Look, We always welcome new hunters. But we want you to PARTICIPATE in the deciphering of clues. That means getting in these discussions on Day 1 and helping with google searches, looking up local history, looking up words in the dictionary, going to parks (any park) to look around for ideas, and just brainstorming. At this point all the veterans know where to look and are out looking, I was for 2 hours this morning but had to come back for a nap.(I work nightshift) So nobody is too eager to spoon feed the clues to all the late comers who lurk on message boards ready to reap from everyone's work. Go back a couple of hundred posts, look at all the theories and look long and hard at your Hudson Street Atlas. The clues elude to what is in and adjacent/next to/ around the park.

Happy Hunting and remember the true treasure hunter's motto...Search, Don't destroy

HOCKEYFAN

DID YOU REALLY THINK THAT THE EVERY DAY AND I MEAN EVERY DAY HOCKEY FAN WAS NOT GONNA TRY AND FIND THIS THING?? YOU GUYS ARE GREAT AT FIGURING THIS STUFF OUT AND I THINK ITS AMAZING. I ALSO HAVE BEEN SEARCHING COMO, PHALEN, HIGHLAND PARK, RICE PARK--JUST TO LOOK. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO LOOK FOR-JUST OUT LOOKING. SO CHILL A MOMENT. I AM SURE THAT LAST MINUTE MEDALIAN SEEKERS DO JUST WHAT YOUR COMPLAINING ABOUT ALSO. BUT I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING SINCE MONDAY. SO DON'T POST YOUR IDEAS IF YOU DON'T WANT ANYONE TO READ THEM. MAYBE I HAVE BEEN HIT WITH THE HOCKEY PUCK ONE TIME TO MANY TO FIGURE ALL THESE CLUES OUT MYSELF.

Chilllllll....don't get pissy. I wasn't dissing YOU specifically. I just have noticed all the new members in the last day and a half (at least 100)and all the lurkers. (who's here, but don't post). It just get's a little annoying when after 6 days of not sleeping or eating right, endless research and message board posts, sore feet and wrong leads, and someone new pops on the message board on the second to the last day and says "So where do you guys think it is?" It like....come on figure it out or at least go back and take some time and READ all the posts.

Thanks cluemaster, We are not trying to be exclusive. Just alittle stingy with free info at this point of the hunt. No hard feelings though. We love to see new people get sucked into our vortex of treasure hunt addiction.

I got hooked 3 years ago. I dam near walked over the medallion in Como and BAM I'm hooked.

I will give you this info for where to look. This excerpt is from the "Treasure Hunter's Guide" I highly recommend getting one. Has maps of most of the parks and detailed info. You can get one at www.treasurehunt.8m.com .

Of course this info is for the medallion hunt, but I think most applies here.

"The treasure is hidden in the snow, not in the soil. In will NEVER be hidden on a roof, NEVER up a tree, NEVER in or near a trash can, NEVER on a pond or lake, NEVER near anything that will electrocute you, NEVER near Highland park water towers, NOR any common golf course."

Also it would NEVER be anywhere where someone could possibly hurt themselves. (steep hills or bluffs, como zoo, caves) Also note years when there is no snow they usually hide the medallion in a large park with alot of woods. It's not going to be where someone could accidentally find it, like where all the park users hang. So you have to get off the beaten path.

What are you looking for? Not exactly sure...they say a flag. I guess it could be some plastic item with a flag on it. What ever it is, it will be hidden IN something. Something red and green plastic is suppose (Clue #2 ) Basically pick up everything you see and look in it.

I can't speak for all of the "newbees" but I know I was not able to post until yesterday. So I know that it is frustrating that people are willing to look but not share.

I just bought my hunters guide yesterday and it came with a more detailed cd of Mounds Park. I guess he is upgrading the books to a diffrent format. I am going to hop in the shower and get ready to do some serious noodling and then go out. I will see what I can find with that cd and if there are any add clues. He had pictures of all the dedicated benches maybe their is aclue there. The book is great ever hunter should own one.

I will keep you posted...cya soon

What is everyone thinking? I'm new to this site, and I'm still getting used to the navigation. I feel like I'm missing the correct forum...

I was looking at Indian Mounds yesterday, I'll give you some reasons and you can tell me if I'm crazy. I can't make them all fit, but here goes.

Clue 6: "Think of Dylan and what he could deliver" - He sang a song called Highway 61 Revisited (I think that was the name). Hwy. 61 borders the park. I don't know where a Wonderful Life fits yet. I'm guessing they're referring to the movie w/ James Stewart as George Bailey. "Too much heat might really be neat" - Burns Ave. which also borders the park.

Clue 5: "A president or two will give you a clue So will a governor of capitol renown

A school of hockey fame will also help your game" - Johnson Pkwy. runs into the park, two Johnson presidents, Johnson governor of MN, St. Paul Johnson High School used to be a hockey power I think...

"It's been said that candy is really quite dandy And we're certainly inclined to concur

But then again liquor is alleged to be quicker" - Mound St. runs into the park, reference to Mounds candy bar? I can't place the liquor reference.

Clue 4: "To be our winner consider a place for beginners Then start moving up and around

As you hit your stride search for a heavenly guide That's actually in the ground" - "place for beginners", I think there is a school on one side of the park, or reference to the playground for kids, aka - beginners? Search for a heavenly guide - there is an aircraft radio beacon tower in the park.

"Next do something big and look for a famed pig

From a spot with a long view of history" - You can see Pig's Eye Lake from the park. Also a good view of downtown St. Paul could be reference to a long view of history.

Clue 3: "A place of improvement with varieties of movement Is near where the thing is secreted

Look also for bikers and maybe some hikers" - place of improvement could be the school or all of the running and biking trails which fits better with varieties of movement.

"A save of sorts but not in sports Might give you cause for reflection" - view of 1st Bank bldg. in downtown St. Paul, a bank is a place to save?

Clues 1 and 2 don't do much for the park, anyone have ideas?

Good Luck

Obviously, my searches at Mounds this morning did not turn up anything. But we probably didn't stay as long as we should have. It was very early, and we were very tired, and it was very cold. If this thing goes to seven clues, what's the odds that it'll still be around by 4 AM? That's the earliest I can get out to Mounds tomorrow.

AT LAST!!! I CAN POST. I have tried many times and registered and reregistered and Kitch disguised as Dr. Clue gave me great advice. I was only able to post by replying to individuals with my ideas...but not to the group at large (which turns out for everyone..very good since I would have had you scrambling around Como looking at the pig Hamm from toystory... or running high in Highland because of Circus jueventas and a place for beginners (the first medallion hunt was found on west 7th (not far from the Famous Dave's pig and the Pearson's candy and.... see how lucky you are only some ofyou got my noodles. !!!) I was out at Mounds yesterday and this morning early early..and then again this afternoon. It's the DEKE that's getting me.something is amiss with the clues.. I guess tonight will tell.. unless of course a squirrel ran off with the loot. edible flag perhaps..Been hunting a long time... can't seem to do anything other than either sit on the medallion from day 2 (last year) or never get the right park! Anyway. Thanks for the patience. I finallly emailed the web guy..or someone who said that my spam blocker must have been stoping my email response and that I was registered as all the people and he has removed them and now I can post! SEE! Good luck tonight. If it's not found tonight I am out of it. Looking at 11:30 but then heading out at 6am for the St Paul Inline marathon. !

I was out at Mounds this afternoon and I saw the beacon...my though is that that is the heavenly guide? I feel like the clues are leading us to what appears out side of the park? I guess we will just have to come back this evening.

Definitely. the heavenly beacon is the tower.. And as for save...time for reflection...you can see the bank.. from the park and needless to say, on every bench/wall etc.. someone has written Jesus SAVEs! hence time for reflection. or paint! Not much more to say about the clues..however.. DEKE considered... how about BURNS park?

Speaking of HEAT and HOT. Look what's coming!

Isn't the east end of Mounds a "forest reserve"? Reserve=save.

Saw lots and lots of folks in Mounds near Clarence and Burns today. Lots of them quite unfriendly, as if by responding to my "hi" they'd be giving away some of their knowledge.

It seems likely to me that the flag has been found by now if it was somewhere in those woods on the eastern end of Mounds. Don't the rules say that you get a bonus prize -- a signed jersey and hockey stick -- if you turn the flag in on Sunday w/ all the published clues? Assuming that's true, whoever has the flag is probably just waiting until Sunday to turn it in.
Sat, 08/20/2005 - 6:28 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

if they follow standard hunt rules, you're supposed to turn it in ASAP, not wait. Think of all the people that would be ticked knowing someone found it a day ago and they spent all day hunting it for nothing. Unfortunately if that's the mindset of a person unfamiliar with the hunt, then that's possible it could happen.....

Wonder if I should head down and watch the 11:30 pandemonium?

At this point I don't feel like I should hunt the thing as I'm late to the physical search game, would much rather see it go to someone that's done the footwork for it. Plus I'm not a big sports fan so most of the prize would be wasted on me... Bout all that hits my interest would be the 500 best buy gift card.

Trust me our group was nowhere near the picnic grounds. We were at the east end of the park, near OBB's bar. (Clarence St.) I think there were some sort of family reunion up there - tons of cars but nobody looking.

I also saw a couple of very large groups picknicing today (and well into dusk, too!) It's ugly when people don't have enough respect for property (or integrity of their own) to clean up when they're done. Grrr.

Anyway, just to set the record straight...anyone I know in the Cooler Crew would never exhibit that type of behavior. In fact, last year after the Crosby hunt, several crew members spent hours "cleaning up" the mess (left by others) in the park. Also, someone from the PP did eventually show up and verify the flag with Timmers...press conference tomorrow morning...

It was a great hunt! Night all...

Yeah there were alot of people up there. When I came back at about 6:00, I came in on Earl St and I saw all the cars and I was like "oh my god, it is going to be the mayhem of a medallion hunt" Tons of people, but most were picnicing, a few looked like they were looked like they were hunting but in the wrong places  . So once I was past the picnic areas, there were no cars until I got close to OBB's, I was shocked to see less than 20 cars.

The medallion was found at Mounds Park in St. Paul around 11:15 pm on Saturday, August 20.

Tim Petrie of Cottage Grove found the flag with the help of friends and family, including Larry Petrie and Stephanie, Joey, Tommy and Dan Firestone. They discovered the flag shortly after the final clue was released under a tree in Mounds Park.

The Pioneer Press and the Minnesota Wild will introduce the winners and award prizes at a news conference at 10:30 am today – Sunday, August 21, 2005 – at the St. Paul Pioneer Press

Clue #7

Mounds Park is the place at the end of our race

Now go south across Burns from the Quick Stop

A trail through the woods will lead to the goods

Just bear left as you climb toward the bluff top

Near a point on high with views of river and sky

Turn north down a path between banks

In the grass by a lone pine is where to find

The prize for which you'll give thanks

Explanation: Gives specific directions to the object, which was located beneath loose leaves and bark by a solitary pine tree along a trail running back from the bluff almost due south of the intersection of Burns Avenue and Clarence Street.

Day 6

If you're able and willin' think of a Dylan

And revisit what he could deliver

Then it might be best if you went west

From the road to the end of the river

A wonderful life won't erupt in strife

If you let an angel be your guide

Too much heat might really be neat

Now go ahead and take the obvious stride

Explanation: The first stanza contains references to one of Bob Dylan’s most famous albums, “Highway 61 Revisited.” The highway, which runs all the way to the end of the Mississippi River, is just east of the hiding place. The clues in the second stanza all refer to streets near the hiding place. These include Etna St. (“erupt”, as in Mt. Etna), Clarence St. (Clarence was the name of the “angel” in the classic movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life”), and Burns Avenue (‘too much heat”). Finally, “take the obvious stride” is another reference to Obb’s Bar.

Day 5

A president or two will give you a clue

So will a governor of capitol renown

A school of hockey fame will also help your game

As you go jumping all around town

It's been said that candy is really quite dandy

And we're certainly inclined to concur

But then again liquor is alleged to be quicker

That both are true we're quite sure

Explanation: “A president or two” (Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson), “a governor of capitol renown” (John Johnson, memorialized in a statue on the State Capitol Mall) and a “school of hockey fame” (Johnson High School in St. Paul) all refer to Johnson Parkway, which ends near the hiding place. “Jumping” is a another clue pointing to Mounds Park, where a ski jump was located in the 1920s and 1930s. “Candy” is a Mounds Bar, while “liquor” is a reference to Obb’s Sports Bar and Grill, located less than a block from the hiding place.

Day 4

To be our winner consider a place for beginners

Then start moving up and around

As you hit your stride search for a heavenly guide

That's actually in the ground

Next do something big and look for a famed pig

From a spot with a long view of history

But you won't be hotter too close to the water

You'll have to branch out to solve our mystery

Explanation: The state fish hatchery below Mounds Park is a “place for beginners.” A star is a “heavenly guide” and in this case refers to a monument known as “Star Hill,” located just east of the hiding place. The monument consists of trees and paths (now partially obscured) that originally formed the shape of a star. It was built by the Order of the Eastern Star, a Masonic women’s group. “Look for a famed pig” refers to Pig’s Eye Lake (named after early settler Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant). The lake is visible in a “long view” from the blufftop near the hiding place. “You won’t be hotter too close to the water” tells hunters that the prize isn’t near a lake, river or stream but suggests it isn’t far from Burns Avenue. “Branch out” indicates that the object is hidden in a wooded area.

Day 3

A place of improvement with varieties of movement

Is near where the thing is secreted

Look also for bikers and maybe some hikers

But don't dig or you'll be defeated

A save of sorts but not in sports

Might give you cause for reflection

Find a trail in and you won't be failin'

To take a step in the right direction

Explanation: “A place of improvement with varieties of movement” refers to the St. Paul riverfront, where many public improvements have occurred and where all types of transportation (by rail, car, boat and airplane) can be seen. “Look for bikers and hikers” refers to a paved trail near the hiding place. “A save of sorts but not in sports” refers to the fact that the hiding place is in a large wooded area once known as the Municipal Forest Preserve (“preserve” is a synonym for “save”). “Find a trail in” tells hunters that they will have to use a trail to reach the hiding place. “Failin’” is a pun on Phalen and is designed to misdirect hunters to Phalen Park.
Sat, 08/20/2005 - 10:42 PM Permalink
King Boreas aka Ian

Day 2

It’s not in the bag ‘til you capture the flag

But no flutter or wave will be seen

Look for some plastic thatÂ’s most fantastic

And comes wrapped in red and green

We may be hacks but weÂ’ve covered our tracks

Like a Zamboni circling the rink

ThereÂ’s a deke or two amid our clues

So donÂ’t act before you think

Explanation: Indicates that while the contest is called “Capture the Flag,” the hidden object is not a flag (“no flutter or wave will be seen”). Instead, hunters are directed to look for a “plastic” object wrapped in “red” cloth and “green” tape. “A deke or two amid our clues” warns hunters that some of the clues may be misleading.

Day 1

As soon as we learned of hockeyÂ’s return

We knew it was a grand occasion

And so weÂ’ve devised a special prize

To reward you for your patience

For your summer pleasure weÂ’ve hidden a treasure

At a park somewhere in St. Paul

ItÂ’s high time you look beneath every nook

In hopes that youÂ’ll win it all

Explanation: States that the “prize” is hidden in a park in St. Paul. “High time” indicates that the hiding place is an elevated area (in this case, Mounds Park).
