if it still works. if it does, then you can probably connect. you may have to screw with the ip address settings on the other computer, and you may do some things that get your admin's mad at you but it *should* work. disclaimer: i assume no responsibility if it doesn't
answer to dumb question # 2: if its a digital phone, you may fry your modem. if it looks like a normal phone, and feels like a normal phone, and you could bring in your own phone from home to plug in there, you can probably plug your modem in and no one would be the wiser.
