I'm going for holders mainly. Hit a garage sale this fall where the woman was a rep and she was quitting and sold her inventory. Bought a ton of candles for 50. each!
I love candles too...but too many of them are scented and the scent does not like my sinuses. Why can't they make cute, colored, pretty candles that aren't scented?
I first need to know what kind of roses are they? Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Grandifloras, Rugosa, or shrub (hardy or tender). Â Â Â Â The first mistake is using leaves, they tend to mat down on you. They can start with a layer of leaves a couple feet deep and by the end of winter that same pile will compress down to a couple inches. And let's say they stay dry through the winter and don't mat down. Compared to other products to mulch with, the leaves have way too much airspace to use by themselves. Use hay (preferable) or straw to cover, way better insulating qualities. Â Â Â Â The first thing is to take note of where the graft is (if they are non-hardy varieties). This is the large knob on the stem or canes where the preferred bush is grafted onto a hardy rootstock. If it is above ground, cover it with a mound of soil, just heap it up, making sure to cover a good 3 inches surrounding the graft, stuff the rest with your hay or straw. Then cover with your rosecone. Â Â Â Â The cones are not the best thing in the world. The drawback is you have to cut back your bush to fit inside the cone. If you do use them, surround the cones with bags of leaves for added protection. Â Â Â Â The above method is does not fully insure against loss, but it will minimize it. To get 100%, use the Minnesota Tip method. You don't have to bury them singly, you can dig a trench however length and bury them a few at a time. The most important thing to remember is to protect that growth above the crown. That is the rose bush that is desired. Â Â Â Â As far as cutting them back? Depends on the category of rose. Try to leave as much as possible, you can cut off the dead next spring (if you're in doubt) when the growth resumes. I prefer to see approx. 14-16 inches above the graft. This is also a good opportunity to shape your rosebush also.
now for the clue- when I talked to LL on the phone to hear the clue my first thoughts were Phalen/BC/Hidden
and I was thinking I couldnt even believe a 'battle' clue got past me! American civil.
and the ARCade entrance at Phalen-then when I got home I thought that there was already a st. clue so that couldnt be it.
out of those 3 parks you can actually park along the street at 2 of them- Phalen (Wee-lock) you cannot! so I was thinking maybe taking a drive out there- THEN...
I got on the computer and actually glanced at the clue- mind you I havnt read it deep yet...as soon as I saw the Arc the first thing I thought of was Swede BUT I went over the guide and thoughts about Swede earlier thisafternoon and it didn't look right -that was when I thought of the 45 degree thing again and thought a HILL isnt precise enough for David and his style of clue writing -when he says 45 degree angle he means just that! Like the pyramid tops at Cherokee - but obviously Cherokee is out at this point cause you can still park on Cherokee Heights Blvd. even when its closed- but not those shelter angled tops like in Hidden Falls, those are not quite 45 angles. So I went from hills at Swede to thinking those are too steep to an EXACT angle.
The Arc he mentioned is similar to the Archer Sagitarius -that got me thinking clearer on that- that an Archer was NOT an Arch!
Really? Who's out there? I guess if it were the winter carnival hunt we'd be out there...but I remember one other mock hunt that we were out in Mounds and being there alone is way different than being out there with hundreds of other hunters.
Just here on the forum. Nothing in the skies here. From what I'm reading, the impact from the last CME was rather glancing and didn't produce a lot of auroral storming.
But the moon is gorgeous! Hope we have this kind of clear skies and great view tomorrow night for the eclipse.
Hi me2's husband! I have hybrid teas and floribundas in the same garden, staggered so it is difficult to trench them. The grafts are under ground but only an inch or so. I also have a row of Rugosas that are new this year. Have never tried to winter these. They are on the south side of my house. Those I can trench. I guess I'll pile more dirt around the others and use straw. I hate cleaning the straw out in the spring, but I guess it's better than the alternative. I was considering buring them in leaves so I appreciate the information. Thanks alot for your help. And with any luck at at all we'll have a mild winter! Now, about my zone 3 tree. Just kidding. :)
Terry, you asked what the 45 thing was. AW's clue says, "So you think it'd be neat if I were to give you a street." Ian had pointed out that there is an A Street at the top of Battle Creek Park. You can find it at Map Quest. And the lattitude there is 44.9 degrees, or round that out to 45 degrees. You people are talking about a 45 degree angle, but he doesn't say angle, he says, "look for something at a fairly consistent 45 degrees."
Nice try on trying to throw us off NL. Good job LL. I just got on but I would of gone out with you if I was on earlier and seen your post. I've just been too much of a whimp lately to head out there since that night that Alibabas and I got all cold and wet looking for the thing. I should of waited until it was narrowed down a bit. E-gram me if ya wanna hook up Saturday. I'll prolly head out about noon.
P.S. - You guys see they moved the Salvation Army kettle this year? Just an FYI. I actually used that as part of a personal noodle on this hunt.
I might go out today, I have to take my step-daughters friend home shortly before noon so maybe me and her will tag along, I'm sure hubby will be busy watching the busch race at noon :)
If you arrive after dark, there may be nowhere to park,  But that won’t keep a stout hunter away from the treasure.  Did you overlook your mark before following the arc?  Well then walk down the trail to search at your leisure.
last night I got thinking about the 'down the trail' thing-and it didnt make sense with HF or Swede - you actually go down in those parks but via STEPS not a path. and Phalen you walk into it not down into it- so that left BC. well- I am taking kids to karate now, then maybe pop out there later today- goodluck you guys-at this point one of you should find it! hint hint LL & CM! -you two are due here yah know- I would say Terry too but she isnt even in town. so with the 3 points made in the last 12 hours we got A st. - going down into the park via a path - 45 degrees --
OT- first -I love candles too- we buy only from partylite/cape cod but I have plenty right now
2nd - you can always e-mail questions straight to Linders- they have to check their e-mails daily and get back to everyones questions. Just go to Linders.com and find the links to ask questions- chances are you will get Mark anyhow :)
Thanks for the info me2. Linders will probably be hearing from OT alot next summer! The two gals they have working the sattelite store in SSP are wonderful too, know alot about plants, etc. And thank you Mark for taking the time to help me out.
Sometimes its harder than you would thing to write 'easy' clues, because when you look at your own clues, they all look easy to get, because you obviously know what they mean.
they all look easy to get, because you obviously know what they mean.
But people have been getting them. They just haven't figured out they've been getting them and put it all together in the right way. So I still don't feel too bad.
I'm heading out again, and I will actually be completely unavailable between 3 and 5pm in case someone happens to find it during that time.
I'll prolly be heading out sometime soon too. I accidentally deleted a couple of registry files that are causing a number of problems for me. I see I have a new message but can't open it. If it's you LL, I'll see ya out there. Somewhere by the 45 degrees.
Watson Park? Where's that?
Battle Creek lower park? Off of 61? Don't they close the lot down?
They close phalen and hidden falls too
I'm going for holders mainly. Hit a garage sale this fall where the woman was a rep and she was quitting and sold her inventory. Bought a ton of candles for 50. each!
Carlos Avery? Is that the one off of Shepherd Road? That closes.
I love candles too...but too many of them are scented and the scent does not like my sinuses. Why can't they make cute, colored, pretty candles that aren't scented?
I bet there's a Watson Park somewhere - just not in St. Paul.
I know Terry. I can't even walk into those candle shops. But for some reason the smell doesn't bother me when I burn them.
what parks can you see the stroh brewery from?
Dinner is ready here. BBIAB
swede hollow has a double stone arch bridge and I would have to say the steep hill could be a fairly consistant 45 degree angle.
Now my only problem is fitting in the rest of the clues :(

stout-beer? which a couple of you mentioned- for Swede
& walk down in- which you can do at both
I heard there is someone out in one of those parks tonight-
brrrrrrrrrrr
goodnight
kids are dragging me to watch Finding Nemo (saw it at the Inver Grove drive-in)

It's late and it looks like I'm talking to myself, so I'm heading up myself now. Only spent $30 at the candle party so I'm very proud of myself!

... and Terry's laughing at us all ...
Actually, Ian, I'm not laughing at all! I can hardly wait until I can post tonight's clue and get back into the noodling.
Tonight's clue narrows it down though I believe, unless I'm missing something.
cool! I can't wait! I wanna clue!!!!!!!
OH! And I got A JOE!
just reposting
