Clue Master

Here's what AW's list looks like so far

It's time to rate the parks once again for the 2009 Treasure Hunt.

This is something I do each year as a sort of prediction. In the

past, this list has been more accurate than my interpretation of the

clues has been! Looking back, it seems I started this list in 2001.

Of course that year I dismissed Como as having been too recent. I

made the same mistake in 2003. However in the other years I had

Merriam ranked with 3 stars in 2002, Phalen with 4 stars in 2004,

Crosby with 3 stars in 2005, Battle Creek with 4 stars in 2006,

Hidden Falls with 4 stars in 2007, and Indian Mounds with 4 stars in

2008. So hopefully this list might prove to be useful.

We do have snow this year, and yet what is out there isn't terribly

deep. I haven't been out digging yet, but I suspect what is out

there is rather difficult to get through thanks to all the melting

and refreezing. Consequently it could be anywhere on the ground and

it would still be hard to dig up and find. The problem is we don't

know if the cluewriter knew that before choosing a spot. It's also

quite likely that there is a new cluewriter this year. That

potentially throws some conventional wisdom out the window.

Unfortunately what that all ads up to, moreso this year than in other

recent years, is that it really could be anywhere. Still, I'll

gather the forces of the universe together and pare down the

possibilities for you.

Looks like some of my stars got converted to bullet points. I still think it would be cool to do this as one of those stock market type things like they have during an election. Unfortunately I don't know of any that let you set up your own. Here's a link explaining it though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prediction_market

I think it would be cool, but I also do not know of any that let you use their template so to speak.

I always thought that those prediction markets/mock stock market games are inherently flawed to a minor extent due to the fictional aspect of it.

Just like any scientific test can never be 100% accurate due to the tester changing the outcome himself unknowingly. (Cant remember the proper name of that principle)

As a researcher, I have to remind myself every step of the way not to get biased. It is really difficult, because we read and learn things, and clinical trials results can look promising, and then we get so excited about how much this might help people. But have to sit back, watch that the data is being gathered properly, no fraud is occuring, and up front make sure the study was designed to truly work and has sufficient power to prove the results - that is - enough study subjects. If the condition occurs in 1/1000 and only 300 are enrolled, the results don't mean a thing.

    Eags, What do you research?

Do you remember the name of the principle I am talking about?

I used to be underwater in math and science when I was in grad school but some things have slipped from me.

I do medical device research. Worked for a urology company for ten years, have been working on my own for the past several years, mostly doing literature review and summary, but also can do pretty much anything related to clinical trials. Will be teaching a medical device workshop in New Brighton on 1/22.

I don't remember the name of the principle. A quick google search didn't really get me anything solid either. Will see if it comes back to me and will post again if it does.

I do recall reading an article awhile back, but probably didn't bookmark it...

We always joke about Tony Schmidt, wouldn't that be a hoot if it's there this year? It's not even in the park pool. HEHEHE

I think you're talking about the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. It basically says you can't measure something without changing it.
    Mon, 01/12/2009 - 6:52 PM Permalink

Yes, that looks to be exactly what I had in mind. Though it looks like signing up for it and participating in it might be a bit more complicated than I pictured. Still, it would be a cool thing to have during the hunt as people buy and sell shares of each park based on their interpretations of the clues.

I always wonder a bit at drive-through ATMs with signs that say "no walk ups" and then they have braille on the keypads. I also wonder about signs at store entrances saying "seeing eye dogs allowed".

The drive-through at Wells Fargo down the hill from me has a sign on it welcoming everyone to use it, even walk ups.

    Cluey,

I would open up the list for more spots. I was just looking on Arden Hills and Shoreview's websites the other day and they have huge parks. There are really a lot of big parks in Ramsey county. I kind of liked the fact it was in Roseville. New parks to explore.

I guess odds wise I would rather pick a big park outside of St. Paul rather than a tiny park/rec center in city limits.
    Tue, 01/13/2009 - 1:05 PM Permalink
    me2

I think you can pick ANY park in Ramsey County on the park pool.

It's just the last person gets all thats left in the county.
    Tue, 01/13/2009 - 2:08 PM Permalink
    mrmnmikey

I agree with me2. You don't have to pick something on the list. You can pick any park thats not alraedy taken in ramsey county when it's your turn. The last pick gets everything thats left. I though it took a while to sell 30 spots last year, so not sure if you wanna do more than that.

although, a couple years ago I ventured outside of ramsey co. and took THE Park @ MOA....

I was at the end of the list anyways....

I think the park picks should have a few more like 5 more and keep with the same rules as last year and the year before!!!

but then if we dont sell out we can ask if anyone wants a sec one I would like to get a sec one some year eavny If I pick Number 1!!!

Maybe do a more detailed guessing pool - kinda like that thread I started at the PP site - Guess What Clue, What Park, What Item it is found in. (We can leave it up to the judges who comes closest on that last one) It may make your picks more interesting.

The other thing that may happen is that NO ONE gets any of them right which would mean carrying over the pot to next year!

If I remember correct from last year, there were people who wanted in but there were no more numbers. Why not just have 40 available this year.

If you want in on the park pool find CM - thats all there is to that. He wants to party too so I'm sure he wants them all sold fast so he can enjoy the rest of the evening. He's got people to dance with. chop chop - get to predig on time and buy your #.

People to dance with? Oh, I thought something else. Now what am I going to do with my stack of ones?

BTW: I have that poster printed on adhesive film to put in Matty B's window. Problems is, with today's weather - that glue will go from sticky to frozen in about 3 seconds. I may wait until tomorrow to see if the weather gets slightly better.
