"The community of St. Anthony on the east side of the Mississippi River near St. Anthony Falls was surveyed and platted as a townsite in 1849, the same year the territory of Minnesota was established. In 1852, President Millard Fillmore approved an act of Congress reducing the Fort Snelling reservation, thereby opening the land west of the river to settlers, although most of the settlers did not receive clear title until 1855."
AND
"The first commissioners selected the land to the west of St. Anthony Falls as the county seat although the settlement there was without municipal existence, or even a name. The first name selected by the county commissioners in October 1852, was Albion. However, it proved unpopular. Other names for the young community considered but discarded included All Saints, Lowell, Brooklyn, Addiseville, and Winona. The name Minnehapolis was selected by popular acclaim following schoolmaster Charles Hoag's proposal to the editor of the St. Anthony Express, George D. Bowman. The name came from a derivative of laughing waters, "Minnehaha," and the Greek suffix for city, "polis," or city of the falls. Bowman published the name in the paper in November 5, 1852 and in the November 12th issue it was given favorable review. The 'h' was dropped early on; the literal meaning is "city of waters". "
So the area east of river near the falls was considered to be Saint Anthony and the area west of the river was know as Minneapolis. As the city limits of Minneapolis expanded in all directions it pushed the village of Saint Anthony further away from the river.
Kind of seems obvious that mouse 5 is near a lake in Eden Praire.
I noticed that both Loops are capitalized...why? Mouse 2 clue 1 "Big City" is capitalized. Any theories? :eyeroll:
I had this in mind when clue two came out. Three just makes it more so.
"what smells like the river??"
I also wonder if the folks at Mnbin might not want to include Maple Grove due to the growth here.
"public" then the preserve, Just MHO.
Guess clue 4 will tell us more.
2) Minneapolis
3) ??? Little Canada?
4) Maple Grove (or Maplewood)
5) Eden Prairie
It makes sense that they would plan a geographic spread...
Unlike other scavenger hunts, MINBIN will have multiple winners and will be providing clues in multiple formats which can include text descriptions, digital images, and possibly even GPS tips.
We've checked a few places around here for the mouse. But really want to know what the next clue will bring.
but I think #2 refers to Mpls...unless they are refering to St Anthony
I wss thinking they might mean Minnehaha with the falls... but now what....
In 1873, early park supporters donated $100,000 to purchase land for a park, and the City acquired 300 acres around Lake Como. In 1890 Frederick Nussbaumer became the Superintendent of Parks, casting his vision, know-how and hard work into what largely is Como Park today. Born in 1850 in Baden, Germany, Nussbaumer spent his youth working in Europe's great gardens. He worked at London's Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, and at one of the largest tree nurseries in France. It is believed that Nussbaumer met Horace Cleveland, the Chicago landscape architect who, in the coming decades, was to play a major role in American city planning and the Twin Cities parks and boulevard systems. Apparently, Cleveland was impressed by the horticultural knowledge and experience that Nussbaumer possessed, and invited him to St. Paul to work at Como Park.
I knew I recalled the name...
do you know if there is any fishing guided trips in this area where you catch the fish and do shore lunches at parks...?!
my daddy o used to odo that up nord!
St. Anthony is our most famous falls...
Minnehaha...duh?? what are you kidding me??
maybe...ok...how if not there?? the ROAD?
meaning they only want you think "minnehaha" not the falls itself.
